Yeah I can't find them online either, I shall have to stop by a local store to see if they have them.

Best Buy vs. Etronics: Is six of one and a half dozen of the other. Best Buy has free shipping, but they also charge tax-- so $8 a pop plus tax = about the same as $34 for a 5 pack and $7-$8 shipping. They both work out to be around $8.40 or so a disc, dang. Must check radio shack.

It is nice to see that more stores actually have them in stock still, though. I do wonder how long before we see them at Walmart...

I ordered 2 from SonyStyle, they were $7 a piece and shipping was only 7.50 for NEXT DAY AIR; the catch is if I bumped up the quantity, the shipping price soared. This makes sense cuz I guess you can just throw a couple in a padded envelope.

So I ordered two from there to get for a concert tonight, and a 5 pack from etronics (ground shipping was like $7)

Still can't find in any local stores. But after I placed my order at SonyStyle and followed up with a phone call, the guy suggested trying Target, Walmart, Best Buy or Circuit City. But I doubt any of them are stocked...

No blanks at radio shack

Worse, in fine print on Best Buy's site it indicates that these are on backorder. Worst, their free sihpping no longer seems to be in force... most of the time shipping is free there.

*sigh* the wait for 1GB media continues (though I guess I can't complain too much since I just got my NH1 a day or so ago).

Well, perhaps you can complain a bit.

I mean, after all, many of the advanced recording/storage capabilities touted by Sony are based on using a Hi-MD blank. So to not easily be able to acquire the media greatly reduces the functionality one expects to have with their purchase.

I have an NH1 and have been using both 1gb blanks and 80 min blanks, both in Hi-MD mode. All of the Hi-MD functionality is available with the older discs when they are recorded in Hi-MD mode. The only loss is the 300mb limit of older discs.

Rumz,

My suggestion is to order from SonyStyle. Shipping on 2 discs was 7.50 NEXT DAY to Chicago. It was like $30 for a five pack. I ordered them late sunday night (mon morning) and got them yesterday (tuesday).

Also, I just got an email from Etronics that they shipped my 5 pack. It's due to arrive Friday.

Larry B-

Expectations on functionality were reduced for me when reading page 113 of the NH1 manual : )

Point taken, ReefBeef:-)

And while you can reformat your standard MiniDiscs as was previously mentioned, it is the ultimate shortage of space, and resulting limitations, on Hi-MD formatted standard MDs that is all the more reason to be disappointed with the lack of true Hi-MD media availability.

The only limit on functionality using a reformatted 80 min blank is the lower storage space. You can upload/download and so on just like a 1gb blank. The space problem is an issue when recording in PCM mode. But 300mb is a lot of space when recording in Hi-SP or Hi-LP. Hi-SP is supposed to be improved over SP mode.

Regardless of whether the storage space on standard MDs is sufficient, and regardless of whether you can do what you need to do or not with the smaller capacity, the fact that 1GB discs are being touted and they are still so hard to find if at all, is definitely something to be upset about and disappointed with as I am, and as I would understand others would be as well.

The fact of the matter is that a heavy focus of the sales pitch is on the hours of storage, and to do that and not have the media to match the claims easily obtainable is just wrong.

Might I point out -

Hi-MD is effectively only 1 month old [in fact in many places it's still less than a month old] as a format.

Yes, it's a bugger not being able to get the discs, but since the equipment has been out there for only this long - WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?

They will come. We'll just have to wait.
