There seems to be some sand in it, when I turn it on without a disc inserted it works okay but when i put a disc in and then turn it on it makes these weird cracking sounds and it wont play anything. it just keeps on reading. any people here every had the same thing and got it fixed? Would appreciate any help  thank you

I would think it might be worth using compressed air to blow the sand out whilst holding your N520 upside down. Hopefully the compressed air and gravity will do the trick.

Probably the only true way of vanquishing the sand properly is to open your N520 up, and using compressed air to blow the sand out. However this is not something I would recommend, and I feel very irresponsible for suggesting in the first place.

but wouldnt the sand damage the lense?

It may have already damaged the optical pick-up block, and possibly other things in the device since it's not working at all.

I would suggest either service (costly) or getting a new unit (also costly, but hey, you can get a better one).

first of all if you knew sand was in the unit you should have made sure all that sand was out before operating.. but that's past..

uhh... as for the optical pick up. sand can get in under the lens or in the channel where the beam travels.. that could mess with play back but if you can .. open the unit and try taking out the sand how ever you could.. you can't just shake it up because there's some uhh.. like temporary glue stuff in the units.. to keep certain things in place and the cracking sounds you were hearing is probably from sand being caught up in the grease that's in the whole gear and axel system that have to do with moving the optical pick up back and forth. good thing the 3 tiny motors in there are sealed.. or else..tsk tsk..
