Bin_Hex_Oct_Dec
Basically this is the problem: I click the Sonic Stage icon and message pops up saying "Updating Sonic Stage Database, Restart Sonic Stage When Finished". I click ok and another message pops up for half a second saying "converting Sonic Stage database". I click the SS icon again and the same thing happens again, over and over. I've talked to Sony tech support but they have no answer for me yet. I have a custom built PC (i know their policy) and im running Windows XP SP1. There were no previous MD software on this computer. The SS version that came with the CD is 2.0. I downloaded the update but still no luck and I tried 2.1 but got the same results. Forgot to mention that simple burner works fine. Somebody mentioned something about updating Jetcomp but I don't know what that is. Any help? I have a MZNF520D.
Bin_Hex_Oct_Dec
Ok I think I made a mistake. Net MD Simple Burner 2.0 is not working too. Im getting the message "recording failed, there was a problem reading the audio CD". Do I have a bad CD or what? At first I thought it was because I had mutiple music formats on the CD but then I tried all MP3's the same message pops up. Well I guess SS is messing up Simple Burner someway. Christopher
Upgrade to Windows XP SP2 so I can make sure it's not a Windows component error.

RichM
SonicStage and Simple Burner share quite a lot files including the OpenMG Secure Module (which contains the DRM / encryption stuff). What I recommend is: Back up your SonicStage 'library' using the SonicStage backup tool, put it somewhere safe. I'm assuming here that there's nothing wrong with the SonicStage DB that you're backing up. [*]Uninstall SonicStage, Simple Burner and their shared components, instructions here [*]Reinstall SonicStage and components, but from a single source (i.e. no mixing and matching components, use 2.1 from the outset from Connect.com perhaps). [*]Before you restore your library, run SonicStage, import some stuff, see if you can get it to act up again. [*]Restore your library using the same backup tool. Run SonicStage see if it's happens again. I am assuming there's something wrong with your SonicStage installation rather than your Windows installation, since you installed SP2 and that should restore any missing files theoretically and that appears to have made no difference. Bin_Hex_Oct_Dec
I can't get the program to open in the first place. I keep getting the message mentioned above. I also have nothing to backup but I will uninstall everything and try 2.1.
Christopher
Uninstall everything via the aforementioned link and install fresh from connect.com.
Bin_Hex_Oct_Dec
I followed the FAQ to uninstall SS properly and I installed 2.1 from connect.com. The same message pops up. It seems I need to update the database somehow. Ok I found something that might help. When I click the SS File Conversion Tool in 2.1 i get a message "cannot optimize the database because the database file version is not recent enough". Fernando Olmos
Bin, Get a copy of OpenMG, install it and then install SS over that! It worked for me.
Bin_Hex_Oct_Dec
Were you getting the same error as me? OpenMG software doesn't have the drivers for my MD only Sonic Stage does so I doubt that will work unless it somehow fixes the database problem. Christopher
Sonicstage 2 comes with OpenMG, so I'm not sure what your referring to Fernando.
Fernando Olmos
Kurisu, The OpenMg that comes with SS, I found is NOT the same as the OpenMG that came with my Sharp NetMD. Now I am only speaking from Sharp NetMD's experience, as I do not own a Sony NetMD, so I dare say the OpenMG that comes with SS2 is ONLY Sony specific - and why should it not be? Christopher
Good call, and most likely true. However, the most proper way to use a Sharp NetMD unit with softwares such as Sonicstage is as follows: Install drivers that came with Sharp NetMD unit only, and then install Sonicstage 2 after.
Fernando Olmos
Precisely! Which is why I said in my other post that you should install the ENTIRE OpenMG software that came with Sharp units (not that you need everything in it) and THEN install SS2 over that. I admit, I have not tried to install the drivers alone and SS2 after that. It may work.
Bin_Hex_Oct_Dec
Fernando, were you getting the same message as me? I am getting a new copy in the mail soon so if that doesn't work I will try your method.
Fernando Olmos
Yes I did get that database error when I tried to install SS2 on it's own, without ever having put OpenMG (Sharp copy) in first! After playing with the registry and doing the NetMD FAQ technique 3 times, I gave up! I always got the same error So what I did, as I explained before, is to allow the Sharp OpenMG disc to be installed in its entirety, and then place SS2 over that! After that, it all worked and I never got any more problems since. I love SS2, it's great! It's simple, quick and no more checkin/checkout bullshit. The only qualm I have is that once you convert the MP3 to Atrac (say in LP2 mode), you're stuck with that conversion until you remove the track(s) from the library entirely and reimport them in from the original MP3 files. It would have been nice if you can re-convert the MP3 tracks without having to reimport them in. I wonder if that SS2 variant, that a member here wrote, is any better? Hmmmm
alex945
Well I get the same message as the poster of this topic and I also have a sony MD. With the MD I got a cd with sonicstage 1.5 but that one stalled so i tried to update it to 2.2 but then I got that message. I also tried many times to reinstall it with help of the faq on this forum. But it still doesn't work. I also checked if I had that windows update KB840987 but I haven't after that I installed it to sp2. So does anyone has a idea what to do. Thanks Alex
Fernando Olmos
Like I said mate.... install the original OPENMG programs from the CD you got with your unit... then install SS2 over that! It should work.
atrain
^ that's just the same as openMG 2.2 / sonic stage 1.5 when you reinstall the new version all those files get removed. the only thing that stays is the database. seems to me like the databse is corrupted. do the full uninstall. keep the md unplugged. reboot. install SS2.2 from connect, create new databse when asked. reboot. plug in md & start SS. if it works then install SB. easy, right? alex945
Like I said mate.... install the original OPENMG programs from the CD you got with your unit... then install SS2 over that! It should work. But it doesn't. The only problem I can come up with is that I bought the MD in the US and that I live in Europe. ' Do you maybe have another solution. thanks Alex

Qwakrz
Not long ago someone found out that you need to have installed the MDAC software from Microsoft to get Sonic Stage to work properly. This software should be pre-installed in all versions of windows but occasionaly gets corrupted. I cant find the original link but the best I can find using the search engine is http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&DisplayLang=en This link is to MSDA files but does not include the Jet database update (which I think is the one you need), but its worth a try
Bin_Hex_Oct_Dec
Sorry I haven't replied in a while. Sony lost my new SS2 CD when i sent my old CD to them so it took them a month to send me another new one. Not to my surprise I still get the same message. I have that MDAC update someone mentioned and I still get the error. Fernando, your saying to install the original OpenMG programs on the CD first, then install SS2 over that? The CD that came with my unit is an SS 2.0 CD, so what OpenMG programs are you talking about? When I put my SS2 CD into my drive, the only installation option I get is to install SS 2.0 and NetMD Simpler Burner 2.0.
superflyalive
I see the last response is Oct 2004 but I have the same problem. I am have tried SS2.1 and 2.3 and still get this problem with SS starting. I am using XP Home with SP2. The XP Service Pack 1 fix for OpenMG does not work and won't even install. I've followed directions on this forum for reinstallation (actually have problably reinstalled 6 times now). Sony support (US and Canada) have not been able to fix the problem. The SS 2.1 program from the same disc installs fine on my other XP Pro SP1 computer. I am running an original system. I don't even have a database as I can't start SS. Sony has now refered me for level 2 support. Can't wait... what is the definition of insanity?
eastsider
I had a similar problem twice. Simple Burner wouldn't work. When I turned on Sonic Stage 2.3 , a Sonic Stage Restore Tool came on. The message indicated that this was a common problem after performing a System Restore operation. I had performed such an operation a day or so before the problem occured with Sonic Stage. The Sonic Stage Restore Tool connected to the Internet, and then everything worked properly.I don't know how to turn on the Sonic Stage Restore Tool independently -- it just came on when I turned on Sonic Stage.Good luck. Christopher
Thanks for the tip eastsider, and welcome to the forums. For future reference, the name of the tool is ojbsir.exe, and is located in C:\Program Files\Sony\SonicStage.
ElCaito69
Nope←Fernando here (under a different alias this time).Sorry about not been clear to Kurisu and others, but yes, Kurisu is correct. For non-Sony NetMD users, you must install only the NetMD driver for the unit and not the entire OpenMG software. For Sharp NetMD the driver is called NETMDSHA.DLLSony users DO NOT have to go through this process. Their copy of SS3 should be enough to get things working, but I found out that you MUST have the latest version of MDAC (2.7 or 2.8?) to run it under WinXP. You do not really need WINXP SP2 or even SP1 to get it to work, although SP2 does come with the latest version of MDAC. The reason behind MDAC is that SS3 (or even OpenMG) use an encrypted MS Access database (MDB) which requires the Jet4 ODBC drivers. The Jet database drivers only come with MDAC.I hope this helps. gigolo
I have posted the following on another thread, I think this one is more appropriate try to re-register mdac and jet with the MDAC repair tool found here :http://www.macropool.com/en/download/mdac.htmlFor reinstalling MDAC 2.81 on SP2 , see also :http://www.macropool.com/en/download/mdac_xp_sp2.html
