koninc
Hey all, I just got myself an NH1 from Japan, then went on to further travels. I sent home the charging cradle, because I was under the impression that I could charge the thing via the USB cable which you use to transfer music. So, after about a week, I have a dead HiMD, and a sinking feeling that for the rest of this trip, i am without audio. Not good. Is it just me that thinks it is the height of foolishness to POWER the HiMD over USB but not CHARGE it!? (I can plug it in and transfer songs, but as soon as I remove the cable, it goes back to its dead battery) This seems to be the dumbest thing ever done. Anyone have any comments on this? In the short term, I need to find some way to charge it up. Are there battery chargers which work with these Li Ion batteries? Thanks koninc
bongomaniac
As a future owner of a MZNH900 or now more likely a NH1 I also would like to know If there is a way of charging the gumstrip bats. I bet Sony make just such a gizmo at $89 a throw.
Christopher
Sadly, there is no standalone chargers currently [that I know of] for the NH1 battery. You'll have to lug the unit and ac adapater around for such purposes, sadly. There is one for the NH900, however. That uses a standard gumstick. koninc
Hmm, are you sure it works on the NH1? The top three hits on google for BC-7HT: http://www.planetminidisc.com/bc-7ht.html http://www.minidisco.com/bc-7ht.html and http://www.audiocubes.com/product_info.php...?products_id=84 Do not mention either NH1 compatibility nor the Li Ion battery that came with my NH1. IS there a new model or something else? Surely it should be possible to charge over usb!!? grr!
jadeclaw
It wasn't meant for the NH1. It was pointed at bongomaniac, who hasn't decided yet, when he takes the NH900. For that, there is another one: http://www.zbattery.com/zbattery/gppb12us140-c2.html The Battery: http://www.zbattery.com/zbattery/gp14m-oc2.html The NH1 battery is different and has to be charged internally. Btw, none of the Hi-MD units can be charged via USB.
koninc
jadeclaw. Thanks for clearing that up before I blew 30 bucks. Well, thats annoying. Im not too worried because I bought the NH1 predominantly for mobile sampling, but I had hoped to use it when I was on the road as well... might have to buy an IPod or something which charges over usb. I spend an average of 2 months in every 5 travelling internationally... if I have to bring the cradle it is only going to get broken, lost, etc. Jadeclaw: What I'm getting at is exactly what you say: it has to be charged INTERNALLY, via a 12v connection to the MD. In the case of charging, you have to use a 12v plug. Well, USB is 12v all the way... Its proven because the MD player is powered by it when connected. So why on EARTH does it not charge? Seems a really foolish cut-corner. Anyway. Enough rant.
bhangraman
It's one of the things that the Sony product managers (at least, those who have got their act together... which actually in my experience totals 0) must be going "d'oh!" especially as now every current iPod charges over USB and firewire. Whereabouts are you now koninc?
jadeclaw
@koninc: USB is 5Volts. But that doesn't really matter, as modern voltage converters can make anything out of that as long as the whole kaboodle doesn't draw more than 500 mAmps... But as I said earlier, Sony is just another word for 'not thinking' Regarding 'not thinking': Sony just bought the MGM studios for 5 billion US$. No, not because of the studios, main goal were the old movies, that noone wants to see anymore...
bongomaniac
Just got the MZNH900 from Be-Direct and am considering returning it. It is bigger than my MZR70(which has TWO headphone outs!) to start with and when the AA adaptor is attatched there wont be much room left in my trusty waxed cotton bum bag (read fanny pack) also to contain a battery box, mics and remote etc. Though bigger it also felt lighter and flimsy.Jog wheel with central button is very ergonomic though. Now I have to decide between NH1 and waiting till Sharp gets thier offering off the drawing board. Anyone know if NH1 Lion bats can be bought off the web in the UK and the cost? AAs RULE! xispe
not charging over the USB is way to stupid... if the unit it self can work using the USB for transfering audio, why not also charge ? It's wayyy to stupid to be true! It's like my girlfriends sony camera... it has batteries, and for downloading the pictures to the computer using the USB cable, it needs the bateries to supply power.. AND WORST, the camera doesn't came with any AC Adaptor! One day the bateries were out, and she had to take the batteries out, charge them, and after 12 hours she finally downloaded the pictures to the computer What the heck!? check this thread: http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=5121 I am using it with my new NH700. bongomaniac
Thanks for the info. but I meant to say- any UK stores that I can buy the NH1 lion bat from. Audiocubes is a US store -the $49 price seems hyped to me and I would have to pay V.A.T.,Customs duty ,VAT on the customs duty and postage. I hope these come down in price .The bat for MZNH900 is only $8.95. By the way I did send back the MZNH900 -and let me bash It futher. The screen contains many lines of text, so the size of the writing is very small, which may be ok if the background was not as dark as it is. The contrast adjustment only changes the the intensity of the text. I thought this would be next to usless for recording in a dark club. Anyone thinking of this model for recording should go for the World Tourist model with three line illuminated remote on which the recording level can also be monitered. This costs as much as the MH1 though I think. Christopher
That's incorrect, bongo. Audiocubes is not a US store - it's based in Japan. The price of the battery is not hyped, as it's a proprietary battery that is only usable by the NH1 + NH3D, so finding it for less will be extremely difficult. You will also not have to pay extra VAT/customs/etc because the package is marked as a gift.
bongomaniac
OK,sorry It was the $ that made me that made me jump to that conclusion. Tha 'gift' thing is a good idea. Now why didn't I think of that when I bought my synth module from Canada.
deafplayer
I dont know how Sony manages to do this... ive been looking into HI-MD since it was announced and was initially very excited but it seems every time i come to this site, especially since they hit stores, i find a new reason not to buy it
