Because its Old-school cool! Allot of my friend used to give me so much sh$t fort having this huge MD-recorder, and i refused to buy a new one because i loved how chucky it was! Leon ps:i wouldnt get a chukny walkman these days though.

This might sound disgusting, but have u guys tried using car wax? I just remmermbered i tried it on my old watch(which had a glass screen) and it worked well for minor scratches. I dont know if it will work the same way for plastic-based screens like those on walkmans! Leon

you make a good point, there is no option to keep the backlight on all the time, for example when its in the car plugged into the car charger. its the little things that Sony never do!! Leon
-
But do they leave your player Minty fresh?? lol! Leon

if you do brake it, and take it to repair under warantee, replace the battery to the original. Once the sony guys look at it and find out you have been using the wrong battery they will kick you out the door!! great discovery though!! Leon

did you get that remote when u bought the unit? or did you have it before hand?? i didnt get a remote with mine! I was going to get the black one too but they ran out of stock, stuck with silver!! Great pics dude!! Leon -
im pretty sure there is an option in the main menu, not the service menu, to diasble the backlight altogether! as for the small time it takes to refresh its databse when you disconect it, i asume thats what you mean when you say "hybernates for 30sec", thats nessesary for the device so it doesnt thrash the harddisk around looking for files. and i agree abou thet servcie menu, its dangerous under the wrong circumstances! Have u checked weather the files ure trying to play are VBR(Varibale Bit Rate MP3) or a stable 128, 160, 192 etc... SOmetime smy winamp does that when i play VBR files that are badly encoded. If it plays normal music files like atracs encoded from CD's then YES! take it back ASAP!! Leon

i love it so much i just got one!! $13au with shipping!!! Leon

Heres something i put together at work, i was originaly going to buy one of those Aloy hard cases ot the leather case from sony for my walkman, but this was cheaper, and kept me entertained for an hour. Step 1 Go out to your nearest $2 shop and buy a crapy keyring, make sure it comes in a nice hard cardboard box, about the same size as the walkman Step 2 Put your walkman inside, and measure out the screen and buttons, as well as the headphone jack Step 3 Cut out a space for the headphone jack, the screen and thebuttons and sticky tape the inside of the walls, so they dont peel Step 4 Find some hard foam, the kindused for packaging, and cut out segments for the box that will make the walkman fit in, nice and snugly.. (sorry about the crap quality, i left my camera at home and my p900's camera is, well, shite) Leon

That is the collset thing i have ever seen!!!!! why dont sony put these thigns into walkmans like a visualization!!! im so gon track one down!! Leon

Sony HMP-A1 Pictorial and Review

how much do these go for??? Leon -
when i was at the sony shop, a couple of guys before me bought a few of these. They looks cool, but they are expensive, i think the 1gig players were somethign like $389AU, and the 20gig NW-HD5 is $459. And about the memory thats normal, pretty much any drive manufacturer will tell you 512 when all you will realy get its just under. My 20gig one is like 19.80 gig or something close to that! a few questions: Is the Seek time on these things fast??? Is the cold start time fast? Can you recharge the unit via usb? Leon

Just wondering if anyone knows how to or if its possible to change the start-up and shut-down animation on the Sony NW-HD5. I had a look through the folders and all the service menus but couldnt find anythign interesting.... Leon

I had the same problem, im a regular sony user from MD, NETMD to my recently purchased NW-HD5, which i agree is awsome! I have all my music organized in folders with proper ID3 tags, it took me hours upon hours to do this, and sonic stage just goes and screws it all up, im abotu 1/4 way through my music colection trying to organize it to work with sonic stage. The one thing i do liek about sonic stage, at least the version i have with the NW-HD5 is tat you can organize things in play lists. Me beeing a person who likes to listen to "discs"(MD) i find it just like puting in a new MD, but insted bworsing to your playlist. Appart from that. its bloody slow! i tried it on my 500mhz machine, and got to the front screen in about 3 minutes!!! works fine on my 3.2gig machine though! Leon

Preface Recently i was burgled, the @#$%heads stole my guitars and my 2 most favourite MD recorders, so i was left with hundreds of MD's and all my music on my computer! So i go into my local Sony shop and pick up the Sony NW-HD5: (more pics below) It looks pretty damn good, its a bit heavy for its tiny size but its thin and very cnfortable to hold and operate. I know there are heaps of you out there who are goign to ask the saem old question "Why shoudl i buy one of these vs say an iPod?". Firtsly let me say that i detest, and im using that workd mildly, iPods and the people who say things like, qoate, "Because everyone has one! duuhh!?".(no offence to anyonw who actualy owns an ipod, if you saw any of my posts on the minidisc forums you would hate me) The Good -Looks AWSOME, a true work of art by Sony -Small very comfortable and very solid, much like all of sonys high end walkmans -Easy to use, whilst the menu system is a bit strange at first, i got used to it very quickly. There are 2-Volume buttons, Back+Foward, Up and Down for navigation, Pause/Play, Stop/power, Menu/Search and the Hold slide. -Is compatible with Sony Remote controlls, that is walkman remotes, my friend lent me their MD remotes to test out on this and they both worked perfectly, even the backlite went on BUT it does not come with a remote, nor is it mentioned anywhere(read The Bad below) -The start up time is not bad, 4.88 seconds from a cold start, what i mean is that when the player is completely turned off, as soon as you press PLAY it takes 4.88 seconsd for the music to come on. -Seek time is under 1 second, and about 1.5 when using the Shuffle option -The hold slide is BIG and very easy to slide across bt not back(bonus for beeing a hold slide) -Has an self orientating screen, depending on which way you turn the walkman, and then turn it on(read The Bad below) the screen will re-orientate itself to the right position -Plays for 40 hours, although thats not quite true(read The Bad below) -Has an interchangable LiON(Lithium-Ion) rechargable battery, which is cheap compared to their MD conterparts. This Battery goes for soethign like $75AUD -The sound quality is great, i have tried both mp3's and Atrac files and even 128k mp3's sound good. -Comes with powersupply, usb cable, software(read The Bad below), GOOD long headphones and a cary pouch(read The Bad below) and now... The Bad -Bit overpriced, for $459AUD its not the cheapest 20gig player around -Sonicstage, Sonicstage, Sonicstage...wow what a piece of c##p, the DRM placed by sony once again makes it shoot itself in the leg. I heva alot of music, just onder the 20 gig capacity of the player, it took me about 10 crashes of the software before everythign worked ok. -The 40 hour batery life is only good if you are playing Atrca encoded music, for me this meant reencoding over 15 gig of music!(NO WAY) so playing MP3's alone i think i get abour 20 hours maybe a bit more -The Player has really good sound efefcts built in, from the Acoustic engine, to a 6-band graphics equalizer..BUT gues again, u cant use them unless u encode your files to Atrac, u can use the bass treble equalizer for mp3's though, its not bad but i feel like ive paid for a feature i will never use. -The Cary case, well its moer like a little piece of rag to wipe your glasses with, it wont protect the walkman from anything but a babys breath, besides that its awkward to insert the player into, and just uselss for finding the buttons when its in the pouch -Whilst its compatible with a Sony Walkman remote(MD/CD/HD), it doesnt come with one, doesnt say anythign about it beeing compatible, doesnt mention it anywher ein the manual, adds, store people didnt know about it untill i showed him you could do it... etc.... -Whilst the screen can re-orientatte itself, it only does this after a power on(not really a bad but somethign which shoudl be improved upon) -Whilst using Shuffle, there is no way to go back to the previous track, now i understand this is a very anali-retentive thing for me to discuss but its so bloody easy!! im not saying have a record of every random track played but just the previous track!! Over all Overall i have to say this unit is great, 20 gig, looks great, sounds good, really easy to use, REMOVABLE LioN battery(take that iPods), and remote controll support. I fyou can pick it up for $400, like i did, go for it! Here are some more pics: Hope this helps anyone out there who is plannign on buying one! Leon
