  1. Dude, get an MZ-N10. It can do everything that the other players can and more. Sure, the MZ-N1 probably is "good enough," but you get soooo much more if you go the extra few bucks and get an N10. The MZ-R910 is a sweet unit, but it lacks NetMD. While NetMD is somewhat over-rated, it really is a huge improvement over realtime recording. Trust me on that one; I'm used to having NetMD, then my friend totally screwed up my MZ-N707 and I had to start recording in realtime again and it's a pain. If you buy something from Japan and you live in the US, you'll have to buy a different adaptor for charging the internal battery and you'l need to download english software and stuff. It shouldn't be that hard, and an adaptor isn't expensive. I don't know anything about that sharp unit, so I can't help you out there. As far as Sharp vs Sony, I've heard that Sharp is better for live recording. I have three sony recorders and I've never had a problem with live recording; I really don't think it makes that much of a difference. I recommend going the MZ-N10 route.
  2. Buy an MZ-N707, period. It has NetMD, meaning you can "download" tracks from your computer to your player. It has a mic-in for field recordings and it has mic levels. You can find one for between $200US and $250US. As a side note...WHY THE HELL DO PEOPLE SAY THE MZ-N707 IS BULKY???? If you think it is bulky, you must have never even heard of a MZ-R50 or for that matter a cd player. OK, it's bulky in comparison to $350 recorders, but I don't think $100 is worth getting rid of the extra 5 mL of volume on the cheaper player.
  3. Ebay. Other than that, you'll likely have a rough time tracking down an MZ-R50; most owners treasure those players as if they were gold (and should!)
  4. Honestly, i don't understand why people buy players and not recorders. Ok, so players are smaller and lighter and have better battery life, but is that worth not being able to record? To some it is.

    avls

The reason your older sony sounds different than your newer one is the change in codecs. Your MZ-N707 uses ATRAC Type R, which I think sounds better. Your older model uses ATRAC 3.5. Now differences in recording quality are somewhat subjective, although I doubt many people would say that atrac 3.5 sounds better than type r. AVLS does nothing more than limit how loud you can crank the volume and has nothing to do with sound quality.
  6. Hey where do you guys get these kits to recover TOC's and such? how much does one cost?
  7. Sony recorders use different numbers to indicate what is coming with the unit. if you buy a sony MZ-R700, that's what you get. If you buy an MZ-R700PC, you get the stuff that comes with the MZ-R700 but you also get PC-link stuff. Or at least I think that's how it works. Frankly, I've never really found those letters to make a difference, but I guess it could in certain cases.
  8. lol! oops. well, then you could always start your recording and then quickly bubble wrap your recorder, then put it in a safe, then hide that in a secret compartment in your house...naw, j/k. I'm a little slow...sorry.
  9. Hmmmm...thanks for the tip Andy. Do you know what causes this? I'm by no means afraid of taking the unit apart and tightening up some screws or something. Recording with the unit face down sounds like it'd be a pain in the ass, and mine is getting progressively worse and I'd like to fix it.
  10. Very cool! Thanks a bunch for posting that sort of info...I imagine I'm speaking for a bunch of people when I say that we appreciate the personal reviews of new stuff. I'm going to buy one as soon as I can scrap up the money! I've got a question for you...I know the unit charges the internal Li-ion battery. Is it capable of charging AA batteries? I don't really see how it can...
  11. Thanks for the highly detailed descriptions of the unit, it sounds good to me! As a side note, however...THE INTERNAL BATTERY IS ONLY 340 mAh??? Dude my Ni-MH rechargable AA's are 1200 mAh. Yanno, I bet sony could have ooooooooo so slightly enlarged the unit and gotten a lot more battery life into it. Dammit. Yanno, it would really kick ass if Sony/Sharp/whoever designs these players would send their design ideas to minidisc.org so people can make suggestions. I'd definetly be all over that, plus we'd have better players.
  12. You can't keep your MD protected while recording. If the disc is protected, it means that it won't allow a recorder to make any modifcations to the disc at all whatsoever, i.e. no recording is allowed. So, protecting the disc while recording is essentially not only paradoxical but impossible by definition.
  13. If you use OpenMG, then you can't rewrite the disc unless you delete the tracks/disc with OpenMG, checking back in the tracks and that crap. if you use NetMD simple burner, you can simply delete the tracks/disc using either the unit or the program as if they were recorded in realtime. Track protection just pisses me off, so I always use simple burner. (Doesn't making it so you can't modify tracks with your MD recorder defeat one of the original purposes of the MD system?) This is the one single reason why I hate OpenMG with a burning passion and LOVE NetMD simple burner.
  14. I have never ever ever ever ever ever ever had a unit try to charge an alkaline battery for more than like two seconds, and I have 3 (plus other portable cd players) different recorders. I believe that the unit runs current through the battery backwards of what the normal direction of the current is and it charges the battery (physics stuff.) To the best of my knowledge, normal AA alkaline batteries have a potential difference of 1.5V, whereas most rechargables have slightly less than that, 1.2V. I believe that the unit detects there differences in voltage, thus detirmining if it is a rechargable battery or not. Now I don't KNOW that is how it works, but I don't really see another way that it could. By the way, I just went and checked those battery voltages. A standard Duracell Ultra AA is rated 1.5V while my Energizer AccuRechargable Ni-MH batteries have a voltage of 1.2V.
  15. Hey, I was looking over the MZ-N10 (I WANT IT!) and thinking about the power differences between international models and the US model. Now the MZ-N10 needs a 6V adaptor, right? Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't slightly older (as in 4 years ago) sony portable cd players come with 6V adaptors? If I had one (which i think I do), could I buy a japanese MZ-N10, download the english sonicstage 1.5, use my 6V sony US adaptor, and then have, essentially, the US model? Is there some sort of internal difference in MD players concerning different power sources, or is it all in the adaptor? the pic of the adaptor on the MZ-N10 equipment page looks like the plug on it resembles normal sony cd portable plugs. I dunno, I'm just curious...plus I don't want to have to wait for the MZ-N10 to reach the US. living in the US can be such a pain in the ass sometimes...we're the last to get cool electronics, we can't get a bunch of really cool cars (i.e. Nissan Skyline), plus George W. is just a pain in the ass...

    MD-Editor 1.12E

What's 1.12E? Let me know what it is and i might be able to help you track it down.
  17. Yup, no prob. i've had good experiences recording in all different ways with my MZ-R70. It's actually the most user friendly player I have. Have fun with it! (By the way, what are you going to be recording? just curious...)
  18. Yanno, my hearing has actually gotten worse over the past few years listening to music and playing in a Jazz Band and stuff...I'm only 17 years old and my mom can hear better than I can. I was reading all your stuff worrying about ear damage and what not...point is, yes, you can damage your ears listening to stuff on full volume (I haven't even used full volume all that much), and taking care of them is definetly something worth the money for a new set of headphones. Noise cancelling headphones/earphones rock. they are somewhat expensive, but they work really really well. If you wanna go all-out with noise-cancelling headphones, I'd recommend the Bose noise-reduction headphones...but they cost A LOT (like $200-$300...) I got a pair of Aiwa noise reduction headphones for $50 at a local Best Buy, and although they aren't that comfy, they make listening to music on an airplane much much easier. I haven't ever used any earbuds that have noise cancelling functions, so I can't vouch for those.
  19. Yes, the remote from the US model of the MZ-N707 will work with the MZ-N505.
  20. By R70PC, I assume you mean the MZ-R70 Sony recorder, and that does indeed have a mic input.
  21. Ken, there are several differences in th MZ-N707 and the R700. The 707 has ATRAC Type R, meaning your recordings will sound better. you can adjust bass AND treble and not just bass in an equalizer on the 707 but not the 700. The 707 has group function, while the 700 does not. All around, I think the N707 is a far superior unit to the R700 despite their seemingly minor differences...plus having NetMD just rocks ass.
  22. But if the recording head is dirty or stuff is out of alignment, then how come it only does a terminal TOC edit once out of every like 100 times I record? I would think both of those problems would persist rather than just coming and going; they wouldn't fix themselves.

    help please!!!

umm I think that if you have it set to sync record, you can't do the pause+record thing because that essentially defeats the purpose. Doesn't synchro record just apply to digital recording, and don't digital recordings with optical lines automatically start recording when sync rec is turned on?
  24. The lens is clean, I've already done that, and all three of my players have done that at one point or another. i was just wondering it there was some sort of explanation, and I doubt a dirty laser is the reason, because otherwise it would have trouble doing more than just TOC edits. But thanks anyway.
  25. My MZ-R70 is sitting in my lap whirring away saying "TOC Edit." Strangely, it has been doing this for the past five minutes. What the hell is going on? I've had this happen before, and sometimes I just unplug the battery (and lose the recording I just did) and other times I let it go and it (sooner or later) finishes. Is it defragmenting the minidisc or something? what makes it go into these random terminal TOC edits?
