    Dilema

MZNHF800! Why? Additional inputs & charger & battery included. And it looks better...
  3. A thank you to the mod. Another thing appeared during the whole testing, when downloading some other stuff onto a disc, the recorder froze always at the same track. A closer inspection gave this (Red circle) Since this disc was unused, shrinkwrapped new, someone at the factory must have dropped something on it. The scratch goes through the reflective layer. The disc has 3 to 4 of these...
  4. SonicStage does indeed kill uploads randomly. In another thread, I reported this: I could literally see Kurisu's eyes go open wide  Ok, Let's be serious... I did more tests, by recording more vinyl stuff onto MD and listened them through to make sure, that the discs play back fully and error free. The first few discs went through without problems, when I plugged in my amplifier into phone out of my NH700, the SonicStage driver locked up when the elevator started its way down. It showed no error message, just the upload counter was stuck at 20% and Windows was unable to shutdown. After restarting the PC, the disc could be read without further incident. Even the failed track, as SonicStage was unable to write back the DRM-info. But why the elevator? It uses a special type of pulse width control circuit to add soft start and stop onto the elevators 1kWatt motor. The spikes produced by this circuit even have visible effects on the TV-picture. The Computer is behind a mains filter, the amplifier is not. By adding a clip-on ferrite onto the audio cable and a second one on the USB-cable reduced that problem Since File-copy to and from MD in the Windows-explorer never failed, I can only guess, that the error detection and correction used by the USB-mass-storage driver is deliberately circumvented, when SonicStage takes over. Hmm, Sony's DRM system incompatible with the Windows driver's safeguards??? Ok, restarted the PC and moved on to the next disc, two tracks failed despite the fact, that only the USB cable was connected to the recorder. Since both tracks were fully playable and the elevator not moving, I can safely conclude, that SonicStage is at fault here. Of course, when the same disc was used to record and transfer the failed tracks, it worked without a problem. Ok, Sony will get a nice message, the answer will be posted here. Advice for now: Disconnect every cable from the recorder except USB. Place a clip-on ferrite on each end of the USB-cable. If you do insist on an amplifier connected to the headphone output of the recorder, place a clip-on ferrite on that cable too. It should look like this: It does reduce the probability of tracks being trashed. But even then, expect to lose recordings during upload. However, if it is a recording, that cannot be redone, don't upload, record it off the USB. Even, if Sony brings out a new SonicStage without the upload bug, this recommendation stands until Sony removes the DRM-junk for self created recordings.
  5. Much better stability(2.0 crashed every 5 Minutes on my comp), better codecs, when ripping CDs for download onto MD and it is much more responsive (2.0 exhibits 3 second lockups, when scrolling through a long list and had serious problems with big albums.).
  6. Everything you need to know is in here: http://www.minidisc.org/manuals/sony/Sony_...tion_manual.pdf The NH700 takes AA-cells too. And comes with battery and charger/PSU User Review is here: http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=5633
  7. Yes and No. A Hi-MD recorder can play discs recorded on the NF810. The NF810 can play discs recorded on a Hi-MD unit in NetMD mode. The Hi-MD unit must show 'MD' + 'SP' or 'LP2' or 'LP4' in its display. And of course, use standard discs only. Standard discs recorded in Hi-MD mode or the new 1GByte discs won't play in the NF810.
  8. The tracks on the MD remain unchanged as that is a simple playback.
  9. Europe is stuck with the 2.0 Europeans have the choice: music shop + crappy software or useable software and no music shop. Personally, I decided against the shop, as I don't pay 9 to 12 euros for a 132k file. Btw, BMG/Sony decided to reduce the price for CDs, making Sony's online offer quite questionable. (IMHO & IANAL of course...)
  10. I don't see, where it says Lithium. However, the NH900 has a battery case included, which can be attached onto the bottom of the recorder. And you can use either the internal gumstick or the AA cell in the external case. Or both together, which result in a longer operating time. You should try to use rechargeables in the external case too, should work I guess. The operating manual is here: http://www.minidisc.org/manuals/sony/Sony_...tion_manual.pdf Speaking of gumsticks: Read here Btw, the NH1 has a LI-Ion-battery but no external case...
  11. Well, that looks VERY interesting. What caught my eye is property 1252, the mediumkey. That makes me think, if this key is transported along with the associated .omg or .oma file, it might be possible to 'merge' and synchronize SonicStage databases, instead of killing one database when importing another one. Thanks dex & latexxx, now I have to find tools to work on Access2000 databases, those included with my VisualStudio aren't up to the task.
  12. Simple. You know, what Winzip does? Compressing files and when the contents of a Zip-archive are decompressed, the result is identical to the original files. With Apple-Lossless, it is the same, only the algorithm used is optimized towards soundfiles. Remember, Lossless means that nothing get lost. A link with a more thorough explanation: http://mp3.radified.com/lossless.htm
  13. Not very specific, as that site has 1000+ pages. And not very specific as you don't mention the recorder either...
  14. You are missing the point somewhat. Software should NEVER(!!!) corrupt user data. NOT EVEN when the software crashes. And I expect, that the software is tested thouroghly enough to avoid these problems. If a tool from a hobby programmer has an issue, it is one thing, but from a big corporation like Sony, I expect something better. If Sony is unable to deliver a usable and reliable software, then they should publish all specifications, so that 3rd-party suppliers or the open source community can produce something better. And remember, the hardware is very good, it is the software, that sucks like a black hole here...
  15. Sorry, no Tefifone either...
  16. Actually, I don't feel like spending that much on a disc, in addition, I have a load of standard discs to fill first and these will last well into the next year before I need to buy additional discs.
  17. I would place the quota at 1 out of 100 tracks that will refuse to upload. And it happens very randomly. However, if more than one track on a disc is dead, then it is usually a number of consecutive tracks... I will do more tests on the weekend, so stay tuned.... But, as long as there is no new version of SonicStage, if you cannot repeat the recording DON'T upload, record in realtime off the USB.
  18. What battery chart? Please be more specific.
  19. Had visited our local Saturn outlet here in Gemany and the salesguy questioned Sony about the availability of Hi-MD blanks and Sony answered them, that Hi-MD blanks are currently on sale in China and the US only because of limited supply. Sony hopes to serve Europe when the christmas sales begin. And that means round mid November to December. It seems, that any further inquiries here on the forum are obsolete until then. Methinks, I have to order at Audiocubes...
  20. The point is this, when I first had problems with upload, I thought that the discs used were responsible. (Old BASF discs). But then, when 14 consecutive tracks in one group out of 21 refused to upload from the included 1GB disc, it made me thinking. The other 50 tracks on that disc uploaded without further problems. I then recorded the same 14 tracks again. In Linear PCM. On the same disc. Guess what - everything could be uploaded without any problem. I then used that very same disc to transfer another 60 tracks, I could upload these as well without a problem. Normally, if a disc is defective, the problem appears always at the same position, but it doesn't happen here. But I'm not done yet, i've had another 15 tracks waiting on a TDK RXG74 disc, so I checked, if all tracks were playable by quickly playing the first few seconds of each track. Of course, all were playable. But again, one track refused to upload, AND that one refused to play on the recorder itself. "CANNOT PLAY" was the message. Before the failed upload, it could be played. Another problem, when tracks had been uploaded error free, I get error messages when converting from Hi-SP into LP2, something like "Cannot convert, Unsupported file format" on one out of 50 tracks. Of course, the BASF-discs mentioned in the beginning, had no errors when used again... And if someone asks, the recorder was placed on a flat, vibration free surface, had a freshly charged battery inside and the power supply connected and plugged in. And I was NOT pounding the table either...
  21. Me. about mid to end of next week. And I possibly found something disturbing: SonicStage might be corrupting uploads randomly resulting in a total loss of that track. I have to test this further, but it is time consuming.
  22. Edit on the recorder, the editor in SonicStage is the same. Since the NH900 has home deck style editing, it doesn't need to be in SS
