  1. Remember, we're talking about Hi-MD-Playback via USB-Port without ever going analog. I strongly suggest to wait with the final verdict until the recorders are out. This might be the reason for some limitations, especially the inability for old NetMDs to upload anything and that checkout of Linear PCM is not possible. However, this is first generation of Hi-MD recorders, so we don't know, what to expect when other manufacturers come out with their lineup - especially makers of professional equipment.
  2. Not one of the first, it is already fourth generation. Aside from that, there is a better place than the junk yard - Ebay! 60 to 90 bucks are always in for a deck in decent condition...
  3. You do know, that the signal never leaves the computer? In fact, the sound data doesn't even sees the soundcard before picked up by cooledit. And therefore no Digital - Analog - Digital conversion takes place. Only remember to select 'wave' as recording input and set the slider to 100%.
  4. 45 CD: It's the lowest quality available on Hi-MD, according to Sony comparable to 128kBit MP3. The recording times are here: http://www.minidisc.org/hi-md_faq.html Look at entry 7. Prices: Look here: http://www.minidisc.org/himd_mdcenter_news.html under 'Etcetera'. Remember, these are list prices including import- and sales tax for the Netherlands. The street price might become lower...
  5. From this: http://www.minidisc.org/himd_mdcenter_news.html Document: High speed MD to PC uploading can be performed with recordings made from mic, line & optical sources. All Hi-MD formats that can be recorded with the units themselves can be uploaded (i.e. PCM, Hi-SP & Hi-LP). Uploaded tracks can [currently] only be played back on the PC by using the supplied SonicStage2 ("SS2") software. Extended SonicStage software will become available that will be able to burn audio-CD's. Exporting from Extended-SS2 to WAV is still unknown. (We have to wait to know. ) Exporting from Extended-SS2 to MP3 will not be possible (an external WAV->MP3 step is necessary). In addition: When playing back tracks that are on a Hi-MD formatted disc, the sound is also transferred back to the PC via the USB bus and will be heard over the speakers/headphones. While playing back MD tracks over the PC it is possible to simultaniously record them with e.g. Cooledit 2000 (effectively a realtime upload). --------- So you have two ways to get your music onto the PC. Hope this helps...
  6. I think, I have an idea... What is the maximum width allowed for these images? 150 pixels, like the Avatar-Icons or less? And state the maximum height as well.
  7. You DO know, that these tags are deprecated and that the W3C discourages their use? And the future is XHTML and CSS, that includes fixed fontsizes, etc. By separating text and styling, the webpage becomes screenreader and braille-compatible as well. And that's the area, where the Internet Explorer has the biggest deficiences. Second, the Internet Explorer is broken. By design, I have to add. Think vendor lock-in. And it's old. A big gaping security hole as well... Third, Frontpage always delivers broken HTML. You can't use that as a reference. If you run a Frontpage-generated page through a validator, you're getting atleast a screen full of errors, no matter how simple the webpage is... I don't know, what Sites you visit, but 99% work well in Opera AND Mozilla(Firefox). A few more work by switching the Browser ID, just press F12 in Opera and click the one you want. My experience is that those pages, which don't work in Opera are usually not worth visiting. But that's a personal opinion... So I suggest instead of going against the forum admin, you'd use better tools, tools that fit your needs. But finally, it is your decision, I cannot prescribe what you do, I can only give advice.
  8. Hi-MD - Discs == No. Old-Md-Disc formatted in Hi-MD == No. Old Disc formatted in old recorder, then filled in LP2 or LP4 Mode via PC == Maybe, but that has to be checked out, when the recorders are available. Hope, that this will end this thread for a while.
  9. Not to step on your toes, but how about using a different Browser? Try Opera and you will be amazed, how you can adjust the display to fit your eyes. Including magnification up to 1000%. And that includes graphics and Flash-thingies as well. Just wibble over here: http://www.opera.com/ Available for : Windows, Linux, Mac, OS/2, Solaris, FreeBSD, QNX and Smartphone/PDA.
  10. Well, it's thinner, has Time/Date-Stamp and an USB-connector on the cradle as well. And of course the coolness factor...
  11. *Ahemm!* How did you manage THAT? An eBay - Auction gone wrong?
  12. I say, it is worth it. But for another reason: Since it takes some time until home decks are available and therefore the line-mode is important as it's the only way to get a linear frequency response. I've had a R500 and even with Bass = off, it had still the low range amplified. And to make sure, that a simple correction with an equalizer doesn't work, that one was level-dependend as well... So, I go for the 900. The N1 is out of the question, as I want a full set of controls on the main unit.
  13. The quality as well... Sold off my R500 and got a R37 cheaply om eBay. Why? Better soundquality! Plus the additional connectors.
  14. I have to agree with joecool here, some more styles to choose from would be great. phpBB.com has quite a nice load of them as well, they can be previewed here: http://phpbb.com/styles/demo.php My favourites: ashFuel, dvdfuture, phpXP2 and the Vereor-Series. Oh, and additional smilies are welcomed as well.
  15. Connection to insiders is one thing, having an information signed and officially released by management or press department is a whole different thing. So the information might be correct, it is just not confirmed officially. However, I suggest that we await the CeBit, as tradeshows like this are used for official announcements. Heck, it's only ten more days...
  16. Add a description with explains the fault in simple words, that should do it. For sending it, registered mail is a good idea, adding shipping insurance is a good idea as well. Insurance should cover new price. And finally, address of sender and receiver should be included inside the packet as well, in case the sticker on the outside gets lost.
  17. And the guy, who is hosting that ISO-File loses his website when his webhoster receives a DMCA-Takedown-notice...
  18. Okay, looked it up and there are two ways to get the stuff into it. A: the aforementioned recorders and then via PC and smartmedia-card. B: the NH900, as it can switch it's output into line-mode and then via line in of the sampler. C: If you don't want to wait until April (June/July for the rest of the planet), take one of the existing models with Microphone input, e.g. the IM-DR420 from Sharp: http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sharp_IM-DR40...R410+DR420.html and of course line-in of the sampler again... Hope this helps...
  19. *Looks at his R37* It is strange, but some construction techniques survive for a long time in Sony-products. I agree with Jay and Kurisu, that this is a clamshell type and with the plastic visible at the side, it seems to be mechanically constructed like my R37. And that means, that the drive and PCB is mounted into a plastic frame and the top and the bottom shell are mounted onto that, leaving the side exposed. However, I strongly suggest not to project too much into a picture and to wait for the real units to arrive. Heck, it's only a month to go... Grrr... And we here in Europe have to wait until June/July.
  20. Yeah, I call that panicking... Definitely not better that CD(Linear PCM) as that is uncompressed. Ok, to give you a guideline, this will be my archival strategy: Non-important things, or where the quality is already reduced, like radio-recordings, will be recorded in Hi-SP(256K) and ends up on normal MDs. If the content is important to keep, it will be uploaded to the pc, converted into an open format (e.g. OGG-Vorbis at a high data rate) and dumped onto an DVD-R as archive. Important live recordings and Vinyl copies are done in Linear-PCM and uploaded to the pc as well, converted into wav and dumped off to DVD-R as well. Good quality DVD-Rs should survive 30+ years (FujiFilm claims 100+ years) and DVD-drives are now so widespread, there should be one available then. And if I see them becoming scarce, it is still enough time to copy to a new disc-format, Blue-Ray or AOD or whatever is the standard by then. Well, that depends on the Export function of the Sonic Stage software and what that allows. And how that turns out we will see when the first forum-members got their Hi-MD units up and running, so we have to wait until then. Atleast one more month...
  21. I assume, that your sampler is PC based. Right? Then a recorder with upload is the best choice here. The MZ-NH700/900 seem to me the best choices. Look here: http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-NH700.html http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-NH900.html Available in April in the US, June in Europe/Japan. Hope that helps.
  22. As long as it is a reliable medium. Right, to prevent the original recording from loss or damage. You can upload anything recorded via analog input onto your PC. Including Linear PCM. Old recordings made with currend equipment cannot be uploaded, that must go the old route - via optical in... And speaking of sound quality, I say 98 % will not hear any difference between Linear-PCM and current SP. And I guess that Hi-SP will be equal in quality. Maybe even better... But for that to find out, we have to wait for the actual recorders to appear. Concluding, I say, since we have enough experience with MD in terms of medium term storage, you don't have to panic now and think thoroughly about the best long term strategy.
  23. Well Mandeep, you are hitting a sore point here... But that's not MD's or Hi-MD's fault, this problem plagues everything stored in digital format. To come back to your first posting: First, all forms of transcoding from and to lossy codecs (ATRAC, AAC, MP3/4 et al) degrade the quality on each generation. And it doesn't matter which one, if it's a lossy one, you'll keep losing quality. Second, optical media degrades over time and no one knows how long a MD holds out as the oldest one produced is just 12 years old, and we're talking in human generations here And don't think, that CD-R is more reliable, multiple failed on me already, Audio as well as Data... Ok, so my idea would be: Keep your original recordings uncompressed on good quality media and make a compressed copy on cheaper media for everyday listening. the real problem is the availability of playback equipment, so choosing a medium for long term storage that has a big installed userbase is recommended here. and seeing the amount of cd-players sold, it might be a good idea to copy your stuff onto audio-cd as well. It's uncompressed and ubiquitous... so the possibility to get a player in thirty years from now is quite high. One questions keeps bugging me: How long will Sony support MD / Hi-MD in the future?
  24. That's true. However, the source material must be good in quality itself. Did the test with classical music (the local Library in my town has a wide choice to rent... ) and Jazz (Thom Rhotella / Without Words and Marcus Miller / M2). Especially the razor sharp bass riffs on 'M2' are quite a challenge for the encoder.
  25. Go for Hi-MD. You can record in Linear-PCM-Mode, which is according to the specs identical to the data format on an audio cd, giving the same high quality. In addition, you can upload the recordings to the pc via USB, which is much faster as well. Then simply burn the stuff on cd... A NH900 is on the list for me, when they come out here in Germany. The recorders: http://www.minidisc.org/part_Hi-MD_Sony.html The FAQ: http://www.minidisc.org/hi-md_faq.html Hope it helps.
