  1. Yes. To be exact, it is Price=typenumber-201. Except the NH1, think 1000 here and then it fits as well. Did some conversions here, the units are between 15 to 30% more expensive than in Europe. Since Sony doesn't give out any prices for Germany, I compared with Directshopper.de
  2. Does it record via LineIn/Mic? If yes, OpenMG is the problem. Remove and reinstall, maybe using SS2 instead. If not, Off to service... .............................. @bballman004: See your other thread.
  3. Something is wrong with the recording head, I think. Looks like the unit needs service. Hope, it is still under warranty...
  4. Hmm, try going out of group mode, I'd say...
  5. It would take the remaining space and the current datarate and calculates the remaining recording time from that. It does recognize them and the files will be converted into the selected ATRAC-Type and datarate. You want to select Hi-SP with 256kBit. The original files are unaffected by this, as there are copies created in the folder designated by SS2 for that(can be changed in the system options inside SS2). Urf... that one is old. You might run into compatibility problems, as Hi-MD units are USB 1.1 devices. Expect it not working correctly or not working at all. Expect next year.
  6. By using a portable Microphone-Amp+A/D-Converter combination. I'm too lazy to look that one up now, so I recommend to use a search-engine.
  7. Well, 'Plug In Power' only means, that there is an additional Voltage placed on the Microphone lines to provide for Bias-current for electret capsules. Recording time is almust unaffected by this, as these microphone capsules draw very little power. You don't need mains supply to record from microphone.
  8. They know them, but don't forget, that US-prices are usually stated without sales tax as sales tax is only applicable, if buyer and seller live in the same state. You might want to look here as well: http://www.minidisc-canada.com/shopdisplay...rtable+MiniDisc Which tells us again: Don't take the biggest retailer or take SonyStyle prices as the only truth. Shop around and compare and don't forget service quality too. Oh, and finally, Some US-Retailers ship to Canada as well...
  9. Yes. And yes. One difference: The NH1 has Time/Date-Stamp.
  10. You want to wait for a Hi-MD-recorder. In your case, every Hi-MD recorder is useable, except the NH600, as that has no microphone input. By using an Hi-MD unit, you avoid the soundcard. Two ways to bring your sound into the computer: playback via USB (realtime), you can record that with a Soundeditor or direct transfer using the supplied Software (SonicStage2) which is much faster. And export from that. Oh, and forget the Windows soundrecorder - It sucks like a black hole. Use something decent, like Goldwave or Audacity to edit your soundfiles. Or check, what has been included with your CD-Writer or soundcard. The N910 is a NetMD and these cannot upload via USB, so that one would only go via phone out -> LineIn. And you don't want that for quality reasons. Because of the upload capability, Hi-MD is ideal for your purpose. Btw, if the microphone is good enough, you will get above broadcast quality, in fact MD outperforms easily FM-Radio and most digital channels as well...(SP/Hi-SP) Personally, I would take the NH900, it seems more resistant to rough handling compared to the fragile looking NH1.
  11. No analog to Linear-PCM? That would be braindead... And it wouldn't make any sense - except for the fact, that Sony sells DAT-Recorders as well. But DAT is a dying format, almost nowhere available and hopelessly expensive, so I still think, it doesn't makes sense. Let's hope, it isn't true...
  12. I think, that has been answered before, so I'll keep this short. First, any Hi-MD-unit appears as USB-Memory-device. Driverless like an USB-Stick. WinXP/Win2K/WinME don't need drivers, it just appears as drive in Explorer. Second, you cannot dump files from a camera directly onto Hi-MD. Both are clients, and clients are not supposed to talk to each other. In Addition, the camera has to power the Hi-MD unit - In short, doesn't work. Third, to transfer music to and from Hi-MD, you need the supplied software.
  13. The European version has Analog/Digital in as well. (acc. to MDCenter.nl) Why the US-Version doesn't has any inputs, is incomprehensible. Obviously, again someone at Sony has been paid for NOT thinking...
  14. The N410 plays everything a current home deck can produce. The discs produced by the N410 can be played back in any MDLP-capable player/recorder/home deck. Hi-MD units play these as well.
  15. Welcome to the "Sorry, no product information available"-World of Sony - Online... It is a standard-phrase, when a product is not yet for sale. Prices of units (Holland): MZ-NH1: 479 € = 841,-- AUD MZ-NHF800: 399 € = 700,-- AUD MZ-NH900: 385 € = 676,-- AUD MZ-NH700: 299 € = 525,-- AUD MZ-NH600: 249 € = 438,-- AUD From comparisons between Minidisc Australia and Germany on current units lead to the fact, that you can expect a surcharge of 50 to 80% for down-under... PS: Before anyone jumps to conclusions, I don't think, that Minidisc Australia is more expensive, instead I think, the manufacturers are keeping the prices artificially high down there.
  16. Yes, I am. See here: http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=4897 To me, taking the USB-Connection out of the stand was a braindead decision. They need the plug on the cable anyway, they have the suitable socket as well ( one is in the main unit ), so, all is needed is an additional hole in the stand and a few wires and solder joints. Sometimes, it seems that people get paid for *NOT* thinking...
  17. 1) Yes. 2) Yes, with a uncertainty. When playing back, the sound is also played via USB. You are able to record that with a suitable software, e.g. CoolEdit. Upload via USB is also possible, but since noone has a recording Hi-MD yet, the export function couldn't be verified fully. But to be frank, upload without export function would be braindead... I say, watch this Forum for further info.
  18. 3. The cradle has no USB, charging only... Had been changed and there is a thread about this, but I'm too lazy to look it up now. *Yawns*
  19. Hmm, let's try an answer... It wasn't malice, that killed MD-DATA, it was stupidity. Instead of offering discs and drives at a competitive price AND adding the necessary PR-work, they let it slip into oblivion. Bernoulli drives and TapeStreamers won. Second, the same shitty marketing nearly killed MD-Audio as well. That MD is still alive outside Japan is to thank to some specialized dealers and internet sites like Minidisc.org. Third, when the Memory stick entered the market, Smart-Media and Compact-Flash had the biggest market share. And Compact Flash cards are still the most used memory cards. That Sony no longer produces the CD-Mavicams has a simple reason: Size and production cost. For a CD you need complicated mechanics, a memory stick just needs a piece of plastic with a few contacts tacked onto it. In addition, most digicams are relatively small - No space for a CD... Oh, and Sony's latest 8 Megapixel digicam takes CompactFlash as well. Plus, the digicam market is highly competitive, so manufacturers have to cut cost, whenever possible. Fourth: Hi-MD portable only? I don't think so. Sony started with portables first, as that is the segment with the highest sales. But expect home and car units later as well. I strongly suggest to look to Japan. And there are other licensees as well, so expect more choice next year... Hmm, not HiMD-Digicam? I think, a Hi-MD camcorder is more likely...
  20. Well, I suppose, that the AA-case is connected via cable, as I didn't see a screw-hole to affix the case on the photos. The coolness-factor is the reason for the price. The NH1 is very thin, and that drives the price up. The NH900 seems to me the more practical one... Other differences(NH1): Time-Date stamp, three-line remote and a one-line display on the unit. The NH900 has a one line remote and a three line display on the unit itself.
  21. And exactly that's, what doesn't work with lossy encoders. Remember, 80% of the data is thrown away during encoding(Hi-SP). Much more on lower bitrates. And that explains, why comparing waveforms doesn't work. Since the human ear does the same, the key here is to match the encoder with the characteristics of the ear. So, only listening tests work here. Noone has them. And no one wants them. We don't need perfect test results, we need the perfect test conditions to get objective results. And that means: Double blind test. Like it is done with pharmaceutical substances. And that quickly becomes a problem, as that needs time, a lot of time. And has to be repeated, whenever the encoder software is changed. So there is a point, when it becomes too expensive. The second best way is what I have done - matching bitrates and using the same soundcard and external D/A converter for all of them. Well, Yes and no. First, when testing software encoders, it is important to use a non-resampling soundcard, as with resampling cards the soundquality depends on operating system and drivers. Second, with SonicStage, what is encoded on the PC ends up on the MD. No reencoding is done on the recorder. Which brings us to the final question: How small are the differences between SonicStage and the final hardware? And in that case, we have to wait for the recorders with analog/digital inputs, so that we can check the whole chain. My tests aren't final as well, the encoders in the next SS2-version could be different, and the encoders in the recorders change with each chip generation as well, so later units can sound better - we have seen that in the past...
  22. Release date is one thing, physical delivery is another...
  23. Correct. But I found this in another thread: http://minidisct.com/forum/showthread.php?...?threadid=23011 So that problem is dissolving as well.
  24. @Gattuso: The CD was possibly copyprotected. In addition to preventing the ripping of the CD itself, Creative has the habit of 'policing' their customers. And in this case, the activated 'NoCopy'bit of the CD leads to this result. Using different software for ripping usually solves that problem. @LowEnd: The camera has no DC-voltage on the microphone connector, that's the reason for no sound. The Mic-in of a soundcard is quite different to that of an MD, which gives crappy sound in return. You need a few additional parts to get clean sound out of that. The Mic-in of a MD-recorder is specially designed for electret microphones, so that the usual two-wire capsules can be connected directly. Yes, the few additional parts I mentioned above are already included - Result: the mic works. That is also the reason, why it says 'Plug-in power' next to the Mic-input...
  25. Nope. You have to take the NHF800, if you want the tuner remote. When you look at the pic of the NHF800, you'll see, that the headphone-connector has to extra notches, that are not visible on the other units. NHF800: http://www.minidisc.org/images/sony_mznhf8...800_avwatch.jpg NH900: http://www.minidisc.org/images/sony_mznh90...900_avwatch.jpg The Headphone is plugged into the bottom connector. Round is Audio, the rectangular is remote. However, the alternative is a separate radio. Why? Digital radio! HD-Radio in the US, the better DAB radio elsewhere. Since the radio-remote is analog, it is not really made for the future... In addition, you cannot record from the remote.
