You won't need to spend much to get a 1Ghz or above these days. Look out for computer fairs, you can pick up cheap used or new machines that are a pretty decent spec as well as cheap componants. By rummaging in the bargain bins I have componants to build a 266mhz 64Mb RAM machine for a grand price of £5.30! ($9.97USD)

All you need to plug Hi-MD into your car if you have an Aux in on your radio is a 3.5 to 3.5mm lead. About £2 for 3metres (IF you need that much! ) Unit is a cheap £60 CD jobbie...

Buy a storage case? A saw, hammer, nails and a couple of bits of wood will do just fine...

I've actually noticed MORE detail in my music with Hi-SP. (Not with the cr@ppy standard Sony headphones - Sennheiser MX500's ~£20) Although the bit rate is lower than old skool SP, the compression has been improved so there is (allegedly) less artifacts in the sound.

At the moment I'd rather that they concentrated on increasing availability of the current 1GB disc and lowering purchasing costs! :wacky:

Hi-LP = pants. I'm very scientific...
-
Whatever it is it had better include a proper sepparates (Hi-Fi) deck....
-
It is the track and title information that I want, but I haven't registered CDDB. I just type my track names in manually.

To add to the PS2 idea, how about if you could use Hi-MD discs as you would memory cards? You could store LOADS of data on a single disc, probably enough to last the console's lifespan! I think its a shame that Sony didn't try and include Minidisc with PS/PS2 somehow, it would have given the format a much needed boost in the market.

Hi, I want to install simpleburner on another PC at home and wondered if it is possible to import the file(s) that store the CD details that I have typed in the current installation, into a new installation. Is this possible and if so which files would I need to copy? Any help appreciated, Cheers.

Not much happening in the UK, still having trouble finding the sacred 1GB discs even though most retailers listed November as release date. Are Sony still having manufacturing dificulties? Any chance of other companies (please god, TDK!!! ) manufacturing Hi-MD discs in the not too distant future?

Hi-LP is ok for music on the move, but if you listen to it properly there are loads of artifacts in the sound (on par with 128kbs MP3 in my opinion.) Putting music through the PC converted to 132kbs (LP2) delivers much better results. If only you could do this with the recorder without the very awkward sonicstage software... :wacky:

Whatever they decide to do it's still well into the future. I mean, we haven't even got the 1GB discs available in sufficient quantity (major mistake by Sony IMHO :whatever: ). Or a full size deck, until then the JB-920 will just have to soldier on... Such a shame that Sony comes up with some great products, but is terrible at marketing, and getting them released on time. Would a TV commercial advertising Hi-MD kill them? I saw a Philip's one for lightbulbs today for gawd's sake....

I didn't know a compression artifact could sound exactly like an acoustic or bass guitar?

I have done quite a few re-formatted 74/80 min discs in Hi-SP mode and the quality is awsome for a 'compressed' format. I can actually hear new notes out of my music that I've never heard from years of playing the same albums on a CD player! And I get around 140mins on a standard 80min disc! Now if Sony would only get off their backsides and make a full-size Hi-MD deck.......
-
Thanks very much for your help. I've ordered an NH-700 in silver. (For some reason £8 cheaper than the blue one!)
-
Things like it had a poor user interface and not many inputs. (Although I think the European model has an Optical input?) One thing I would like about the 600 is that it takes good ol' AA 'pencil' batteries. Don't fully trust these chewing-gum stick rechargeable things... :whatever:

All this has probably been covered before, but I haven't visited the forum for a while now so please bear with me. I am in the UK and currently deciding which Hi-MD unit to get to replace my Sharp MD-MT88 portable. I currently use the portable to make MDLP compilation discs from CDs (via an Optical cable & my hi-fi) and have no experiance of NetMD. Will Hi-MD be a big step up for me?? I was going to go for the cheap MZ-NH600, but read a few bad things about it so will probably go for the MZ-NH700. Anyone have any good/bad opinions of this model? How much recording time of LP2 quality audio can you get from a re-formatted 74/80min disc? And how much uncompressed PCM audio will a reformated disc hold? And lastly, when will Sony make a full size Hi-MD Hi-fi deck? I'm still waiting for a worthy successor to my MDS-JB920.

Have a Hi-MD question that doesn't need a thread? [part II]
MDGB2 replied to Christopher's topic in Minidisc
A one line question: Is there an Official release date for the UK? After searching the net some people have a vague idea it will be sometime in June. (Hang on, it is June - so where are they?????? ) Are there going to be any restrictions on which models are released in Blighty, will we get the top of the range unit? We wants one precious, and we wants it soon! :rasp: (Okay, so it's longer than one line, but we gots a bit carried away precious, yes we dids ) -
Don't know how true this is but I once read that MD as a re-writable format is much more stable than CD-RW because the grooves in the recording layer are permenant and new data is simply written into them. CD-RW burns an entirly new recording layer evey time it is re-written, so becomes weak and corrupts. Or something like that... :wacky:

why MD with mp3 support? why not mp3 with MD support!
MDGB2 replied to Spare Tire's topic in Minidisc
Another advantage is the fact that the amount of storage space for Hi-MD is upgradable (just stick another disc in! ) Once mp3 portables are full you need to erase tracks to make room (or fork out a couple of hundred for a higher capacity model) -
And they do hiss (or it did with an old Goodmans one for a CD i had) so it kind of defeates the object of digital noise free music. Both my dad and brother have MD units in their car and they are awesome, sound just as good as a CD player. If car manufacturers would give the option for MD decks in their cars the formats popularity would sky-rocket.

Works out at around $6.99 per disc or £3.81 GBP. Still a reasonable price for what should be a 1GB re-writable storage media (and hopefully more reliable than CD-RW).

Mmmm....looks like an NH900 for me then (if it ever comes out in the UK! ). My current portable is a Sharp MD-MT88, and while it makes excellent recordings the titling procedure of pushing a button a million times to get to the desired character is a pain in the bum. A jog dial would make things a lot easier.
-
Will all the units being released have a jog dial? Although I have found out that the NH900 deffinately has one, the other units including the budget NH600 look to have one as well, but I have found no info to confirm it. Any ideas? Thanks.
