  1. E-bay! £50 with a 1GB disc. (It also has an AC input.... )
  2. Ha! The same thing happened to me when I installed this on my second machine. Would not pick up the Nh600 or 700 in SB and SS (after I'd transfered a dozen or so albums in 132kbps - D'oh! ). Least I'm not the only one.... Can't someone hack simple burner to transfer in 132kbps (LP2)?
  3. I bought a second hand Hi-MD unit (Nh600 w/line in) to bash it about and use it as a portable, leaving the Nh700 for 'best' . Never had an MD unit fail, touch wood. My first, a 1997 vintage MZ-F40, took some real abuse and still works perfectly.
  4. Here's mine... [attachmentid=793] Hehe....
  5. Yes, I regularly lob my discs around the room. Good for juggling too....
  6. I've not had any fail........yet. I don't think any technology can be considered 100% reliable, especially when recording in real-time.
  7. Errm.....PCM recording.....
  8. This is becomming a pretty common question, and the answer at the moment is no. Only Hi-MD decks currently available are from Onkyo. Maybe Sony has something up it's sleeve for 3rd generation models....
  9. I wonder if Sony's boffins will work on an improved Hi-LP codec? It's not really that far off being decent, certainly on par with the lower MP3 bitrates (128kbps and under) Although bad compared to LP2, you can still listen to it as music (which is more than can be said for the same bitrate in MP3 )
  10. Just a pity that they're marketing is pants....
  11. I use the 'Hi-MD' cable for my digital camera as well. At the end of the day, it's just a USB lead (apart from those 'clamp' things that don't really do anything.....)
  12. Arrgh! When will Sony make a deck? When?! Just re-brand the Jb940/80 with Hi-MD and I'd be happy......
  13. Don't know about reliability being an issue. My Sony MZ-F40 (1997 vintage) took a lot of hammer and still works fine. Looked kind of cute when I got it (much smaller than my tape walkman) but compared to modern portables its a bit of a house brick..... What I'd really like to see is an Hi-MD with a DAB radio....
  14. Which it isn't, not by a long way...
  15. I think all these statements about Hi-MD being 'on the way out' or going "professional only" laughable. So Sony have introduced two models for use on a Mac - that's good news not bad. One of the reasons they maybe 'upload only' could just be software issues (PC and MAC ain't the same....). Bear in mind also that these units were not released with the rest of Gen2, so may be a bit of a 'rush job.' At the end of the day, this format (Hi-MD) is still in it's infancy. Remember that original MD only really became popular (outside Japan) in the mid-late 90s a few years after it was first released, when the prices of units dropped and better codecs (atrac 4.5 etc.) and features significantly improved quality. Just chill!
  16. Erm, no it's not. In fact memory cards I bought for my digital camera actually say on the back of the packet "eventually this device will lose its memory storage ability and will have to be replaced." A Minidisc will last much longer.
  17. $369-500 (+ expensive memory cards....) Hi-MD discs are a lot cheaper than equivalent capacity memory cards. And it looks like a cheap plastic toy......
  18. It looks like the new blue media does not have the 'Shock Absorbing Mechanism' (well, they say 'mechanism,' but its really just a bit of coating around the edges...)
  19. I was thinking about a 980 as a stop-gap measure. I can get one for about £210. But if I buy one I know Sony will announce Hi-MD decks shortly after.......
  20. My £250 CD player sounds way better than my vintage JB920. Its got a Burr Brown 24bit DAC which is one of the best in the budget-midrange. I wish someone would build an MD deck (preferably Hi-MD!) with one in.
  21. If you can fiddle with the equaliser settings, Hi-LP can be made to sound resonable. Not quite up to LP2 though.
  22. LP2 - Quality. Hi-LP - Capacity. Your choice.
  23. Bought a 'new' Hi-MD! Is it the MZ-RH910? Or even the RH10 with its beautiful OLED display? NO! A second-hand MZ-NH600!!!! And I must say that its not as bad as its cracked up to be. To me the build quality is better than my NH700 (although the 'silver' is wearing off on the jog-dial), and as its a UK model it has a DC input and an Optical line input! The previous owner appears to have hacked the EQ and volume settings as well! Who needs MP3 support anyway....
