    Hi-md Deck Query

Doubt it. Sony would seriously be shooting themselves in the foot if this was really their was of thinking.
  2. My MDS-JB920 deck will not accept digital audio from my Playstation 2 with a DVD movie, but I can play the same movie on a proper DVD player and record the same audio digitally! Pity you can't do that with the evil 'Copy protected' CDs (which you can burn on a computer anyway.....
  3. A car unit (able to play back mp3, even though it sucks) would be sweeet.... I currently have around 9 CDs in my very small glove box (now totally full!) and I could get all of them on a single Hi-MD disc! Need a car unit! C'mon Sony! See sense! (Then licence it out to Panasonic and other companies who will make the same units for a lot cheaper..... )
  4. Why do Sony insist on giving Europeans cr@ppy, watered down models with limited features? Just don't understand it......
  5. If the battery is Ni-MH, then it shouldn't suffer from the 'memory' effect that is common with Ni-Cd rechargeables. I have never used the supplied Ni-MH battery with my Nh700 (700mAh?! Hah!) and use a set of 1300mAh Ni-MH instead. They last two minutes in a digital camera but about two weeks in my Walkman, and go on for quite a long time after the indicator starts blinking.

    Rh710

Hi, This unit doesn't seem to get much mention, has anybody got one? Is it a suitable replacement for the 1st Gen NH700?
  7. Assuming you're after more music on a disc, why not re-rip to Atrac3 105kbps? From a few listens it seems to be very close to LP2 (132kbps) and will get a few more hours out of the disc. Cheers.
  8. I don't like the "For walkman use" branding. Does that mean no full size decks soon or am I reading too far into this?? I've just stocked up on 12 of the 'classic' blue/purple ones, d'oh!
  9. I think MD is suitable for long term strorage. I mean, I've got analogue tapes that are other 25 years old, and they still play! (although you can imaginge the sound quality! ) I doubt anybody predicted they could last that long. Digital media is just data, so the sound should not 'degrade' at all (unless it is damaged and becomes difficult to read i.e. scratches on a CD). Unless the disc fails then you loose everything.....

    Himd & Ps3 Usb

I'd see that as more of a 'toy' than a serious Hi-Fi deck. If you plugged it into an audio out on a PS(2/3 whatever) it would be the same as connecting it to an amp via a RCA to 3.5mm lead (probably with less quality, it is a games console afterall). Not much control over whats happening if the unit is out of arms reach. Unless they put a scrolling display on the front and a nice big remote control (one button for each letter please!)
  11. As you can't record SP on a Hi-MD formatted disc anyway (even with 1st Gen), I don't see what all the fuss is about. Would be nice to be able to record LP2 directly onto a Hi-MD formatted disc though....
  12. They could write music to a disk like a normal recording and then remove the erase tab slider thingie! Technically it would then be read-only... Bit far fetched like......
  13. Anything can be "mass produced." You just need a big enough production line. Unless you mean they can't be 'pre-recorded?' How do you know about software? Just because it isn't available now doesn't mean it will be unavailable in the future...
  14. Hi-MD unit (portable), capable of recording all format modes (especially LP2) on a Hi-MD formatted disc via digital input without using Sonicsuck or any other software. Digital input AND output. Drag and drop capability for transferring music via a PC (drag and drop WAV files from a CD in explorer, with the recorder re-encoding them to Hi-SP whatever 'on the fly.' That would be sweeet....) Ability to upload music from ANY MD format (mainly Old Skool SP) directly to a PC for storage or burning onto CD. Lightweight, strong metal case. AA power supply. HD Digital amp. A proper remote control (not connected to headphones) with LCD display (backlit) for when unit is connected up to hi-fi and out of arms reach... Coffee machine optional....
  15. If PSP ran on Hi-MD the popularity of the format would skyrocket! Maybe for PSP2....
  16. Olive oil is good for ears, probably NOT so good for electrical equipment though.... Some purists say that cleaning your lens (on a CD player) around once every two weeks improves performance, others say it just buggers the lens up. Personally, I've never cleaned the lens on an MD portable, but I have on a deck (cleaned the recording head for the first time in 6 years of ownership the other day. If it starts clicking or skipping, then it needs cleaning.
  17. Yes but SOME albums, (believe it or not) are NOT available on CD but are on MD! So Minidisc is the only option! Plus pre-recorded MDs are really kwaii! **
  18. Thats a shame, especially as I've started buying pre-recorded MDs off eBay, but they don't even make those anymore....
  19. Coaxial cable (75ohm) has always been considered "superior" to Toslink (optical) for recording digital music. Don't know why as they're both digital, although they do transfer the signal differently (Coax - Electrical, Toslink - Optical)
  20. Technically, transfering music via digital Coaxial cable is superior to optical cable. Can't really do that however until someone makes a proper Hi-MD deck... I currently use Simple Burner 2E for transfering CDs in Hi-SP mode, SonicStage SUX!!!
  21. You can still get new Sony MD decks, and the MDS-JB980 is a decent top-budget model. (Although I still won't replace my JB-920!
  22. Indeed. If the hack for the RH-10 is successful (seems to be by the replies on the board) I'll probably get the RH-10 as its only £40 more (also can't resist that display....) If I had enough Wongs I'd get both...
  23. Hehe.... Well you're right there.
  24. I can't decide between a MZ-NH1 or a RH-10 (with bl**dy volume restrictions).
  25. I don't think I'll buy a new unit until something is done about this. Maybe a special 'UK version' - they do it with Hi-Fi decks. Take off all the nappy-wearing, big girl's blouse restrictions Sony, and watch your sales soar! Bloody Cheese Eating Surrender Monkeys..... Appoligies to anyone reading this who is French...
