  1. CF is awesome, cheap, but its so for a reason. It's not the fastest device out there (unless you buy high grade CF) and it's bigger, so you can use bigger semiconductors on the lower scale of CF capacities and subsidize the cost of smaller ones for larger capacities by making the smaller capacities a bit more money than really needed. Memory Stick, especially Pro, etc., is inherently faster. Just like SD. The technology has progressed beyond CF, even though CF is my perferred choice. It is no surprise that Sony would decide to develop a new format as CF and Smart Media were the really two big contenders at the time; they wanted something with a smaller, slimmer form factor. And now with Memory Stick Duo..it's the size of an SD card, roughly. But, unlike the diamond industry, which is controlled by DeBeers and has a high artificially placed price point because of controlled diamond supply, flash memory is not cheap to produce. No matter how you slice it. Static RAM is not, and may never be, as cheap as CDs. And I wouldn't want it that way either--may not be so good for the enviroment  . Anyway....oh, and I also find the spiel about "if a woman knows.." offensive. :-P ~a.i.h.
  2. I took a photography class my last year of high school. I was sad I didn't start earlier; it was sort of fun. I have a cheap SLR, tho I use it. I'm slightly considering getting another SLR, but I'm not sure with the way film is going. I have a Nikon Coolpix2100, and I'd recommend it highly (as well as a Coolpix3100, the 3MP version.) to people for general use. However, they don't make them anymore. And the benefits I found with the camera (used CF, mainly) and the nice things about it (came with a CRV3 battery; now they come with crappy alkalines) just tells me Nikon really isn't caring/is becoming more "competitive." I'd just as soon recommend a Panasonic with a Leica lens... I've toyed with the Digital Rebel (if I recall correctly, that's 300D to you people outside of North America) and it's pretty fun. It's supposed to work with all old EOS lenses, but I found out today that this, in fact, is not the case as someone came back with one and showed me how it errored out 80% of the time when he had the lens on. ~a.i.h.
  3. DAT? Heh. Anyway, I love music. I can see a lot of differnce between 105KPS ATRAC and a CD, but I'm willing to live with it because it still sounds derned good. The problem with CDs are they were designed like the SACD and DVDs--to be played. Not to be recorded, not to be used as storage devices. Those trickled down over time as a technology came to light to do this. MDs were designed to be recorded, used, abused. They're very high quality, if you have the right equipment to record and to listen to them. Being an audiophile can (and probably many times is) all in the head. The concept behind ATRAC is very sound: take what the human ear actually hears and only record that. They did a pretty dern good job. Beyond that, SACDs and all the DVD crap was made just so you could lose your rights to digitally copy and rip your music as you see fit. ~a.i.h.
  4. I got into this forum not too long ago; I began reading more and more posts and decided one day to actually participate. I grew tired just reading everything on Minidisc.org. I probably have contributed something since I've been here, I've also never had an official welcome. So I'm just awesome like that. I have become a huge fan of the format in the short time I've lived with it (aprox. 6 months) and find it to be not only good as far as size vs. quality, but its just plain fun'n'cool. ~a.i.h.
  5. I'll look into those BJ...maybe I can find some on emusic. But I'm sure I can easily track down their perspective sites. ~a.i.h.
  6. Sega was sooo awesome. I have the company's hey-dey in rememberance by naming my female rat Sega, so everytime she doesn't come I can yell her name. Its just like the Genesis/Saturn commercials... ~a.i.h.
  7. That's sad to hear. I hope they do come out with Hi-MDs for everyone's enjoyment. I was going to get a Sharp Hi-MD player when they came out so I wouldn't risk my Sony Hi-MD player/recorder...but I guess I'll have to settle for whatever other brand lisences the technology.. ~a.i.h.
  8. Well I got R1 Player V2 to work without a hitch! Awesome. I just wish I knew what was up with Real Player 10...oh well. It was probably just introduced for the new Rhapsody, largely like the newest MM JB. I like how Real Player does things, tho. I hope the Hi-MD stuff will be able to benefit from it... ~a.i.h.
  9. *scratches forehead* Yes, the more you post the same question the sooner a reply comes... ~a.i.h.
  10. OK, I know this is a minidisc forum, but I am trying to get Real Player up and running so I can try/perhaps switch over to it's way of doing things instead of Sony's software. I have an issue with it that so far the people at Real Player are unable to solve. I can get it to install, I can get it to "register" with Real Player, but after that everytime I try and run it it says this: There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive DeviceHarddisk1DR2 And then it crashes. And creates an error log, where it puts said error log is beyond me. The directory structure DeviceHarddisk1...I can't figure out where thats coming from... I've tried cleaning my registry with some apps. I've created a whole new profile to install/run it under. Its a pain...I'd really hate to have to reinstall windows because of this. I have managed to get older versions of real players to work, but they all kinda say the same message. But RP8 was able to still work. To top it all off, this isn't the first program I've had trouble with that encountered the same error. What version of RP do you need to get the plugin for an MD player...? Does anyone know? Thanks for the help! ~a.i.h.
  11. The materials are, for sure. The method of compression and use of the magnetic write head...that may be questionable. ~a.i.h.
  12. Errr that sucks. Is that a flaw with all Sony's? I have an MZNE-410, which is rather new..do you think they took the time to look at this flaw? -= Bad business if they didn't. I'm still going to spring for a new Hi-MD, but I'll definitely think hard about getting an extended service plan... ~a.i.h.
  13. I grew into metal when I was 12/13. My first "hard" album compared to the old rock'n'roll I listened to as a kid was Offspring's "Smash." I then went in for Metallica's 'reloaded' which blew me away as far as power. And from there, it went to White Zombie and now I can listen to Cannibal Corpse, Cradle of Filth, Deicide, etc. But mainly right now I'm listening to a lot of industrial. I like bands such as Front242, Front Line Assembly, Unit:187, Nitzer Ebb..and I luv Fear Factory and Static-X. I have also recently got into a band I highly recommend called Zeromancer. They're awesome. And of course, industrial metal staple's Rammstein are always good. Beyond that, I listen to some stoner metal when I'm playful (Monster Magnet, highly recommend) and akin to a lot of kids my age now, I was into Marilyn Manson at his peak and still am in to him today. In my eyes, no artist (even though he can be very vulgar) today has the same depth he has shown with his three big albums, and I loved his new one to death. Plus, emusic and download.mp3.com and garageband.com give me a lot of indie choices. I myself am on garageband.com now, too...though I wouldn't call my music particularly music.. ~a.i.h.
  14. iPods have a cool factor with the YM and general younger audience, not MD players. Plus I think it's the Sony record label doing it, not the electronic company. ~a.i.h.
  15. Or you could try the old fashion way..get an IRC client and start browsing the channels. ~a.i.h.
  16. Yeah, it varies a lot for me too. Mostly it's between 15-25 but sometimes I go all the way to 30. I use the 19USD street style head phones, which always seemed at a good price point compared to how long they last (a year) rather than dumping my money into expensive bulky things and rarely use them so they last longer... ~a.i.h.
  17. 20. I bought my MZNE410 around xmas time last year, so I havn't had it very long but its grown on me. I had an MP3-CD player before, but I sold it. I still have one in my car tho..I just like the size and quality of sound to MD versus MP3, but it really doesn't matter anymore since all my music is now on my HD in MP3 format... ~a.i.h.
  18. In fact..does anyone have a handy chart that shows you what the compression rate is on LP2 compared to SP, since Sony was not kind enough to show it for me in SS2? I'd definitely be very happy if someone diiiid! ~a.i.h.
  19. Yes, let us hope. Sometimes company sites will make their items more money on their website/catalog to not cause issues with retailers. Hopefully that is what is happening here... ~a.i.h.
  20. I would not use a tape converter. They burn out the tape heads on your deck. I learned that the hard way before I got my CD-MP3 player...it sucked. ~a.i.h.
  21. One thing I don't like about this new SS2 is the way it presents albums. It tells you the time it would take on the disc based in SP mode, but I record in LP2. So I don't know really how much I can stuff on an MD in LP2 mode; in 1.5 it gave you a MB value for the album and you could cross reference that with how much space was left on the disc... ~a.i.h.
  22. That *might* be the case. Have you tried unhooking and reconnecting your MD player?
  23. Bah! No 1 GB blanks to be found? Not even on the Sony site? This reminds me of the whole Sony fiasco w/their DVD-Rs being in short supply for their camcorders. Of course you don't need a Sony DVD-R for their camcorder, but only Sony makes the 1GB blanks right now...when can we expect other manufactures to start producing this stuff? ~a.i.h.
  24. The one I'd get wouldn't be a head unit, it'd be something I'd mount maybe in my trunk. I already have a Sony CD-MP3 player. And yes, it doesn't play ATRAC cds. I considered getting a line in and playing my MD that way, but it'd be feeding it analog so whats the point? ~a.i.h.
  25. Oh yeah, I have more faith in MO (or magnetic in general) storage than optical. Everyone says DVDs will last a long time..there are instances where professionally stamped CDs from the 80s are showing bit rot. On the other hand, the hard drives in those old Apple's every elementary school has in their school still works after 25 years of constant use! ~a.i.h.
