    We are #1.

Of the mods, the only ones who actively don't use MD is myself and Skyther, and myself only recently. Everyone else, I believe, does. And yes I lost my short-lived enthusiasm for the format. Now I want my iPod Mini.
  2. CompactFlash, or other makes and manners of flash memory.
  3. I did a bit heavier research, and it turns out that this device is for a specific model of Video MD unit. I don't know which, but it's old... quite old.
  4. Next time, please don't double post. Edit your previous post to add new information. Anyhow, to answer all of your questions, it does not sound like MD is for you. Even Hi-MD is fundamentally limited by Sony's DRM to allow you only ONE upload of your analog recorded tracks. And once they are uploaded, they are either gone or unplayable off the MD itself. Even if SonicStage trashes the track. And a good percentage of the time, SonicStage destroys tracks uploaded at random. You could always use the old method (recording to PC real-time via the USB playback option) but that isn't all that much better. It's still slow and real-time. There are several CF-based recorders out there, but they are quite a bit more expensive than Hi-MD. Perhaps if you found a way to live with the limitations of Hi-MD, it would perform well for you, but if getting the tracks to the computer faster than real-time is the most important thing to you, I would not use Hi-MD. And it sounds like your N707 may have a problem with the magnetic write head. I don't know all that much about fixing it, so I can't help you there.
  5. Sale pending on the DS8. JE330 + discs and such is up for auction on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=5731530167
  6. Bumppricedrop! I would also be willing to trade everything listed for an iPod Mini, either pink or silver.
  7. oops. it has digital out. my bad. thank you for correcting me. dunno what I was thinking.
  8. My home rig has totally ruined me for MD... I'm wanting to switch to an iPod for portable, but I don't have the cash. So, I'm considering selling all my MD related stuff. This includes: 1 MDS-JE330 MD deck (ATRAC version 4.5), 1 Sharp MD-DS8 MDLP player, 15 MDs (that have my music on them), 2 Ni-MH gumstick batteries (Sony 1400 mAh type), a store-bought switching power supply for recharging the DS8 (5V DC 100-240V AC world voltage), 1 3ft toslink cable for use with the MD deck, 1 Sony MZ-N505 NetMD recorder (broken, does not play but records & titles in SonicStage and real-time perfectly). $235 shipped within the continental US. International would require higher shipping fees. PM me if interested. Sale Pending on the DS8. The deck + extras is up on eBay. Edit: No, Chris, I'm not leaving the forums. Just trying to buy me a fscking iPod!
  9. Kevin's recommendation of the DR420 is a sound one. It is in fact a NetMD model and can be used like a wannabe MP3 player (blargh) but more importantly, it's a good unit. While it is the "budget" model Sharp Auvi, it is much more solidly constructed than the Sony low-end models. The Auvi 1-bit units tend to sound quite warm and nice.
  10. I think the button placement and ergonomics of the 40ELK are terrible, IMO. The backlight is also rather dim. The remote that comes with the NH900, the RM-MC38EL, is easier to use one-handed and the backlight is brighter.
  11. chaintech av-710. 30 bucks. 'nuff said. It can be 24 bit, but not on MD. MD is the same as standard CD (16 bit, 44.1kHz 2 channel). optical digital can transmit 24-bit data; just look at SACD decks.
  12. Ketto, what you have to watch for on MD units is the encoding DSP version. In the case of Hi-MD, it's pretty much the highest version of ATRAC/ATRAC3/ATRAC3+ that exists, so you can rest assured that any Hi-MD unit will have the best possible sound quality of any MD unit based on encoding. Higher end units with special headphone amplifiers (such as the Sony HD Amplifier) supposedly add something to the sound and make it more full and warmer; however as I only have experience with non-Hi-MD models, I can't say for certain. I do know that the Sharp digital amp is quite impressive, but they have not been licensed to manufacture any Hi-MD units yet. As for recording quality, Hi-MD PCM is bit-for-bit identical to CDs (although this is the subject of some debate). It's also very big and fills up a 1GB Hi-MD disc with under 2 hours of music. Hi-SP is close to legacy SP (ATRAC 4.5R) but not quite as good yet. It should be light-years ahead of the old ATRAC 1 that the MZ-1 used. This is the preferred listening format, I'd think. Sound quality is also going to be dependent on the sort of headphones or earphones you use with your unit. Check around the forums for recommendations and reviews of various cans. Hope this helps you out.
  13. I'm almost positive that the pain was being caused by the location of the pads/cups and the pressure they were placing on my head... The pain continued, and started, even with no music being played over the headphones. Changing the position and taking short breaks seems to alleviate the pain, if not eliminate it completely.
  14. I got chronic tinnitus from guns... Went out to play with my stepfather's Glock 23 a year or so ago and only wore cheap foamies; apparently did not get a good seal. The trees were on my left side and they served as a sort of sonic reflector that bounced the sound at my left ear... as a result, only my left ear rings. Everyone seems to think my ear problem is fluid in it, or a wax blockage... I will get something like a wax removal thingus and see if that helps. The problem is only in my left ear though... I can't see a doctor about this; the clinic will only give me ear drops (non prescription) and tell me to get lost while they stitch up all the GSWs and help the ODed druggies keep breathing. I'm going to try a few things and maybe talk to someone a bit more knowledgeable before deciding if I need to risk the $75-something diagnosis fee that it costs to go see a doctor here.
  15. *cry* Well it's not hurting right now, and as I found out while listening the other night, that it was not dependent on the volume of my music--quiet or normal listening volume. Strangely enough, it would not go away, even if I turned the music off, until I took the headphones off my head. Rest is a problem with me... I have insomnia. I can't fall asleep unless I am so exhausted my body forces me to. I've always had a problem with this and I've managed to somewhat work it out without too many sleeping pills. I don't listen to music very loud on my DT440s; my room is quiet, and the cans sound good enough that I don't need to crank it up to cover up bad reproduction. ANd it's only my left ear, the one that has tinnitus, that is acting up. My friend who is a nurse, he thinks there might be fluid in my ear, but has no clue how to remove it. And I can't go to the doctor; I don't have insurance.
  16. This may sound odd, but I really don't know who else to ask. Sometimes when listening to my rig, actually frequently, my left ear has been hurting in a peculiar way. Now I do not listen to any kind of high volume. My room is utterly silent and I can hear myself typing much louder than the sound of the music coming from the DT440s. I have tinnitus in my left ear, and it's always bugged me in one way or another, but this is very annoying and a little scary. It feels like a slight, sharp, cold pain... like someone's poking me with a cold piece of ice in the ear. It's not painful to the point where I'm in agony, but it is very irritating. Anyone know what might be going on? I hope I can still listen to my cans...
  17. Lame. LAME. L-A-M-E. Definitely not getting a PSP. And Sony still means shortsighted in Japanese. I was honestly more interested in the media format than the PSP itself; like I said before I don't have time for portable gaming. Too much music to listen to, too much trouble to get into.
  18. I usually queue up my entire digital music library in fb2k and connect the 'phones to the sound card and let them burn-in overnight. That way, the cans get a reasonable variety of music with which to burn them in with (although I dunno if this is really desirable or necessary). Of the 'phones I own, only the Shure E2cs really needed to be burned in. The little 4-conductor HP-MD33S plugs I bought for the DS8 didn't need it, and my DT440s were bought (somewhat) used, so they were already burned in.
  19. Well, I somewhat gathered that UMD... Universal Media Disc... would be used for more than PSP, simply by its name. But maybe I'm reading too much into the situation.
  20. For a bit more than ER6 I believe you can find Shure E3cs... not quite as expensive as ER-4Ps, but I've heard they aren't as "delicate" as the Etys are. I've seen them for 170ish.
  21. It was my understanding that Advent Children was a Japan-only release, in theaters and otherwise. Portable gaming systems don't have a terribly large appeal to me; I use my MD player far more often and there are many many situations where portable audio can be used to while away the time when something that requires your full attention would not be practical. I can't see myself spending the 80USD for a GBA-SP, much less close to 200 for a PSP. Making UMD a ROM-only format seems like Sony is still the Japanese word for shortsighted.
  22. Hmm. Not owning any very expensive earbuds myself (my most expensive pair being Shure E2cs, which are not expensive) I would only guess that some would be more fragile than others. I believe that Etys are rather rugged, but taking care of them would make them last even longer. They certainly appear to be designed with durability and repeated use in mind.
