Try picking up a Chaintech AV-710. They are great. Sound good and cost little. I use one myself. They usually run from 25-30USD.

I've found in my experience that Bose is usually overpriced and not as good as something that generally costs less. I don't know a lot about speakers (I'm a headphone girl lol) but I would suggest checking out those sites that Jade linked to. You might also want to check Head-Fi; while it's predominately for headphone nerds, there's quite a few who also have loudspeaker setups for their source components as well as cans. http://www.head-fi.com

When I wrote that Hi-LP equates to LP4, I did not mean that it was necessarily identical. What I meant was that Hi-LP is the Hi-MD replacement for LP4. Although, I'm sure that Hi-LP is superior to LP4 by sheer virtue of the fact that it uses M/S Joint Stereo (lossless) rather than Intensity Stereo (which is very lossy). I'd say not. I doubt seriously that ATRAC3+ is twice as efficient as MP3. I'm sure that 64kbps ATRAC3+ sounds better than 64kbps MP3, but I do not think that it sounds better than an encoded track with twice the bandwidth. However, as is commonly said about audio in general, your mileage may vary.

You can transfer tracks you recorded with the NH1; you cannot transfer tracks recorded in legacy MD mode (i.e. on a non-Hi-MD model). It is a limitation with the original MD format. Watch out though; SonicStage has been reported by several folks to randomly nuke live-recorded tracks that you try to transfer to the PC. And since it only allows you to make one single transfer... there goes your recordings.

He won't buy me anything.

Well I got him on a boomer dual shotty for somewhere around 450ish a few times, but he usually kills me shortly afterwards. I like nak.

Well, Audiocubes carries several remotes for Sony MD units. I believe the model I mentioned previously is 50USD, but it's far superior to the rotary commander unit. It is backlit LCD display with most of the MD unit's playback functions on the remote itself. It can be clipped to a shirt and is a pass through type remote in which the headphones plug into a jack on the end.

I actually beat him a couple of times when he wasn't using his pro account... oiy. It wasn't fair.

A PIMETA is a nice amp to have, even portable... I just recently finished one myself, albeit it's not portable; I made it a home unit. MINT amps I've heard to be nice as well, they're basically a cut down META42 design that'll fit inside a mint tin. Rather cute, and probably sound better than your average CMoy. I would suggest earbuds for motorcycle use, unless you can get someone to mod the cans for you or you know how to do it without messing them up. I would wince if I accidentally ruined an expensive set of cans. I would make recommendations, but it's better to ask someone who's had experience with more than just Beyerdynamic DT440s, Shure E2cs and EX71s.

Well, it's like this. Hi-SP (256kbps ATRAC3+) equates to SP (292kbps ATRAC 4.5R) Hi-LP (64kbps ATRAC3+) equates to LP4 (66kbps ATRAC3) Hi-LP 48 (48kbps ATRAC3+) equates to... suck There is no ATRAC3+ version of an LP2 type bitrate (~132kbps).

more accurately, it is this. http://www.tangentsoft.net/audio/pimeta it's a portable headphone amp (that can be built to be non portable, like mine is) that is rather inexpensive to make and sounds quite good. Skyther claims he can build one in 30 minutes. After I started putting it together I realized I could probably do the same. Took me about an hour and a half of soldering, wiring up temporary jacks and testing. no oscilliation, no faults, everything working well. Pretty good for my first shot at building a DIY amplifier, ne?

Try using a pair of 'phones that are very high efficiency, such as the Shure E2cs or D66 eggos.

I don't know if you can buy the rotary commander remote anywhere but packaged in the car kit MD units. Why not just get a regular remote? I use it with mine in my car; all you have to do is just learn the buttons by feel. The RM-MC33EL is a good remote that works with all NetMD units.

My Pimeta is finished! I tested it this morning. None of the casework and wiring is really done yet, just simple ins and outs and power jack for testing purposes. I'm pleased with the sound, considering how I pretty much followed the schematic, and I have <20mV absolute DC offset voltave everywhere, so I'm pleased that I didn't wire anything backwards. I'll post pictures of my system when I get the casework on the pimeta done... and my DV-563A comes in. *runs off to get wire and a case and... lunch. *

Hard carrying case w/customizable interior
aeriyn replied to smkranz's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
My dad has one of these; except it has a Pentax medium-format camera in it rather than MD equipment. I'd like to find a case about this shape and general size, but not necessarily built for travel; I want a storage box for my DT440s. Any ideas? -
Sony Adapter/Battery Charger/*something* needed
aeriyn replied to jstarz927's topic in Technical, Tips, and Tricks
you can generally find the dual cell version of the 7HT on ebay for around 14USD. -
The battery life of the NH1 for playback isn't all that wonderful either if you compare it to other MD units, such as previous Sony units (with 30+ hours of battery life on a NiMH gumstick cell).
-
Well I don't think my setup is better than yours; in fact I believe it not to be... a pretty basic wall powered pimeta and my cans, beyerdynamic DT440s... ... and yet I can identify Hi-SP from PCM any day. Oh, and my cans tend to make all the problems in low-bitrate compression even more obvious.

All the great empires fell either by corruption from within or foreign migration.

It's cheaper yeah, but the RM-MC34LT sarks hard.

Couldn't agree more. However, I still agree with both Chris and dex; a nation as spiritually diverse as ours must have a government completely separated from the interests of the various religious sects. I believe in a less powerful central government; a minimalist government and a major restructuring of everything contained within said government. Simplify everything: taxes, retirement, etc. Occam's razor holds true in almost every situation ("Entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily.")

Why not just buy an NH700 and add an RM-MC33EL remote (45USD at audiocubes)? About the same price and you get a far superior remote.
-
Yes you can transfer audio files to the PC with any Sony Hi-MD unit. Note Hi-MD, not NetMD. The transfer software (SonicStage) is free and available from www.connect.com. No, the transfer is digital so there's no loss. However, SonicStage has the nasty habit of destroying tracks to be transferred to the PC, incidentally rendering them lost forever. Be careful before you transfer, and make backups if possible. The cheapest Hi-MD model with a Mic In would be the MZ-NH700. It sells for around 200USD, from what I've seen, although I don't think that the unit itself is marketed in the US...

D66 eggos are pretty good cans for an MD unit; they have the short cord to avoid looking like the space behind my stereo system. They have a rather nice sound and are quite efficient considering the size of the drivers and the relatively low output power of MD units. D66s would be good for casual listening, walking around and/or maybe easy bike riding. But I wouldn't recommend them for something active like snowboarding, at least if you did you might have to find a way to secure them better. I'd go with bhangra and say E2cs if you're going to be really active. I have a pair and I love them. I'd use them for my DS8 but, the four-conductor dealy on the auvi units messes with headphones that aren't four-conductor, and the cord's too long. XD Maybe if I had an ipod mini I'd be able to use them more...

The conversion definitely impaired them. Rip tracks from CDs in ATRAC3+ 256kbps directly to HDD and transfer those to MD. Don't rip to 132kbps.
