Tips for recording LOUD bands (SSs --> MZ-NH1)
mrsoul replied to emptyzero's topic in Live Recording
Speaking of the Line In. I tried out my NH900 at some outdoor shows on Thursday with mixed results. First, I am using an AT822 mic powered with 1 AA battery. This was an outdoor event on a closed street with the PA's on the ground below an elevated stage. The drums were blocked by the "lip" of the stage and the musician stage monitors were blocked some by the "lip" ( a concrete wall). So, most of the SPL was from the 2 PAs up front which were approx 15 feet apart. First show: Line In 30/30 with very good levels, much higher levels than I once I got with the same mic going Line In on my Sharp DR7. Is there a difference in the Sharp and Sony Line In power or signal (not sure what to call that)? Maybe it was the proximity to the PA's that helped. Just curious if there is a difference? I then uploaded via SS and converted to wav with Marcnet's HiMDrender. No problems found. I then used Cool Edit Pro to normalize and there was no need to amplify. Had very good levels. I was approx. 20 feet center on the 2 PA's. My only problem was the automatic tracking through the Line In. I was always able to turn this off using the Sharp, the Sony is another story. When the crowd was low between tunes, the Sony would make another track. I really want just one long track to split later using CD Wave Editor. In the Sony menu, I tried to set the Track setting to off but I think that is only for interval settings, not to turn it off altogether. Is this just the Sony method for Line In? Also, I should have set the mic to Bass Filter since I found the bass a little too much later but I just lowered the bass on my playback speakers without too much trouble. Main show: I went Mic In with AGC set to Loud Music and Low Sens. I found the AGC to work really well here but I did not like the extra noise I got from the Mic In preamp. A little too much noise for my taste considering how good the levels were on the Line In from the same location. My Sharp DR7 Mic In never gave me that much noise. Too bad there but I would probably only use Line In unless the levels go too low. During this 2nd set, I used Manual Recording levels and I couldn't tell much difference when listening between AGC and Manual. I was suprised with the performance of the AGC but the extra hiss was a minus. The Bass Filter was on for this show and the mix more even with the filter activated. I also used Hi-SP for this show. Could that have been the source of the extra noise?? I used PCM for the Line In opening set since I knew it was only going to be a 60 minute opener for that band. So, long story: Line IN with AT822 and the NH900 was very good except for the auto tracking issue. Any suggestions? Mic In with AGC performs very well but the extra noise limits my preference. Was the Hi-Sp responsible for that noise? I am also looking forward to my remote upgrade to arrive before my next show this Friday. It's just a pain in the arse to have to use a flashlight every time I want to look at the levels. I plan to use the auto backlight on the RM-MC40ELK during the shows. I wonder how much extra battery drain that will cause? -
It's sold. Thanks for looking. Paid for my new remote upgrade and new bigger Otterbox. Can't complain. Thanks again. Mark

Unfortunately, I don't think I can use a preamp with that AT822 (or at least one in my budget). I am waiting for Reactive Sounds to test their Boost Box with that mic but I have heard of some noise problems with that mic in that combo. When I did get clipping with the Sharp DR7 and that mic on the mic input it was probably more due to me pushing the levels more than anything since the clips were at the loudest moments and when I had a little drink and got greedy. I have learned some lessons the more I use it and my last show worked really good leaving the levels down on the mic input, the line input was too low to monitor (it was an outdoor show and the SPL were low). If there is an opening band next week, I may see what my line input levels show as a test but will probably stick with low sens on the mic input. Thanks again for the input. Mark

Thanks for the reply. I knew the SPL was around 125db but I wanted to know how I might be able to bypass the mic input and still have decent levels. Not that I have had bad results using my mic in on my Sharp DR7 and that mic in. I sometime get a little clip if the soundguy gets happy near the end of the show but I have learned to set the levels just a little low and get them higher once they are on the PC. Just thinking about options prior to my first show with my new NH900- Derek Trucks in Wilmington, NC on 10/29. I plan to use the mic in with the ACG setting on loud music and also play with the manual levels if they do 2 sets. If only 1 set, then I will probably stick with manual levels through the mic in on low sens. Thanks again for the info and reply. Mark

I have an AT822 single point mic that only runs on 1.5V AA battery in the mic. If I add a 9v battery box between the mic and the HI-MD mic input would that make any difference in the headroom? How about into the line input? I would have the battery in the AT822 in addition to the battery in the box. This would still be well below phantom power levels off a preamp but would it still boost the signal? Any ideas about this setup are appreciated. I can get a 9v battery box from Giant Squid for $60. Just thinking about some ideas. Mark

What about setting "Wave" as the recording selection and using that as the input on something like CD Wave or Cool Edit Pro? Will it still be the same problem or will that bypass the card? Sorry for asking such questions but seems like I might be able to learn something here :wacky: I have downloaded TR but I have yet to give it a try. Hopefully, tonight. Thanks for the help on the setup. I am interested in this primarily as a backup to marcnet's HiMD conversion tool, the analog line in, or the Sony WAV converter (yeah, right :-) Mark

I was wondering about this playback via USB. If I have a Creative Audio Audigy ZS 2 card and have WAVE as a recording option am I going through the soundcard if I try to record with something like Cool Edit Pro or the record "What you hear" function on the Creative Media Player? Do I still need Total Recorder to do this digitally without more transformation? It does sound "thin" when trying to record this way but I may not being doing something right. I have only made 1 attempt with the settings and recording, etc. Thanks for your response. Here's a link to my card and digital input/output board. http://us.creative.com/products/product.as...204&product=150

The good folks at Minidisc Australia replied back today. Looks like we have a winner folks! Now, I will be placing my order this week for the new remote.   Thanks for your input. Anybody take up the offer for the remote and the battery offer that was posted on the forum? That shop is selling on Ebay as well. Just curious but also a little wary. I think I may just go with Audiocubes even if they didn't have their info right. Mark ***************************************** Dear Mark, I tested the NH1 remote on the NH900 and it does show the recording levels! If I am not mistaken, that mic is a powered mic. You really want to avoid a preamp with powered mics cause you might get a lot of noise with that setup. I don't think that mic will run without a battery and I don't think it will run off the phantom power of a preamp. Your best bet is get something that has a mic in instead of line in OR get a mic and preamp combo (a mic that doesn't have a battery power source). Hope that helps some, I have been through a similar searches and had to learn the hard way. My AT822 has a battery source and I can't use it with a preamp so I usually go mic in with a very low mic level and low sens. Try Church Audio on Ebay or Reactive sounds for a good combo of mic and preamp. You might still be able to get rid of that Sony mic on Ebay or you could use a recorder that has a mic in connection. If anybody is interested, I did lower the BIN price down to $200. Mark

I did get a reply today on this forum from a gent in Chicago with the NH800 and that remote. He told me he tested it today after I asked and it works! Martin wrote this in his PM: *************************************** Hello !!!!! I really appreciate your interest, and let me tell you something, I was never interested in knowing if my remote shows recording levels, but I did what you asked me to do and : Big surprise. It does show recording levels for left and right. I hope it answers your question, it helped me too. greetings from Chicago. **************************************** I think I might just take the gamble and go with that answer. Anybody else have any feedback??? Thanks in advance. Mark

Take a look if you are interested. Sharp DR7 and Black Otter Box for sale: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=5725282496 Mark J.

I emailed Audio Cubes since they sell the "World Traveler" version that has the RM-MC40ELK remote with the NH900. Their response was that "no remote will be able to show recording levels". That seems weird since the same remote will for the NH1. I asked him to take another look today if possible. I have also emailed some folks in Australia with a similiar question. Any thoughts? :wacky: Mark

Thanks kurisu. I think I may spring for the purchase this week but I really want to give it a few more days to know the facts. Anybody own the Japanese version of the NH900? If so, could you test to if you can see recording levels on the remote during recording? I would very much appreciate your help. Thanks again to the forum for all the great info. Mark J.

I am interested in getting a RM-MC40ELK remote for my NH900. Mainly, I want to use the remote with the backlight on during recording of shows so I can watch the recording levels. The NH900 remote doesn't have recording levels. Anybody out there have any info about the functionality of the RM-MC40ELK remote on the NH900? Before I spend $80, I want to know if I will be able to see recording levels on the remote. I think I read that the Japanese version of the NH900 actually has the RM-MC40ELK remote, so I guess it should work with all functions. Any info is appreciated. Mark J.

http://www.shop4battery.com/ Check out these guys for a better replacement for that battery that came with the NH900. I just got my batteries (2 for $19.00 shipped) from this site along with my NH900 from etronics yesterday. It charged the replacements without any problem and its playing right now. I haven't recorded anything yet but I also use the extra battery pack with my Sharp DR7 when recording shows so I intend to do the same with my NH900. I will post later on my actual recording time with the 14WM replacement and the AA dry cell. Just thought I would post a site that came through for me. They also offer a gumstick charger that comes with 2 batteries. The package was shipped direct from Hong Kong so it might even be the same place as your Ebay order, StarCapt. Mark (who plans to post some other thoughts about my new NH900 once I get to know it a little better  )

Like new MXD-D400 For Sale on Ebay. Looking to go the Hi-MD route... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...me=STRK:MESE:IT Let me know if you have any questions. Also, may sell the DR7 (Blue) if anyone is interested... Now, if Sharp would only put out a Hi-MD, I wouldn't have to stress over selling that DR7 which has been such a champ to work with. Mark

Anybody with a new Hi-MD have any comments to post here about preamp noise? In particular, I have a Sharp DR7 and I am strongly considering a new Hi-MD to replace the DR7 at shows in combo with my AT822. I will probably use the line in for very loud shows and close approximation and the low level mic in for other medium to loud sources. Any comments are appreciated. My search on this forum for the subject didn't yield much. Thanks. Mark

After reviewing my manual and making the levels really high using manual setup configurations, I realized that the synchro levels are not too high afterall. I had never made the "Over" light up in red and realized the levels were not too high afterall. Sorry for the waste of bandwidth here. I guess if it sounds good, let it roll... Mark

Thought I would try here first... my new vacuum cleaner sucked up and destroyed the AC power adapter for my new Sony MZ-S1 Net MD. If anyone has an extra 3v adapter for the Sony MD's, drop me a line. Thanks for your help. Mark

I have a Sony MXD-D400 unit that I sometimes use to transfer CD to MD. I have noticed the recording levels are too high when I use the automatic transfers at normal speed OR 4x. When I just synch record from CD>MD, I can adjust the levels. Anybody figured out how to adjust the automatic transfer recording levels? Thanks for your help. Mark

 Don't get me wrong, the DR7 is the recording choice for me. But I wanted something to replace my old mp3 player when I went to the gym and ran. The S1 is a solid unit for that purpose and I have been nothing but impressed with Simple Burner 2.0 software speed and ease of use. The LP4 from that Net MD was my first encounter with that bitrate and it's really not that bad for workout tunes and sport earphones. I had never recorded anything in LP4 on any unit and I just decided to try it last night. It's tolerable for workout tunes. Is there any difference if you don't use Net MD as the source? (I guess that's another topic...) Anyway, the DR7 will remain my recording unit. I just didn't feel comfortable taking that to the gymAND using it to record shows. I also have the MDX-D400 unit for transfering to my PC. I just wanted something I could take on trips and around and the S1 at $79.99 is a steal for that unit. I am very happy with the purchase. Hope that clears up any confusion about my intents for the use of the S1 and the DR7. Mark

Oh Happy Day! I have been watching this one for a long time, had my gift certificates in hand for the $99.99 purchase on clearance and when I got the register, the price was $79.99! That's right folks, the Sony Net MD MZ-S1 sports model was only $79.99 at the Best Buy in Columbia, SC. Don't miss this opportunity if you are looking to get one, get there soon! Now, I won't stress when I take my Sharp DR7 on trips for listening and I can keep it safe for recording shows only. Just thought some of you might appreciate a heads-up about this find. See ya down the road. Mark J.

I got this card with the optical i/o daughtercard in Feb but I just got a great deal on the Creative Audigy2 Platinum. I am willing to let this go for $15 plus postage if anyone is interested. I have everything including the boxes, software and manuals. I DO NOT have the little Toslink cable that came with the daughtercard (my cat chewed it in half!). Here are a few links about this card for those interested. http://www.minidisc.org/part_Zoltrix_Night...Sound_Card.html http://www.zoltrix.com/products/audio/8SB8738.htm http://www.minidisc.org/zoltrix.html
