  1. i was going to post this in tech support but i'll try in this thread first... sonicstage 2.3 wont let me fill any disc, HI-MD or standard in HI-MD mode.. it crashes every time before it gets about 3/4 full the files were of all kinds of bitrates, normal song sized files at first i thought it was because i was transfering large amounts of data (albums) at a time, but even when i try one or just a few songs at a time it crashes my NH900 will just make this repeated clicking buzzing sequence, sonicstage will become unresponsive or eventually say "the following tracks could not be transfered" (without giving a reason and before the disc is even close to full). when it recovers, it says the disk is full when its not even close, and the las album to be transfered is not on the disc, though sonicstage shows its empty folder on the disc, and the NH900 itself doesn't even show the folder when it doesn't recover, sonicstage crashes, and the NH900 will be stuck in that writing sound i described... one sonicstage is closed ill unhook the USB... (using 'safely remove hardware' if it works) and the unit wont stop acting like its recording the only way to stop it is to take out the battery when the unit restarts, it says "Cannot record or play" ...... "write audio file?" whatever i choose, it formats the disc and all is lost right now, after just doing the "cannot read or write" thing, its "system file writing" on a 300meg disc, as it has been for the last 15 minutes since sonicstage crashed the first few discs i wrote i filled successfully, a 1gig disc and a couple 300meg discs......... but the last several 300 meg discs and 2 other 1gig discs all have this problem any ideas?
  2. can someone tell me how to use the alarm? i haven't seen it in the menus, and like i said its not in the manual
  3. thanks, i always wondered what SimpleBurner was for... its an aptly titled program but im looking for a way to get mp3s i already have on my computer to my HI-MD without creating oma/omg copies of the music on my harddrive currently soniocstage converts the music to atrac while transfering to the recorder, but also creates oma/omg files of the music in the sonic stage folder on my computer so now there are two occurences of the music on my harddrive, one is the original mp3 and one is the new atrac... its a waste of space i cant find anything in the options to change that i guess i could create a virtual cd of the image i want and rip that to the recorder with simpleburner (im assuming this would not also create copies on your HD) but thats a pain anyways i am glad i found out about simpleburner, it'll be very handy for CDs... its like a little vacation away from sonicstage
  4. thanks ksandbergfl can I use sonicstage to transfer (and convert) mp3s from my hard drive to a HIMD without it saving .omg files of the music on my hard drive as well?
  5. i have another 900 battery question... my 900 just arrived today and im charging the battery... at first it said "charging" and showed the charging battery animation thing.... then after just afew minutes it went blank when i disconnect and reconnect either power source (the cradle or the ac adapter directly into the 900), "charging" appears again.... only to go away after a short while is it charging or not?
  6. i searched for it with yahoo and google, and it looks like it has to do with directx graphics, not audio the matches were for part of the game console read-outs (i dont know how to describe it) pasted on teh net for trouble shooting, like: "im installing everquest and i have a problem... heres what it says: *bunch of programming jibberish* .....OMG Seamless,0x00200000,1,1,Seamless.ax,9.00.0000.0000.... *lots more programming jibberish* " looks like your adobe audition is trying to use a directx graphics plugin by accident... that might explain the mysterious lack of parameters to control in the effect's window as well
  7. would it be practical to carry a copy of SS around on a HI-MD that you can install on others' computers to facilitate listening to the disc through USB? i have no idea how much setting-up effort it would take to get to the point of just listening to the disc, as ive never used SS
  8. i believe someone in the "Live Recording" board said that through experimentation he found 12 to be "unity gain" (signal goes out same as it goes in) which i think is what youre looking for
  9. if it is in fact the case that HI-MD cases are significantly larger than old MD cases, im surprised i haven't heard it complained about here before that would be very annoying indeed...

  11. thanks guys, i got the TDK discs i was thinking about getting better earbuds, the senn mx 500 are dirt cheap... only annoyance is that their cord is a meter long, and that will be tagged onto the NH900's remote cord but i wont get better earphones right now anyway, because i plan to get Sure in-ear monitors in the near future, so i'll just wait for those "in the studio" i use Senn HD-280s .... ive tried grados, which sound clearer, i think because of their open design, but sometimes you gotta have sealed headphones maybe the earbuds from my panasonic cd player will be better than the 900's, who knows... at least their cord is the right length
  12. First of all thanks to everyone whos made this forum such a very helpful place... Ive been poking around here since last spring, and now I feel pretty good about how Im going to spend my money (which would not be the case if I relied on a retail salesperson for info... but i digress) I post before you today to settle some last minute concerns before placing my order with www.minidisc-canada.com Im going to buy a MZ-NH900, Sound Pro SP-TFB-2 microphones, and Sony's NH-14WM battery.... to use for recording environmental sounds as well as jamming w/ friends and at school (Im a music major) using line-in sources from mixers or mic pre-amps And also for daily music-listening First of all I'll need to buy some blank mini-discs... I figure having a lot of (multi-coloured) 80-minute discs would be preferable for recording because it would keep me more organized, 2:20 of Hi-SP will be sufficient for most applications, and for the times I want to record long PCM sets I can just use a Hi-MD disc But looking at the selection of blank discs on Minidisc Canada, I realized I have no idea what to look for. Are some brands better for recording than others? Ive heard to avoid Maxell (or was it Memorex?) which is no problem because I dont like the design of their discs anyway. I like the TDK 80-minute Color Mix Music Jack MiniDiscs... 5 different nice colours, without fish, kittens or girls on roller-skates But some clear discs on MDC's site claim to offer 'superior' sound quality becuase they're clear... bullshit or true? And then there are HBB "Professional" 80 minute discs, which claim to offer "Block error rates 10 times lower than consumer discs" ....what does that mean to me? They also claim to have more reliable mechanical parts (but alas, they're all the same colour) Here is MDC's selection of 80-minute discs: http://www.minidisc-canada.com/shopdisplay...0+min+MiniDiscs Also Im just curious about a few other little things: How much of a difference does the NH-14WM make over the NH-10WM? Can I assume it'll have about 40% more life? Will the NH900 come with ear-buds or headphones? Ive seen pictures of both And will the front plate on the NH900 be black or the grey/green we've seen in some pics? like I said, these are last-minute questions... Im going to order today or tomorrow, so if you could help me out sooner rather than later I'd appreciate it (though none of these are extremely important issues, obviously) Thanks everyone.... I cant wait to start recording
  13. http://www.minidisc.org/part_Hi-MD_Sony.html
  14. unbelievable... You could still play it back over USB and capture it digitally in realtime though, right? i cant believe they delete YOUR recorded material! that has to be one of the best examples of Sony's ridiculous attitude towards their customers
  15. lol that was funny about soundforge.... yeah it would be awsome to have it integrate with HI-MD HI-MD could be taken far more seriously as a recording medium if it integrated with a professional sound editor it would also be cool if the HI-MD players could use sony's perfect clarity audio (.pca) lossless compression format that soundforge can render
  16. does the NH1s remote give you any additional control over the 900's? or is it just the convenience of a bigger screen, jog dial, recording meters etc.. i think im going to get a 900 soon, recently prices have come down and i started to consider an NH1, but even if i wanted to spend the money, the limited battery and limited controls on the player itself are significant limitations compared to the 900 the only pluses i see are the date-time stamp function, which i really want for recording, and the smaller size and very sleek magnesium body even without the difference in price, the battery issue almost makes up for those advantages if youre into field recording another question: are all the north american NH900s silver with a black plate on the front? some pictures on the net show a greenish plate thanks
  17. sorry this is off-topic, but you mentioned recording a mono track.... i thought this was not possible with HI-MD? what modes can you record in mono and does it give you extra record time like the old MDs?
  18. Can you still use Sony's .wav converter on that file? Sorry i dont understand... are you saying if I upload a track to my PC without deleting the original on the MD, and then I erase the copy on the PC and try to upload it again, this time the track will be deleted from the MD without transfering?
  19. man this sucks..... is it as loud as a floppy drive??

    Mznh1-sound

thanks for explaining all that i guess youre right, attenuation is specifically destructive to the signal... but yeah i meant distortion and sound quality btw im going to go ahead and get those sound professional mics i was asking you about before thanks for all the advice

    Mznh1-sound

Ive heard of that rule before and it makes sense, but ive always been curious about one thing.... maybe you can help me out: is there any tradeoff in attenuating lots of different frequency bands (to give one frequency a relative 'boost') vs using gain on that one band and leaving the others unaffected? I mean if attenuation affects a big enough range of frequencies can it become worse than adding gain to a small range? or is attenuation in eq's pretty much non-destructive to sound quality? edit: btw i mean for producing/studio applications
  22. Just out of curiosity how does VirtualPC for macs perform with minidiscs and HI-MD?
  23. can you recommend a good pair of in-ear binaural microphones? for environmental sampling... i want the in-ear ones because they're discreet and stereo how much would i have to spend to get a good sounding pair? im skeptical because of the very small size...
