NEW: Sony Hi-MD Walkman Players - MZ-EH70 and MZ-EH50
mmilovan replied to betamaxDATminidisc's topic in News
I'm not so enthusiastic about these units have no mp3 support (it's not so wise decission, SONY), but after a week or so depression I'm happy again! At least we can hope that other manufacturers of blank media will produce their HiMD. -
If anyone from SONY ever spent his time reading to our disscussions, I believe, MD and HiMD format will last much longer...
-
What about (new) transparent blue HiMD discs - are they available anywhere?
-
Well, I know, but my intention was to describe how he was depressed looking at that Betmax unit.

About a week or so, very good friend of mine, film critic and publicist invited me to his home. He asked me if I can help him with connection of Betamax SONY video recorder he borrowed to transfer bunch of cassettes to VHS video. He pointed his view (with some sort of strange sadness in his eyes) to robust, perfectly made and designed unit. "It was perfect machine, then... no one seek for crappy, lossy VHS format, but for Beta"- he told me. Now, knowing all those facts about slow killing MD and HiMD units, the ONLY units in the world with acceptable price that can record true PCM linear, I've looked at my MZ NH700 unit on my desk table. Strange, it was the same sort of sadness that I've noticed a week ago. This time melted with sadness and MAD, MAD feelings in my soul. Don’t know what to say… It’s a kind of a betrayal to their loyal customers... again... SONY... again...

I must admit, I'm very dissapointed with Sennheiser MX550 (I try to get the best from their production line of earbuds, but with no luck), and not for the design itself, but for very boomy, colorated and unacceptable sound! If you are serious about listening via portable devices, and serious about quality of the sound, try to avoid this pair of very expensive (for the value it delievers) still poor, poor headphones.

No way to dismiss my Sony HiMD (I own it, and I'm satisfy with it), but recording 24/96 on flash drive, with mic preamp, phanthom power, no DRM restrictions... well that sounds quite interesting! But, still waiting for pricelist...
-
OK...

It's Athlon 1.2 GHz, 384 MB, Quantum AS 7200 rpm, Chaintech MB VIA based, than Win XP, and I must say I'm not happy for all those bugs connected with this potentioaly perfect SONY's device. To my eyes, theirs products always were connected with quality...
-
Perfect! Now we know that new SS 3 is capable of trashing recordings. Again... A little bit too much, I'm afraid...
-
I can hope, if there is mistake in hardware, it would be fair to offer correction.
-
Many thanks you beautiful people...

Now, I am confused, because there is 1.55V on those mic connector... and "+" is connceted to the ground of the connector... Don't know what to do...

Unfortunately, this model of mine are not decoupled, what I discovered by open it. There is only mic electret capsule connected to small battery, cable cord and nothing else. Really don't know if condenser exist in big mono jack of original mic. Is there a way to discover condenser in this mic system? So it is the main reason why I asked this question, no capacitor in my mic clip-on unit I can trace with my limited electrical knowledge. Still, did SONY constructed some system to prevent damage? Big thanks for all yours answers. Milan

So, line-in and mic-in inputs on our HiMD have capacitor right after theirs jacks, right - did I understand it correctly?

Connection of electret , battery powered capsules to HiMD....? Just got from old friend of mine some electret clip-on microphones, these are old, almost vintage mics marked only "ECM 1025, Japan, AO1 (or AOI), impedance 600 Ohm" in metal shield. They are battery powered, with one cell battery LR44W (1.55 V) for each capsule. So, my question is, can I connect these mics to mic-in of my HiMD - I've noticed that metal case from each capsule is connected to "+" battery source, as well as ground of 3.5 jack? Is it safe? Is there some kind of protection, condenser or something in front of mic-in preamp unit of my HiMD? Many thanks.
-
? Didn't know that.... but what about skipped frames or entire recording if recorder is not placed secure and still... I've read about this in our forum.
-
Here is Q some of us would like to know: - will new unit have kind of built-in protection buffer (something like G-protection while playback) for recording?
-
BTW, someone knows is there limitation voltage for electret microphone capsules (I already made battery box and modification of capsule according to this scheme http://www.linkwitzlab.com/sys_test.htm) - is there a rule: "more power from battery means less distorsion" or something like that, or you must go straight as voltage written in technical data sheets? Thanks.
-
Well, I already made battery box and modification capsule according to this scheme http://www.linkwitzlab.com/sys_test.htm - so 1,5 V wasn't energy power in my case. Today I tried recording with normal sensivity dialed at HiMD recorder, and found only few distorsion problems with very close miking of very loud voices, so this could be the solution of annoying problem. Thanks dex Otaku and to all of you! BTW, anyone knows what is the input impedance of mic preamp in HiMD unit? (usefull data for lbuilding mic according to linkwitz schematic diagram)

Many thanks to all of you. May I ask another question: I’ve tried to figure where distortion actually was generated from by observing in Sound Forge sound clip I recorded. My recording has been taken by using “high sensivity mic” mode. I’ve noticed clipped frames no matter what recording level was adjusted by the main button (manual level recording) in the center of jog dial, only the overall volume is lower, but clipping exists. So, I figured that whole mechanism of changing levels (from 0-30) is placed AFTER mic preamp (and not before). So mic amp can clip - no matter what is shown on display, and what level from 0 till 30 is tuned – isn’t it so? If microphone capsule is not overloaded by high SPL, I can think that source signal from electret mic must be attenuated before MD and I must use low sensivity mode not to put preamp in clipping position - am I right on this one?
-
So, it's not connected with preamp sensivity and pressure levels, right? Is there any noticable affectation on sound of music by adding this Low Sens filter?
-
Hello people, I'm relatively new in all this thing, and just wanted to know what exactly Mic Sens meny means. I used to record some live club dates with famous Panasonic modified capsule and battery box I made by myself according to various plans and still have a bit distorsion at louder shouts for example. Should I try with low Mic Sens mode? What are those settings? Thanks.

Is this price tag for Mayah recorder? I think I saw somewhere on the web that device with price listed above 1K. Now, Edirol... I think it's around 450 EUR or so...
-
Absolutely... I can understand every word you've said... Can you imagine what popularity should "allow mp3, allow faster than realtime with no aditional software, allow acting as reasonably fast removable storage device" inject into HiMD format, and Sony's products as well?
