  1. Wow - Why on earth are they that cheap. A related question: In another thread someone mentioned Earthworks SRO mics... Anyone have experience with these? THey look like the bees-knees; obviously alot more spendy but I'm wondering what you gain from something like those...
  2. I won't use it. 80min discs are, what?, $1.50? $2? All my stuff is in SP. SOme of my tunes were ripped at 132artac and then a few new albums I did at 292 artac+ - when listening back on my gig MD I reached one of those albums and was astonished at the differenence.
  3. A second transfer is WAY faster - WAY. (dig your avatar, campekenobi)
  4. I'd love to hear that recording - gratz to you! Can I ask what those SROs ran you? I'm looking into aditional mic'ing options and those look very nice; just the spl handling itself makes me grin. Cheers!
  5. mgdimo - little delayed response here... For a couple years I've been using an MZN707 with pretty good results, with the exception of loud music recordings. (with some exceptions. This is an example of a VERY QUICK - ala plug in mic, press record, set recorder down in the side of the room with all default settings, including AGC running. Not sure why it turned out as good as it did - it's muddy but suprised me still - You can hear the AGC kick in every once in a while but it isn't nearly as bad as it normally sounds when using AGC for music.... check it out - http://www.kl5.us/musicbin/WithInterest_jam.mp3 ) I just got my MZNH1 back and will have a chance to try it out in a rehearsal setting for the first time tonight. So far it's been everything I'd hoped the N707 would be when I got it.... my only concern is not having a backup battery source, but then the player is even LIGHTER than the N707 and the rechargeable in the NH1 lasts a very long time and recharges very quickly (about an hour for a full charge). I'm using just a Sony ECM-DS70P stereo condensor. I've been looking at those Auris mics for a couple weeks now and am thinking I'll give myself an X-Mas present of those and the Boost-Box sooner than later for all the added clarity and headroom I'm sure they'll give me. I picked up the attenuator as I mentioned and it works great with my N707 last week. Had I bothered to turn off the AGC I'm sure that rehearsal would have sounded great. Playing with this setup I'm getting closer and closer to the easiest portable, and awesome sounding recording I can dream of. Cheers to you guys/gals posting here - this place has a been a great help!
  6. Hmmm... Looks like mgdimo never came back. And this story was sounding so much like my own. Curious to hear how it all turned out....
  7. Yeah - I think you're probably right.. The novelty of it must have washed away my reasoning skills. Really, my ONLY problem with the N707 was the clipping problem at high volumes and your fix seems to have beat that for me too. I recorded a (quite loud) rehearsal last night but didn't bother to set the level manually - I've just become so used to it not sounding that great that I don't bother with it much... I wish I HAD bothered because it WOULD have sounded great. It sound mediocre as is but only because of the irritating, dynamic-killing auto-leveling that I didn't switch off. My NH1 hasn't arrived yet, but all of this movement forward in the medium (uploads, .wav conversion, etc.) has made me dust off the N707 while I wait for the new unit to arrive.. not that I'd stopped using it altogether but it certainly has seen it's time on my desk shelf. I'm still considering picking up the Auris ST and Boost box from reactive but would like an idea how MUCH better that 300 and change will make my hi-SPL recordings sound.. the headroom will be very significant?
  8. Also (on a related note because I'm looking for the least possible hassle for high SPL recordings) has anyone used the PS-PSM-5 (lil Altoid box mic) from Sound Professionals? Found here http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/...d/item/SP-PSM-5
  9. Browsing all around the forums in regard to live recording; there was a thread that made frequent mention about the poor mic preamp in the N707 (my old unit - and this explained to me quite clearly teh problems I'd been having with hi-volume recordings). Can anyone tell me if the preamp in the NH1 is any better/worse or has it changed at all? Cheers. note to A440: your radio shack earphone volume attenuator trick works like a CHARM! *thumbsup*
  10. What a deranged and masochistic bunch we have here (myself included)... Teetering on the edge of killer music technology - peering just over the horizon at "what could be", for years and years.... I don't get it. Sony, I don't understand. Evidentally I'm not supposed to.
  11. (just found these forums a couple days ago - great community, y'all.) I'm looking forward to the future; a kinder, gentler Sony.
  12. http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t...reactive+sounds That thread answered all my questions and MORE. You guys rule!
  13. Can anyone tell me how these mics deal with very loud volumes, i.e. rock band rehearsals. I'm looking for something that will give me a nice recording in that kind of setting, essentially for simply recording live jams that too easily get lost to the wind, but I'd love them to sound decent enough to post on our website etc... We have a recording setup but I just want something easy to use with my MD that I can just plug in and go with. I've been using the Sony ECM DS70P and it sounds excellant (considering the price) for acoustic work and field recordings lectures etc. But for our higher volume jams the mic just doesn't seem to be able to handle it. Any help is perfect. Cheers - Y'all - Nice community you have here. Glad I stumbled in.
