My brother has a sony mz-r700, but the headphone socket (I think) is playing up. There will be no sound, but if you wiggle the jack, it'll work, then it'll go off again etc I thionk this may be a common problem because my friend also had one and the same thing happened. I assume therefore that this has already been dealt with, but I cant find it. Thanks for any help! Edit(p.s. he dosent have the remote - he got the player cheap a few years ago from a catalogue clearence place)

avland.co.uk has them to order, but it doesn't say whether they're in stock or not. As for official date, no news yet....

I am choosing lp2 on the basis of backwards compatability with my sj-mj50. When that dies or is replaced (by a hi-md player hopefully!) then I would think I would switch to hi-sp. Lp2 beats sp at the moment because of ease of use (fast via pc and with track names) and space (can get a 2cd on 1 disc). I put those 2 above the barely noticable (to me) decrease in quality.

So by using the cheap earphones, you save money and your music sounds better!!

I believe, that since the lp2 codec has been updated over time (or at least has been reported to have been!), it does essentially (but not totally) come down to bitrate. If you were comparing the lp2 codec when it first emerged, this may be different, having said that, this means you may expect hi-lp to get better over time! All in all, I'd say that lp2 is better, but hi-lp is by no means unuseable. In fact I'd say hi-lp is comparable to mp3 128kbs, lp2 comparable to mp3 160-192kbps. However Im sure that many will dissagree wholeheartedly (feel free to do so - I'd love to hear other opinions)!

It is re-badged nh600 by the looks of the outside, im not sure how this would lead to mac support??

Sounds promising! But I wont hold my breath just yet....

I have looked again - it's the record itself - I tried another one and that sounded ok, so I'll try giving it a clean and see what happens. I just assumed it was somthing that I was doing wrong, just goes to show.... Thanks again for your help.

Is a metal case THAT important? If I had the choice between metal and plastic, where the plastic was cheaper, I'd go with plastic. Of course I don't want somthing that will break upon touching it, but I feel that there is a happy medium of a strong plastic case. Having said that it is yet to be seen if sony have found this with the 2nd generation, here's hoping!

Thanks! I'd missed the obviouos (using the headphones) and found the link useful - I will have a play with the level setting on the nh900.Thanks again!

I was wandering more about the connections, but you pretty much said what I was expecting. Thanks. The problem with the speakers is that they are replacement £30 types from richersounds - not particularly audiophile. This means that I can't tell for sure, but I think it is similar if not as bad. Thanks agan!

I dont see that not having winamp is a problem. For vbr vs cbr, it only says it is only guaranteed for cbr, so a few of yours may indeed fail. As for joint stereo, I dont even know what that means, but I'd guess that it is a trivial difference. As far as I know you are safe to zap the optimised files, as long as you wait till the end. Good luck!

Ok, please bear with me as i'm not too experienced at this sort of thing (I have done a quick search of the site but found nothing). I am planning to try and put all my dad's vinyls to pc, so from there they can go back to minidisc or cd etc. I have a nh900 to record in pcm, and an old sony seperates system. The seperates system has a tape deck, and on the amplifier there is a phono out for the tape player to record from. I unplugged the tape and connected the nh900. I then played and recorded the 1st album (from the biginning - A for Allman brothers!). The sound is the problem - all the instuments sound fine (or as good as I was expecting) but the voices crackle/sound very scratchy when they appear at medium to loud volumes (i.e. normal singing!) I havent yet tried any other records or even asked my dad if the needle needs changing etc ( I am very young- 20- and have no experience with vinyl! ha!). However I was wandering if I was doing anything fundamentally wrong, or if there was anything that would make my life easier! Thanks

No! It converts them as you transfer them and stores the .oma files in a folder called "optimised files" in the folder where you tell it to put importes cd's (does that make sense?) As for your specific mp3's, just try it! Put a few duplicate ones in a folder and just import that folder and see what happens. Sonicstage is bad but it wont go around erasing your music collection willy nilly! My method so far has been to only import (into the library) the files I want to move to disc, move them to disc, them erase them from the library. Hope that helps, and I am beginning to believe that the "nh900 team" can get through anything!

I put vesion 3 on my pc a few weeks before I got my nh900, and all seems well. I has not done anything wrong (eg bad discs/crashes), but it is still troubled by the restrictions applied in the first place: Can't move songs done in simple burner back to pc via sonicstage Fairly slow and ungainly peice of software etc ah well, the benefits far outweigh the negatives!

the link in this topic seems very helpful! http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=9436 - see the 2nd post.

Unbeatable.co.uk have the nh600 for £58 icluding p&p for anyone who wants a intro to hi-md. Still a great bargain! I have had my nh900 on all day (literally, 10 am till now 11pm) and it is still going!! All on the 1st charge of the gumstick battery. I have got most of the lynyrd skynyrd albums on it, in shuffle, going over and over - quality! I have turned it off twice only for a few minutes each time - this player is getting better all the time!

Very cool pictures ! Thanks.

Many people do use there md's for recording where PCM is exactly what they require, however, you are correct in saying that it is overkill for playback. It would be interesting to see the new playback only hi-mds (japan only I believe) and see if they play back PCM. Perhaps someone could help us out (or even direct us to a manual). Wow!!! Thats dedication! I used to moan about copying down the songs to the sticky labels.

well, I see lp2 is in the lead! I put the options in the order I thought people would vote. Looks like I got it wrong. Although this is far from conclusive it supports the case for a hi-mp (meduim play) codec eg 160kbps atrac3+. Perhaps then the low codecs (48kbps, lp4 and lp3) could then be dropped. I have looked at what dex otaku said, and for me I think evn hi-lp is suitable through speakers (nh900>nad seperate>speakers) and on a few 1gb discs i would have a great jukebox! This leaves lp2 on most of my discs - for travelling and using my beautiful panasonic sj-mj50, yes I know the battery compartment is being held on by elastic (see picture) but it has a great battery life and it's tiny! Yes, but an experienced user's opinion - just what us newbie hi-md users need!
-
What phones do you use (top notch ones or just £20-£30 ones)? I can't tell the difference between sp and lp2 unless I really sit down and concentrate hard (although this is probably a result of too many machine head gigs than cheap headphones! ) using any of my £20-£30 headphones. If it really is the phones that make the difference all I ask is that you split the money that you save on cheaper phones and less minidisc with me. ha!
-
I think whichever method you choose, with 500 md's it may take some time . I am listening to lp2 at the moment, I think it has the edge since it will work with my panasonic sj-mj50 which has about 100 hours battery life. I think that "team nh900" will eventually rule the world!

don't worry, I didnt buy them all myself - every birthday and xmas my nan tends to get me 10 and since i've had an md for 5 years, thats 100 from her! I spend my money on buying the cd's to fill them all with! ha
