  1. I only use my RH910 for recording. I've got a rio karma to take care of my portable player needs I think the only way I'd buy a next gen HIMD unit is if they came out with some 2gb or greater discs. 3 hours of PCM recording would be rockin.
  2. Thanks for the replies After getting the runaround a few times on the phone today, I got the answer as to why the price quote changed. $29 was the exchange fee... they'd exchange my broken player with a refurb. Thats fine with me. Mine was in great condition, but I figured I could buff out any scratches or whatever on the new one. Well, it turns out they dont have any refurb models instock right now, so they went ahead and decided they'd fix it instead (for a cost of 77 dollars). A few people on Sony's main tech support line were no help in getting me to tell them I didnt want that option. So, I called straight into the laredo facility and talked to the guy who has been handling my player personally. He told me how they were out of refurbs. Since they were out and they quoted me $29, he'd go ahead and fix mine for that cost of $29... an idea I was quite happy with. So thats where its at. They're working on it now. It took a little while and a bit of time on the phone and some frusteration, but it looks like everything will be ok. I'm pleased until I post otherwise
  3. Sorry to bump an old topic, but I figured it would be better than starting a new one... So here's the latest on my broken MD unit. I called up Sony, they saw my unit was still under warranty and told me it would be a flat $29 to repair it. So, I sent in my RH910 with a check for $29. I got the word they recieved the unit and I authorized the $29 fee that they asked for (I told them to cash the check and they did). For the past week, my repair status online has said that the recorder is with a technician. Great.. I couldnt wait to get it back! Well, today, my new status is: The estimate of $77 for the sony product you have inquired about is waiting apporval for the repair What is this?? It's too late to call them now, so I figured I'd ask you all. Why on earth are they asking for $77 now? The player is under warranty (I provided reciepts to prove it). I thought $29 was a bit much to fix something that is still under its warranty, but I didnt mind that. $77 I did mind. Anyone know what the deal is? Are sony's warranties usually BS?
  4. Thanks a load for the info Amazingly, the unit has never been droped or abused one bit... I've kept it almost exclusively in my soft padded gear bag. Like I said, it was a total surprise when I took it out yesterday and found things not working right. Thanks again for the info- I really apreciate it.
  5. Thanks for the link. I went ahead and looked inside and noticed a little piece hanging down and this seems to be the part that is making it hard to put discs in. Here are two picture of what i'm talking about (the piece hanging down is circled): Is that out of the ordinary?
  6. So here's the deal... Bought my RH910 right as they were made avaliable early last year. I've recorded a few shows with it and have had very nice results. I always keep it in a padded gear bag and it's in pristine condition. So, today I take it out for the first time since early August. I want to record a guitar jam and the with my hi-md disc inside, I press the play button to turn the unit on. I have to wait a long time (10 seconds... it was never this long before) for the disc to be noticed and once I hit play to see whats on the disc, I hear a high pitched whirring noise coming from the player every 2 seconds or so. Not cool. I popped the disc out and put it back in and this time the screen said "read error". Yikes! I tried an old standard MD disc and the unit didnt read it at all. The disc was a little sticky going in... something is up. I'm not sure what the hell happened because the unit has just been sitting un touched and un moved for a few months now. What's my best bet? Am I still under warranty?
  7. I had this exact same problem (in ss 3.1) I recorded a 3 hour show and then proceded to chop it up and make track marks so i could listen to it before i got home from the trip. Huge mistake. When I went to upload- I got the same error you got. I freaked... had problems fully unistalling SS... blah blah blah. Long story short- I reformatted and installed SS fresh and still had the errors. It was the disc that was messing everything up (and aparently messing with cutting it into tracks on the unit was to blame). Just 2 weeks ago, I recorded 2 shows with the very same disc and didnt run into a single problem uploading. I kept both shows as one long track and they uploaded perfectly. I learned my lesson... no messing around with track markers on the unit. Leave it alone, upload it and then cut and trim till your heart's content. edit: be glad you're on ss3.2 and can try uploading more than once. When I had all my issues, I ended up permanetnly losing quite a bit of my recording. I damn near threw the unit out the window.
  8. I picked up an Rh910 right as they were released back in April. I used my old R37 and R90s primairly for concert recording, so the idea of the added storage of Hi-Md really apealed to me (and the new mp3 support was just a nice bonus). Well, as some of my previous posts will show- my first concert recording was dreadful. The actual taping was fine and the sound quality was excellent... my troubles all occured when it came to uploading the show. Previous to uploading, I had listened to the whole show and split it into proper tracks. When I went to upload, just about every track gave me an error and I was only able to upload half the show and alot of those songs were missing parts. It was a disaster (especially when I tried to upload again and ended up permanently deleting songs... yikes). Well, After reading more and more on here, I learned that you shouldnt split up tracks on the unit (something I had only done for convienence until I was able to upload). So, tonight I just recorded a show and I left the one long track alone. Got home, hooked up the Md to the pc and the transfer went flawlessly. The entire 2 hour file was transfered without a single hiccup. Transfered it to .wav and all was perfect. SonicStage 3.2 gave me the courage to give this all one more shot and this board gave me the knowledge to make sure I didnt mess anything up myself. No real point to this thread other than HI-MD rocks and I can't wait to use the unit again this coming Saturday
  9. Yeah, you don't have to use the remote.
  10. I've been using mindiscs for a while (an old sharp 722 unit, R37, R90... seems like I've had everything). I thought switching over to Hi Md would be a total joy. But.... My first venture into hi md recording was an absolute disaster. I had about 4 hours of material recorded in hi-sp and even after breaking it up into several tracks, I still got errors during upload. I finally had to resort to the old line in of my audio card 1x transfer. Blah. General consensus seems to be that I just had a crummy disc. Who knows. Is that common? Anyways, I'm willing to give this all another shot, but I want to do it right. I'll be using Hi-Sp (not changing discs is too nice) and I'll be starting over with a brand new Hi Md disc. Line in with my cardiods and power supply. What can I do to help my chances of having a successfull upload of my recorded tracks? Should I turn on auto track marks to make for smaller pieces when uploading? Absolutely any ideas would be very welcomed. Thanks
  11. I was having this exact same problem when I tried to reinstall SS. I'm running Win2k service pack 4. I ended up giving up and I just reformatted and reinstalled windows (I needed to anyways). After that, it worked. After all the shit I've gone through with SS, I definitely regret upgrading to HIMD. I was better off with my old R37
  12. Thats what I'm thinking. How crummy. First ever recording on the disc and it's unsuccessful. Definitely a bummer
  13. Well, luck still isnt on my side. I got the same error at the exact same time, so I broke things up into tracks. That worked ok, however when playing all tracks together, there is a slight clip at each track mark (grrrrr). When I went to transfer the main act of my recording (which I also cut into tracks), the first few songs transfered fine, but then things got bad. Some of the songs started skipping and parts of songs were missing (what the hell). When I got to the 8th track on the recording, I got the same old error message again. All in all- even on a fresh, brand spanking new install of WIN2k- Sonicstage is an absolute turd!!!! I figured things might be getting messed up due to a low battery in the player, so I charged it up and I'm going to try doing this again. Worse case scenario- I'll be transfering at 1x via my m audio card. I thought I was done with that when I jumped up to HI MD. Guess not (nice avatar by the way )
  14. How weird! Sounds like we're in the exact same situation. My recording is in HI-SP as well. I'm just going to reformat tonight. It's been a long time coming and I figure this gives me the motivation to finally do it. I backed up everything I need on dvd so I'll just wipe it all clean and hope a fresh install helps.
  15. gah... my mistake I'd imagine that my inability to reinstall has to do with the problem I had with uninstalling. I've gotten rid of everything sony related on my machine. This is terribly frusterating. I just need to find out how to wipe away every remnant of this piece of crap.
  16. thanks for the input! Here's something odd. I went to go and do a complete uninstall and fresh reinstall of SS3. SS3 appeared in my add remove programs list, but clicking uninstall did nothing. So, I popped in my SS3 disc and just tried to do a reinstall. Everything worked fine till it got to the actual installing of Sonic Stage. The progress bar for the sonic stage part of the install hit 100% and then the installer just quit. It gave me a message saying the install was terminated. Not cool. I've tried just about everything from downloading SS3.1 to redownloading SS3 and trying to install again. Nothing is working. Any sugestions? edit: screenshots: Everything is going fine... the sonicstage bar reaches 100% and right after that I get:
  17. Ok, here's the deal... just got home from a show and i went to upload my recording. I split the recording into 2 tracks- the opening act (1 hour 50 minute) and the main show (quite a bit longer than that). I went to upload via sonicstage. I selected the first track and it went ahead and began uploading. After a few minutes, I get the following error: So, i tried to convert the shortened oma file that this fubar upload gave me (it was only like 90mb) and I couldnt. Weird thing is that I tried to upload this file again and it let me! The disc said it had been transfered, but I was able to transfer it again- only to get the same error again. Anyone know how to fix this? I'm terrified to try uploading the main show ... I dont want to mess this up.

    Rh710 Vs. Dh710

    Here's the DH710 http://datavis.com/webapp/commerce/command...00&Tmstmp=67498

    Sony Mz-nh600d

The 600D doesnt have a line in. The 600 does If you have a mic and you wish to record via line in- you'll need a powersupply for the mic.
  20. The only reason I'd buy the RH10 is if I wanted to use it as a primary mp3 player. The non backlit display of the 910 just doesnt cut it for my playing needs. But for recording shows, the 910 is just fine- hit record, make sure its recording and leave it in my pocket. The oled display would be nice I guess, but hardly necessary for my needs and therefore, not worth the extra cost.
  21. I've got the 910 and its damn near gapless... there is a slight hiccup (just enough to be noticible), but there's no gap where you're waiting for the song to load. Not completely gapless like a Rio Karma, but its as close to gapless as you can get.
  22. I dont have a scanner, but I managed to take a photo of the RH910's spec sheet:

    3rd Gen

Yeah, FLAC is very battery friendly. OGG however isn't. But, if the 3rd gen incorporated Ogg support, I could definitely see using an md as my primary music player instead of my Karma.
  24. Thats attractive almost makes me second guess the 910 I just ordered
