Not Enough Live Recordings In Gallery/archive..
Keith replied to Christopher's topic in Live Recording
I'm having problems with this. I was hoping to add some files but when I click on New Album, nothing happens. Is it just me? Am I missing something? -
Nothing really. I'm easing myself back into work after a long illness. On the days that I'm not at work, I can spend as much time here as I like. The missus is getting a bit fed up with it though. Keith

I take it you've looked at UK suppliers like discountdiscs.co.uk? No idea what they'd charge for delivery outside UK though. Keith

Wow- praise from The Low Volta. I must be learning! Keith

The answers to your questions are mostly in the HIMD FAQs or other threads: 1. There's some info here. And I'm sure you'll find more from a quick search. 2. You can use the rh910 to play mp3s. I don't - but I believe you have to convert thru Sonic Stage and there are problems with quality - see this thread. 3. Yes but it's not drag and drop. See the very thorough explanation here. Search around if these don't answer all your questions. Most of the answers are here somewhere. Keith

Yeah but I quit smoking overnight - no relapse in 6 years. And my use is a lot less complicated than yours. I sometimes make CDs of my recordings for friends but that's about it. Keith

I think you'll find tha Puccini wrote Tosca. Good work though. Keith

Yeah I like the idea that no decision can be wrong. If I change my mind later, I can just convert to something else. All it will cost is time to convert the files. Thanks again. Keith

Assuming you have ripped the CDs using Sonic Stage, the only way you can move the files is by using the SS backup library and restore functions - see this thread. An alternative would be to to rip the files to wav then import into SS when you get home. Keith

Thanks for all the info and especially the link from bug80. I decided to use dBpowerAmp to convert wav to flac as recommended somewhere in another thread. Nice and simple. I can then copy files to CD for storage. Many thanks. Keith

I'm thinking of archiving recordings and possibly CDs in a lossless format. Looking around on Google, I've found several comparison charts which seem to show that Monkey's Audio produces smaller files than FLAC in comparable times. There are a lot of FLAC enthusiasts here so my question is - why did you choose FLAC over Monkey's Audio or any other lossless compression? Keith

Well guys, I've been following this topic with interest, not least because I want to solve similar problems. However, I'm not sure where this all leads. I think the conclusions are: 1. The internal preamp isn't as bad as everyone first thought. So maybe buying an external preamp won't provide all the benefits I'm looking for. 2. For recording quiet sounds, the first step should be to maximise the signal going into the mic (e.g. get closer). The recording level can then be kept low which minimises noise from the preamp. 3. If this doesn't work, try a better mic with lower self-noise before shelling out for an additional preamp. What do you think? Happy to be shot down - as long as I can learn how to make better recordings. Keith

I also agree with The Low Volta. I have just upgraded to HiMD and love it. It's too easy to focus on the problems when the kit doesn't do exactly what we'd like. HiMD is a great format and we should tell Sony that. OK we may have to jump through some unnecessary hoops and SonicStage can be a pain but I haven't had any real problems. This is the best format for making my own recordings, uploading to pc and burning to CD. And now with 1GB disks I even use it for listening to music as well.

Not sure that this is the problem. Does your mic have a cable or plug directly into the unit? If it plugs in direct, you may pick up the sound from inside the unit.
