  1. I tested that on my older A1000, and couldn't get the firmware out of it :/
  2. there is always this method http://www.mympxplayer.org/how-to-extract-...-tool-vt66.html extracting out the firmware, hehe, any takers?

I don't want to risk it myself on my unit.
  4. well I believe normal lame mp3 can do gapless, as can aac and wma, I have no clue what chipset the 818 has. anyone know?
  5. My guess is that it might turn to MSC if plugged into a MSC car unit.
  6. I'd also like to see gapless, on the go playlists.
  7. I have all my songs in mp3 format, with all ID tag information added personally, I don't use wma, sometimes wav. Yet to add any album art to my songs, too lazy for that .
  8. a better photo of size comparison. I am seriously liking WMP 11, easy to use and transfer over files and playlists. I think I might uninstalled CP since I have no more use for it. use of the player when in the pocket is easy and not cumbersome as an ipod touch would be or nano. the metal finish is a nice touch, sturdy. sound like I said before is amazing.
  9. hmm interesting, thanks for the update and information. If the software doesn't turn out to meet my expections, WMP11 will be my method of choice of transfer.
  10. there are lossless formats and lossy formats in music. lossless as in, the quality of the sound file is identical to the original on the cd (wav) and it will be almost impossible to tell one from the other while listening. (flac and ogg, etc) lossy formats, mp3, aac, wma, compress the music to a state where some quality from the original is lost and certain frequencies are cut out in order to minimize the sound file. this has a negative impact on the song's quality, generally the lower the birate of a song, the lower the quality. Re encoding from a lossy format to another lossy format, say wma to mp3 or mp3 to mp3, you lose even more quality.
  11. LG1 how did the program run and how long did it take to open?
  12. Hmm i don't think there is any method that I can think of. I wouldn't recommend doing anything drastic in SS, it is like a wild animal, the slightest touch will set it off. Not even connet player is this jittery. Juli, I have a feeling that sony is prepearing a firmware update to coincide with the new media manager release. Perhaps gapless will be added to the NWZ models. maybe you could opt for a change in models if that occurs?

    Linux support

the older walkmans with NW tagging can't be upgraded, at least not the A1000/1200/3000. They are old and although sony still supports it if it broke, but not firmware updates or software updates. Although I agree to a point that the old A series was good, great sound, great design and sturdy design, it had many flaws, one being connect player and sonicstage, both of which are resource hogs and not the most reliable for everyone (experiences vary from person to person). the units were hdd which although good and high capacity, have a crudy start up time and battery life is affected significantly with hdd. Plus navigating is a bit slow on the device, could make use of more ram. This is one aspect of the series that kind of was a let down for me. in addition sony opted for OLED when most competitors were colour LCD, and I may have said sure its better on battery life, which it is, but you can't see jack outside in daylight. As well, dust under the cover was another nusiance. anywho, sorry for the rant , there is no planned firmware update planned for the older NW-As as far as I know and sony hasn't hinted that there will be any. farcus if capacity is an issue for you, then the new players won't do you good. But if you don't need too much capacity, I would suggest checking out the new NWZ-As and NWZ-Ss at your local sony store.

    Linux support

If you want a sony walkman to work on linux I would suggest getting the new NWZ-S7xx and NWZ-81x players as they will work on linux using drag and drop.

    IS MY NW-S706 FAKE?

there is another option, return the unit, and buy a new one from ebay.
  16. some info here http://www.sony-asia.com/subtype/usefulinfo/asset/220104

    Cover Art

sony_ml wasn't developed with conver art in mind I believe, I think it was more for just transferring of files over.

    Cover Art

You should be able to add the album art in SS and it should transfer offer when you move the songs over. if there is no cover art in the folder would dragging and dropping work?

    IS MY NW-S706 FAKE?

    IS MY NW-S706 FAKE?

Didn't the european models of the S700 have their volume limited in europe?

    IS MY NW-S706 FAKE?

ok I went searching on the web for photos of the european model. I found this interesting note I went to generation mp3 to check out some picks of the unit, maybe the units in this thread are demos but if they are not then well they have even less writing on the rear http://forum.generationmp3.com/Sony_NW_S60...showtopic=42160 If anyone here is from europe and has a S700 or S600 series that can post pictures of the rear or tell us if there is a made in malaysia sign then please do. edit found this on ebay, 600 model, auction is from the US, but I think the model is from europe.

    IS MY NW-S706 FAKE?

hmm the device looks blueish, or violet which is the colour of the blue 700 unit. so it appears that the front is the same colour as the rear.

    IS MY NW-S706 FAKE?

no worries Panathas17, hehe, and Markey great point, I knew something was up with the unit, and I wasn't sure what it was, but the colours don't match, unless the black colour is blue in pictures? but that didn't appear so in the other photo arvacon posted. Could it be a quick repair by the store?
