ffs - I just got whacked with a £19 import charge from Bluetin using FedEx- thought I'd got away with it as it was marked 'Gift'. But the dreaded import tax demand came though the door the other day. Never mind. Does take the edge off the enjoyment though, so be prepared when importing... I'd still recommend Bluetin for their service and friendliness though...

I think I'll keep my long Hi-MD cases for any ultra length, Hi-LP mixes for travelling- if I ever get round to making any, that is. Otherwise I'll pop them into regular sized MD jewel cases and they can go in the rack... Surprising the 'free' 1GB disk that came with my NH900 didn't have the long case...

I like Sennheiser MX550 earphones for my NH900, though they might not suit all tastes. They are relatively inexpensive, and the step-down model MX350 are pretty good too, and under a tenner...

ffs: bluetin are very good and supply the world spec model of the NH900 and other equiipment to the UK. I've had a very good experience ordering from them...

Type-S is a playback enhancement for MDLP recorded tracks - the higher compression formats in the NetMD mode. All (or most of) the latest MD players have this - the earlier ones did not so MDLP tracks didn't sound so good. LP4 is still pretty unlistenable for music though, even with Type-S. The NH900 looks and feels reasonably tough to me, but I'm very careful with my units, keeping them cased up all the time, and I don't do sports etc. Having said that, I have dropped it uncased about 3 feet onto a hard concrete floor, and it still plays fine, and I can't see any scratches... If you're more active, though the all-metal NH1 or NH3D might suit you better, although you get worse battery life.

I've not had any problems with my NH900 since it was bought in May. You possibly have a defective unit. Hopefully it's still under warranty...

Not necessarily - we have a silver model in Europe too, and that's also of lower output. But the black and grey unit is not sold in Europe (as far as I know), so you have higher output with the black/grey (World) model and not if you have all-black (Euro). Silver is lower output in Europe / higher elsewhere. If I've got my facts straight. Anyway the main thing is that higher output beats better looks...

I think the all-black NH900's are the European models. I have one, and it's lovely - the only thing is that the headphone output is reduced from the 'world model' standard 5mW to 3mW. Still sounds loud enough to me but others may not be so glad about that... I think the black/grey NH900 looks great too, so I'd be happy to swap...

I've had the JB980 for about a year and a bit, and I couldn't be happier with it (well, unless it was a Hi-MD deck...). If you can afford it, it's probably worth while over the JE480, especially if you want the better build and extra features - keyboard input, higher quality components (and sound) and so on. If it's more of a stop gap for you until Hi-MD decks come out (no guarantee they will) you could do worse than the JE480, especially at that price...

Not revolutionary, perhaps, but handy - I regularly use the NH900 to back up and copy over smallish files to and from my home/work computers. Better than a floppy anyway and more convenient for most things than a CD/DVD-RW writer, and it fits comfortably in my pocket. And of course I can use it as a music player and recorder. All in all not too bad really...

I have the black NH900, and I love it  - shame it's a bit fat compared to my N910, but still, sound quality's great and the extra features/formats are pretty much what us diehards have been after all these years. Had it since May, and it's been good to me so far... NB. Only the front is metal - the back's plastic, still feels pretty solid though. 1. You don't need the remote, a standard 3.5mm headphone jack works just fine without. 2. It uses a rechargeable gumstick, but you can use a standard AA instead of/as well by means of an external battery pack (supplied) 3. It has a '5-way' joystick-style jog lever - the round thing and the play button is in the middle of all that - just press to play...

You need either a self-powered mic or a microphone pre-amp to go in between a microphone and your analogue input jack, plus the right connecting cables. Then you can record onto a minidisc which can be played on your E10. Somewhere like soundprofessionals.com or reactivesounds.com sell small battery powered portable mic pre-amps. A cheaper option would be a mains operated one...

Well no, I just burn a regular CD-R copy and take that out :rasp:. Or if I buy a CD while I'm out I play that... Normally, of course i've got my MD player with me... Anyway, the NE900 seems fine as a standard player - soundwise, and I love the CD-text feature, a first for me on a portable. But I guess as a MP3 etc. player it falls flat....
-
Sorry, to hear about your bad experiences NRen. But like Nismo, I'm also a very happy NE900 user, though admittedlty I don't use for playing MP3's. For playing standard CD's and my home compilations it's one of the best CDPs I've owned..
-
Better build quality - the NH900 should have been more like the N910, ie. all metal, slimmer, etc. No more crippling on lower end portables - 5mW x 2 across the range, please. Wider range of home equipment, like the current standard-MD range: decks, mini/micro systems and so on. We've only got the LAM-X1, which by all accounts isn't very good...

The data transfer speed is reckoned to be of the order of 0.6 MB/second, so I've read - not sure if that's the read or write speed, or both. So, 100MB would take 166.67 secs or 2 minutes 47 secs to transfer, if my maths is correct. Sorry, I'm not going to try it, but anyway, it's whizzy at copying my excel and word files...

There is a 'seam' on the filter. One side is the hinge, the other side the clamp latches (?). Just lift the latches up (with fingernails/small screwdriver etc), and the whole thing should easily pop open. Don't try to force it open or you may damage the underlying cable... However, I've noticed some filters are beginning to be melded on to the cables (eg. on some of the USB cables). Maybe this will become a standard practice. Let's hope not - these may not be so easy to remove.

Actually, the NHF800 has the radio tuner, the NH700 is identical (pretty much) but doesn't have a tuner. The NH600D doesnt have a mic in or line/optical in that the 800 and 700 do (though the european version - NH600 has optical/line in).
-
It's good (the NH900 line out), but I don't know if anyone's done an objective assessment of it yet. Doubtless someone will find a fault. Anyway, it's certainly better than the headphone out on the NH600 (my other HIMD unit), so if you can get an exchange, you probably should do so...
-
Any 'hack' would only do for the NH700 what it did for the R700 etc. - the line out wouldn't even be pseudo, just a volume up/equaliser off type of thing. But anyway, what about using the USB connection as a 'digital' out for recording/playback to computer (on the NH700 etc) - isn't that better than any line out? OK, obviously you can't use it for SP, but it should bypass the amp and it's anomalies...
-
It's confusing, but to summarise: 4x is for SP copying with ATRAC 4.5 2x is for LP copying with ATRAC 3 1x is for SP copying with ATRAC Type R, OR for LP copying with ATRAC 3 The Type R and Type S DSP's are the same for the purposes of encoding to MD. Type S only affects LP2/4 playback, not SP or LP recordings...
-
The NH700 isn't meant to have a line out though, unlike the NH900 and NH1 models - maybe they're better. In any case I wouldn't want to entrust the preservation of my recordings to the NH700's headphone out (or the MT90's for that matter). At least the NH900/NH1 'pseudo' line out might be a fairer comparison to the MT90 at full tilt - which is also supposed to be line out...

You're welcome, Poe. I always make a note of the record level I've used for future reference/recordings and write it on a little Post-It note stuck to the CD booklet. A little bit anal, perhaps, and (probably) unnecessary if you use software... :rasp:

That's a kettle... :rasp:

Don't know about the first question (http://www.soundprofessionals.com are very good though if you'd consider importing), and eBay UK often have people selling such things. Yes, the NH700 can accept a non-powered mic. The 'Plug-in Power' bit means it has a mic-input jack, ie. with a microphone pre-amp that supplies power to an external mic...
