  1. ^ 94.55 minutes. That's a good time IMO, about equivalent to a 90 minute tape, for us old-timers who can remember (and still use) such things... Some think that standard SP is better than Hi-SP, by the way. Personally I don't think there's a significant difference in quality...
  2. What a shame... sometimes there's a second or two of silence at the end of a track. If you press the forward button on your CD player at those points (if any) you might be able to gain 9 secs overall... Of course this is where decks really shine - you can fade in/out tracks early as well as other handy editing functions. I don't suppose you have a deck handy though... Maybe you can simulate fade out by using the manual rec level...
  3. Try to record it in one take (well two) - ie. without pressing stop after every track to do titling or whatever... You lose 2 seconds in SP mode whenever stop is pressed, which in your case could be crucial...
  4. They're for filtering out unwanted electromagnetic (RF/microwave etc.) interference. A guess, but possibly needed nowadays because of all the mobile phone masts and power lines etc. that are being put up... I usually remove mine, but if you get a lot of static and distortion coming through on your recordings/headphones you might want to leave them on...
  5. Try a NH-14WM instead. I do and get a much better performance, it charges fine in the NH900 too. You might also be in quick mode which drains the battery quickly - I think that's the factory setting. And you might want to turn the backlight mode off, etc., etc..
  6. It should match your iPod nicely, Cori, not sure where you'd clip it though... Personally, however, I don't think it would suit me, and I'd get a slap (or worse) if I bought one as a surprise for the gf...
  7. No, unfortunately at the moment there are no Hi-MD decks. Many of us here are watching and waiting for one to appear, but as yet none have been announced. The nearest, and that's not very near is the LAM-X1 bookshelf system..
  8. You can't buy an MD-recorder that will integrate with your PC, like a floppy or CD-drive. There are of course plenty of Net-MD (or Hi-MD) recorders that will connect via your USB port to copy CDs or download music from your PC or the internet to MD, and play those MD's on your E810. Which recorder you go for will of course depend on your budget and requirements. If you mention those here there will doubtless be a flood of suggestions...
  9. Surely you can tell some difference between SP and LP4, Dvallere... Agreed that LP4 might sound acceptable to many - I use it sometimes myself even for classical music, but unless your 'SP' is actually fake SP -ie. LP2, I would have thought the difference would be plain, at least through reasonable ear/headphones...
  10. Just to add one note - if you have the NH1 or NH900 Hi-MD unit, use the line out mode on that unit - you'll have to unplug your remote first. This should give you a cleaner signal to record from than the EQ off setting that dex mentioned...
  11. I vote Hi-MD. NH900 for me - but then I'm biased. But then again aren't we all...? I guess I'm happier and more comfortable with removeable media and not being computer-dependant...
  12. Hi. I've got that very same deck (the UK tuned JB980), and the auto track marking seems to work perfectly fine with it. It's connected coaxially with my Marantz CD5400 and optically to my Sony SCD-XB790. I checked the setup and T-Mark is set to LSyn @-72dB threshold. I know that some sources when connected digitally don't carry over the track marks - eg. some DVD players (I think) and my Yamaha CDR-HD1300 (a CD/hard disk recorder). I couldn't say if that's a similar problem with your Quad, or perhaps the CD you're tryng to copy...
  13. I'd suggest seeing a GP first - hopefully you'll get a quick appointment. He/she may be able to do some simple preliminary tests, and in any case be able to refer you to an ear specialist if need be. I guess if that's unfruitful perhaps you could go straight to your local clinic/emergency department... I'd suggest not using earphones in any case for the time being - I think we do have a medical person/doctor here as a member who may be able to advise, but again, any wrong advice could cause damage. Best wishes, and let us know how you get on...
  14. ^^ Yep - Doc knows best... Absolutely - it would be irresponsible to hand out advice (however well-meaning) on this site which might further harm your hearing, possibly irrevoccably (sp.). Other than - go and see your doctor, and best of luck...
  15. Thanks Chris, that soiuynds great. Once you've caught the live recording bug, it never goes away. Been with me ever since my first radio/cassette recorder on my 13th birthday....
  16. Like Nismo, I use long-corded earphones, so I just clip the remote unextended to the side of my case. The Sony standard 'leatherette' pouch is excellent for this purpose - the remote clip fits nicely to the side or the orange Sony tag. The whole thing slips comfortably into my side pocket....
  17. Update: I've been using SS2 and MD Simpleburner over the xmas holidays to populate my Hi-MD format disks from my CD collection. I actually thought it was rather good. I was glad that the CD-text was copied over, or Gracenote CDDB worked well when called for from original disks. The only minus point was the time it took to convert to ATRAC. But it got there in the end without crashing or any ill effects, so I'm happy enough with it's performance - it did what it said on the box...
  18. The Sony MDS-JE7xx series also have PS/2 keyboard inputs, ie. MDS-JE770, 780... Don't know of any other decks that do, although as Adrian points out, any NetMD or Hi-MD can title via a PC and Sonicstage/Simpleburner. Quite frankly that's how I do almost all my titling these days, though I do have a JB940 deck.....
  19. You'd get about 140 minutes worth of Hi-SP on an 80 min blank - ie. just under what you'd get in LP2, which seems a pretty good deal. I've tried various old and new remotes with my NH600, starting with the RM-MC11ES. They all seem compatible, though obviously you won't get group functions with the older ones. None of the AM/FM remotes will work with the NH600 - well the radio won't work, the basic functions should...
  20. Great idea, Syrius. I think over the holidays I'll take my unused (but working) MD gear to our local charity shops - Oxfam, Shelter, Barnados. I've got a few old-ish units gathering dust and I can't be bothered with the palaver of selling them, so hopefully someone needy will get some benefit...
  21. You get 7 hours 55 mins on one 1GB disk for Hi SP (256 kbps). Also, sound quality is at least partially subjective, but I do prefer my Hi-MD units (NH600 and NH900) to either my old Sharps or G750 in that respect....
  22. Music - My Baroque/Classical CDs recorded onto 10 1GB disks so far: Hi-SP [256 kbps] - 1 Rock Hi-MD so far: Mix of Stranglers, Doors, Velvet Underground, Bunnymen, Cocteau Twins, Morris On: 256kbp, plus a few squeezed on @48kbps. The latter (48kbps) sounds surprsingly good... Data Excel file of music recorded from DAB digital radio
  23. All MD recorders have a track mark button which allows you to break up a long recording just by pressing a button. So yes, you could do it blindfolded whilst listening (in real-time of course). Most recorders also allow you to automatically add track marks at specified intervals too whilst recording (eg. after 5 minutes etc.)...
  24. I've dropped my NH900 - about four feet onto concrete. My heart nearly stopped, but the unit still works (including recording) fine. At least it's been truly 'initiated' now...
  25. ffs - no, mine's a Euro 3mW model, presumably like you had (or still have?). I'm happy with the sound level, though if I'd waited I'd have ordered one (ie. 5mW) from bluetin. If fact i still might after crimbo and use the 3mW NH900 for recording or line out duties. 3mW is just about OK - but obviously I'd still prefer 5mW, and would swap for one in a flash if I could. As to output levels - I never need to turn the NH900 over about 18/30, but I do use the custom EQ settings quite a bit which seems to boost the output levels siomewhat. I'm totally pleased with this, but I can understand anyone being concerned (paranoid if you like) - I'd prefer to have 5mW, but FYI I ordered a Sony D-E900 CD player from Bluetin as the PCDP's also suffer from Euro-crippling and I wanted a black model which you can't get over here. It took about 3 days to arrive - I was staggered, I guess it must have been flown over. I used my credit card (visa) to pay - I don't know if that helped to clear it fast. Anyway, totally pleased with the transaction
