  1. I've still got a small tape collection, don't plan on expanding it much, but will hang on to my tape walkmans until I've transcribed it all to disk. In fact, I like the warm analogue sound of tape, compared to the more clinical digital MD/CD, so I'll keep most of it until it wears out. I'm also going to transcribe some audio tapes to MD, so that'll keep the old tape gear busy for some considerable time...

    Nh-1 As Deck

I think they mean plugged into a stereo system with a line out connection to the amp, to play through hi-fi speakers. I've actually answered this on T-board - yes, and the results were pretty good, though not as good as a dedicated deck would (probably) be...
  3. In the UK at least, even the cheapest (Sony) MD's come in boxes, as do the more expensive models. My NH600 came in a very nice box - far preferable to those horrid, finger severing plastic packs. Nice to have somewhere to keep your bits and bobs, obviously... Not sure about other regions, though - I think the plastic things are more common elsewhere...

    Auto Pause

The Sony MDS-JB980 also has auto pause. I believe the JE-780 does too, but I haven't owned this model (or indeed used the function)...
  5. I've hacked both my NH600 and NH900 - Euro models. It certainly seems to work - I fed the headphone out on volume 25/Sound=Normal to my MD deck. For the same track, the 'Peak' recording level was lower for the hacked NH600/900, indicating the hacked level was higher. Hopefully that's a fair test - anyway, I'm happy with my 'uncapped' Hi-MD's, so thanks to all concerned...
  6. I think I'll be going for one of the second generation Hi-MD recorders - probably the RH910 if it takes AA's like the NH900 (do we know about battery options yet?). Maybe a Sharp if they release something (??). Definitely a deck if/when the proper ones emerge...
  7. I use Hi-MD mostly for music storage (ie. playback), but I also do a little PC data transfer. Mostly excel and word files for my home to home computer. Used to do it by floppy disk, then by memory stick - but lost that, then by PDA. But the Hi-MD way has proved the most reliable way (so far) - no problem with any 'bits getting lost' or whatnot ...
  8. I'd like 5GB disks, but only to get about 8 hours or so of PCM. I don't think I could cope with more music than that on a disk - 8 hours of Hi-SP on a 1GB disk is already more than enough for me. I'm starting to lose track of what's on what...
  9. I'd always use digital recording wherever possible. I'm not sure if you can quantify the difference, but a digital connection will give you a cleaner, hiss-free recording. An analogue recording will be noisier and have some hiss - it's usually not too noticeable and may be filtered, but it will be permanently on your recording. An analogue recording (ie digital recording of an analogue source) may sound 'warmer' or more vinyl-like than a digital one, however, which you may prefer. Recording levels from analogue sources may also be somewhat unpredictable, which may prove incovenient.
  10. I bought the NH900 because of: 1. PCM recording, and increased capacity in the newer modes. 2. PC data storage and other new features 3. Best battery life and options (compared to the other Hi-MD units) 4. Slimmer/betterlookibng than the lower-end units (especially black) 5. Uploading potential 6. Digital amp/EQ 7. Compatibility with existing MD collection etc - I'm sure there must be others
  11. Yes, in fact I've bought 10 1GB disks so far, and will probably buy some more this week. It's really nice to have 8 hours of SP (well Hi-SP) on a disk...
  12. You'll have to either use a mono to stereo converter, or record in mono mode (you need to switch to NetMD mode on your NH700. Your bass only outputs a mono signal. Maybe use the recording level on the MD unit rather than on the bass, anyway, you won't get perfect results - I guess you could even blow the mic input circuits...

    Remotes

If I use the remote at all, I just clip it to the side of the MD case, and put it all - MD, case and remote in my side jacket pocket. I find this quite a convenient setup, and my MD is nice and snug in it's case. Never been one for clipping things to shirt pockets etc...
  14. Exactly the same as recording from a line in, except that the analogue lead is replaced by the digital cable. Is your lead plugged all the way in? When all the connections are made and the disks inserted press "Record" on your R900, "Play" on your CD and "Stop" on everything when it's all done - should be that simple. Why not try an analogue recording as a start? Maybe you could clean the ends of the cable with a micro-fibre cloth (like a lens cleaner)... Is your CD a copy protected one - try with another (old and trusted) one to test... Er.. are you sure the cables's plugged to the optical out (ie. not in) of your CD player... etc...
  15. As you haven't used your R900 for a while there may be an accumulation of dust etc. inside the optical in that impedes the laser from getting through - cleaning eg. with a blower/cotton bud may help...
  16. Thanks Rom and Chris, yep, I'll be sticking around so don't worry - you don't get rid of me that easily . And as an ex-mod of course I'll try to behave myself appropriately... Cheers
  17. If I use EQ at all (on the NH900), I tend to push the treble up a notch or 3 (this can sound a bit tinny to some): At present I mainly use Sennheiser MX550 earphones or PX200 headphones Custom 1: (for Rock/Pop/General) 1) 0 2) +1 3) +1 4) +1 5) +2 6) +1 Custom 2: (Classical/Accoustic/General) 1) 0 2) 0 3) +1 4) +1 5) +3 6) +2 For my units with only bass boost I either listen flat or Bass 1, never more...

    Hi Dc In

debs - you may have a faulty unit then
  20. Definitely give analogue a try. With a good cable/line out analogue SP can have a warm pleasing quality approaching the sound, if not quite the fidelity, of vinyl (though of course without the pops/clicks of vinyl).

    Hi Dc In

It means the mains adapter you're using has a too high voltage for your MD unit. What voltage are you using - is it the official 'adapter'? You must use the right one, with the correct polarity, voltage and current - which MD unit are you using?
  22. Mmm, version 0.03 doesn't seem to work at all for me (Windows 2000) - I've got a very full 1GB Hi-SP disk - nearly 8 hours worth, and it just sits there and hangs... Also, sorry to be a bit picky, Marc, but it should be "Case Sensitive", rather than Sensative... (not that it matters of course)...
  23. You can mix and match recording modes/bitrates on a disk however you wish and as space allows. I've made the mistake of cramming the last bit of space with some 48kbps tracks - I wouldn't bother with that if I were you, unless you dislike those tracks...
  24. ^^ Indeed it can, but only to a NetMD format disc - a Hi-MD disc only gives the 'new' formats...
  25. Yes, in fact many use the NH-14WM battery rather than the supplied (NH-10WM) in the NH900. I do so myself - the higher capacity probably gives me about 30% more time (at a guess). If you can bear to use the external battery pack with a good alkaline battery, you can get fairly decent playback/recording times...
