  1. well it wasn't really a question on my part, just more of an observation. I don't actually think there is a HD Amp in the remote I am very familiar with sound as I am a professional audio/mastering engineer and I can tell there is a *slight* difference with and without the remote hooked up to my 600D. (the difference being better, clearer bass and less "digital" highs) However, you are correct about the RH1, there is no difference with or without the remote. However, I never listen to the RH1 with EQ as it is just hooked up straight through the line-out. I do still find it strange that there would be a slight difference (albeit - not noticeable to most people. probably the same people who can't tell the difference between a good MP3 and the original CD) Again, just an observation... Now discuss amongst yourselves.... can any other fellow RH1 owners back up my "claim"??
  2. Hey all! I have decided to use my RH1 strictly for home/studio use and recording purposes. I use my beaten up MZ-NH600D for my "on-the-go" travels everyday. Now I have just started using the remote that came with the RH1 with my 600D... I have noticed that certain functions and display's are not accessible, BUT the EQ that I access with the remote, for some reason, actually sounds better than the EQ on the 600D. My guess is that the EQ "module" is located inside the remote itself and it actually bypasses the EQ on the unit. I have noticed that the settings look the same (as they are displayed on the 600D) however they do not sound the same. If I remove the remote and plug the headphones straight into the 600D with the same EQ settings, it does sound a lot brighter and "digital" very strange maybe the remote has a digital amp in it?
  3. The quality on the RH1 is in my opinion, the best sound you can get from a MD-Hi-MD player/recorder. The bass is good and clear (again not earth shattering 20 Hz at +20db!!) but still competant enough for a high end system. There is a 6 band gaphic EQ that is only accesible on the remote (one of the lame features - however, if you do have it running to your home stereo or studio setup, it is best to keep it flat and by running it out of the line-out) and this EQ is by far the best I have heard yet. The highs are more "rounded" and less "digital" the clarity in vocals is superb and I would say it even "softens" up MP3 playback (my ears HATE MP3s).... I have also used the remote for my on the go player (1st gen MZ-NH600D) and I have found that the EQ (which is activated or even contained on the remote) is actually better than the EQ on the 600D..starnge one that is!
  4. Well I listened to my new RH1 on the weekend with a full Hi-MD in there (over 300+ songs) and listened to it on Shuffle. There was no repeats at all. I even tried this test that was mentioned (before it was mentioned!) and tried a shuffle with just 4 trax...they did not repeat.. Odd I know...
  5. so i guess (*maybe*) we can expect a foobar plugin soon for ATRAC? I would love to be able to play my SS Library in Foo along with Foo's incredible EQ (that I use ONLY to EQ the room and to remove to problems inherant with my speakers)
  6. Christmas came early for me. Have had the RH1 for about 5 days now and it is just freakin sweet. IMO - the BEST MD model (Hi-MD or otherwise) ever made. I can also confirm that it looks like Canada is designated to carry the Black MZ-RH1 (and not re-packaged as the MZ200 like in the US)
  7. In regards to the battery issue, I have been using my RH1 WITHOUT the battery and just the connection from USB without ANY problems. I don't forsee this being a problem for long term use. In fact it will probably end up saving the battery's life as then it won't start charging when you plug it in to the USB (and charging the battery before it is drained and numerous times can lead to a short life) just my two cents
  8. i don't know if i wanna try the ebay thing with my new RH1.. Does anyone know the life expectancy with these batteries?
  9. is this even possible? I recall reading once that it was, but am not sure i wanna try it... any thoughts? would it be good or bad for th Hi-MD? or be good or bad for my new RH1?
  10. WOW That is just messed right up! I tells ya ...on a whim I walked into the Pacific Centre location (their flagship store for Western Canada) and saw it in the display case, but with no price. I talked with a guy ..he said they just got them in that day and showed me on the computer how many there "was" for Canada. he said -7 for Eastern Canada as they are all backordered and 4 for Wester Canada but they were all spoken for except for this one. I waited two days, got the money and my girlfriend picked it up for me on Monday. cost me $480 including taxes and a 3 year extended warranty (on top of the 1 year) for half price!!! Then a co-worker, who is also an MD enthusiast of old, went and picked up another one yesterday from the same store. He doesn't know if he will sell it or keep it. lol. So maybe we got the only ones in Canada ...period? until August? how did THAT happen? Very strange maybe i am a beta tester.... LOL
  11. is there any major improvements over the 3.4 that came with my RH-1?
  12. In fact - the one I bought for $399 CAN at the SOny Store here in Vancouver is black as well. MMM, black metal. can't complain! Funny how Canada would end up with some units right away (although not very many..maybe under 25-50???) but the USA would not get a single one and it would cost $50 more just to make it black? I wasn't given an option. I was told all they had was black! and its not the 200 model with the Mic. I have to buy that seperatley :-(
  13. yabba dabba do I am now the proud owner of of the new BLACK MZRH1. Can I oomplain? Hells no! Especially after learning that the US might not even get this product and it is in VERY short but HIGH demand here in Canada.. Really amkes me wonder? Is this MD/Hi-MDs last grasp? Is this their "thank you" to the Legacy users and Hi-MD community for staying committed while the head execs actually get themselves committed? LOL well what do the rest of you think? is this format really now dead in North America? Does it only have a decent fanbase in the UK/Europe & parts of Asia?
  14. it is official I now have the last MZRH1 available (currently) from the Sony Store here in Canada. Freakin shweet! it really is a sight to behold! The guy at the store had told me that it could be months to get one through them as they are all on backorder (!!!) Guess this is a good sign..either that or the made very limited amount of this model and shipped them all to the markets where there is huge demand (japan, uk, australia) Either way, I am a winner.....although now I am in debt for the next 2 months! LOL all well worth it! I will chime in with my "personal" review once i get it going
  15. well I must say... I have had the NH600D since the day it came out here in Vancouver BC Canada (nearly 2 years ago) Great unit, but it has seen some minor abuse over the years as it is my primary portable player (hell it has even been dropped on concrete and it still works no issues) The crappy "paint job" in silver is very easy to rub off or have it flake off.. You see, I wear a ring on my left hand and thats the same hand I use to hold the device while I walk/jog. After 2 years of holding it like this with my ring rubbing against it, it has actually removed some of the silver finish to show a crappy whitish/blue plastic base. UGLY! I wonder if Sony can repaint the unit for me at an extra charge... It looks pretty beat up. I'll be sure to hold onto my RH1 and keep it just for recording/home use.... Does anyone know if it is easy or possible to have Sony or some other "Professional" re-paint the unit so it doesn't look "welfare"?

    Is it real?

  17. well guys.. quick story: I went to the Sony Store (here in Vancouver BC Canada) on Firday and lo and behold, I saw the new RH1... Beautiful it was! No price was listed. I went to the guy and he said they just got it in like 20 minutes earlier. He looks on the computer. Turns out there are 7 on back order for the east coast and 4 that have been sold through online sales. The one I saw (and held!) is the only available model from the Sony Store in Canada. $359 + tax!!! Anyways, i picked it up and boy is it light!!!!! It is lighter than a full pack of cigarettes. and slimmer than I initially thought. Sony REALLY did outdo themselves on this model. It is their flagship model, for sure.. Just thought i would let you guys know that it is here in Canada now. But the Sony guy did say that it appears they weren't doing mass production runs of this model. He said once the model he had in the store was gone it oculd be 3-6 months for a special order to come in. ARGH! I should be buying it this week, if I am lucky... Any other Canadian members get a hold of this model? BTW - The model I held was black and made out of metal!
  18. Well it appears the format (Hi-MD) is doing well here in Vancouver BC Canada. The Sony Store (from what they tell me) are still stocking about 5-7 units and most are selling quite a bit. On the other hand though, London Drugs, which used to be a major carrier of MD/Hi-MD/NetMD players/recorders has STOPPED selling any and all players/recorders in favour of the 1 GB Flash/HDD players by Sony (and even those are of limited stock).. Mind you, LD still has NUMEROUS and NUMEROUS amounts of blanks, from TDK, Sony and Maxell. Most of the LD outlets that sell Hi-MD blanks just can't keep them in stock. They usually are about $10.99 CAN but they go on sale alot for $7.98 CAN and when that sale happens all outlets (3 near where I live) always sell out within days of the sale (which is also advertised in flyers) Hi-MD blanks are a hot commodity here. I really don't see this format dying off completley. It just won't be available to the average llistener/purchaser in "average" stores.

  20. well I did some searching and I found some hard plastic flip cases (like old cassette boxes) http://www.minidiscaccess.com/generic65.html BUT i really would prefer the slip cases like the ones that come with the new BLUE Hi-MD's... Maybe these will just have to do...
  21. Hey all Remember thos giant ugly "long-box" cases introduced for the 1st Gen Hi-MD blanks? They were used to make them standout more from regular MD's. Well now that Sony has decided to go back to using the old-skool regular small cases, I am stuck with 30+ Hi-MD's (1st gen) in their long boxes with no small cases for them. It looks a little weird having two sets of cases stacked together. Anyone got ANY ideas on where or how I can get 30 or so replacement cases to get ride of these horrid looking things? I asked a guy at the Sony Store here in Vancouver and he gave me a funny look and said Sony didn't seel them by-themselves... But I figure if you can buy empty CD cases as well as empty cassette cases & DVD boxes, there SHOULD be empty MD cases somewhere... :-)
  22. well I know that this has really started to tick me right off....its by far, my medium that gets me through the day....I am going to get the new RH1 when it comes out, but I really don't wanna use it as my portable player, thats what a cheap-o like the 600D is for! LOL.... Argh!, why can't they just issue new firmware for the 1st gen models?
  23. hey all... got a strange one here: I have had some problems with my MZ-NH600D lately. I got it as a Christmas gift back in 2004 (about a month after it came here in Vancouver BC Canada) and it worked beautifuly!!! then over the next year i noticed it started to take longer to scan the disc when a new one was inserted. what ever. no biggie. then one day i was alking home from work and the player stopped playing altogther. I looked at the LCD screen and instead of it displaying Hi-MD (flashing) it now was flashing Hi-SP and the disc restarted itself from the very beginning. No worries, I thought. Maybe a glitch in the recording...then it started happening to all my old SP MD's, Net MD's and Hi-MD's. Doesn't matter what format it was recorded in. I could listen to 5 songs, and then WHAM! it would cut off all sound and basicly re-start itself. Then it started doing weird things such as dropping out the music for 20-30 seconds at a time, but the time display still worked. occasionly it would just freeze (like a windows computer!) and i would have to eject the disc (while it was still playing no less!) So i finally nipped it in the bud and took it back to Sony and got it "repaired" just as my warranty was about to run out. The guy at the Sony Store was incredibly rude, accused me of dropping my player and saying how the technology is insuperior and is prone to breakdowns (!!!!)...he also told me that i oculd buy new warranty when i picked it up. No worries, i though. I asked him twice to make sure of that. He said yup. So i get the player back about 2 weeks later and its all shiny and looks brand new (all they did was clean it!) and the guy refuses to sell me a new warranty and doesnt remember saying i could get a new one. he claims that the warranty is now old (as it ran out while in the repair shop) and we argued, and i left. I was happy, sort of... Well 3 months later it is doing the same thing once again. And I am no longer under warranty and don't want to spend ANY cash on getting this thing fixed as they obviously did not fix the original problem... Any suggestions as to what might be wrong? or how I should go about handling this? I know Sony has had some terrible customer service issues in the past, and I don't wanna NOT get this resolved. So any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
