Entering Service Mode On A Hi-MD Player

Recommended Posts

This was a great post made by WhEdGe that was lost when worms tried to destroy the board. I was able to recover it, but unfortunately, I'll have to repost it all.

Hello People,

entering service mode is possible by following this instruction:

Set the "HOLD" switch on.

While holding down the GROUP key instead, enter the key sequence:

>>| >>| |<< |<< >>| |<< >>| |<< | | | |

i.e. FF FF REW REW FF REW FF REW PAUSE PAUSE

Release all keys.

If you have successfully entered service mode, the display will alternately display the firmware version in the left display and a screen with all LCD segments lit at about half second intervals.

Thats it!

Dont change any settings unless u know what u are doing!!!!!!!!!!! Leave the service mode by removing the battery!!!

This will only be important if somebody has figured out how to change the settings for upgrading ur device. In the moment it is of no use!!

a procedure similar to this http://www2.minidisc.org/mzr700_to_mzr900.html has to be found!

maybe some freak can find it out wink.gif

i guess settings of mz-nh1 or mz-nh900 have to be compared with the settings of mz-nh600 .... a service manual could also help!

i really would love upgrading my device

110- > cc (ignore, every category has this entry) edit: this is the section title

111- > 1c

112- > 1c

113- > 1c

114- > 1c

115- > 1e

116- > 0e

117- > cc .... (mp3?)

and theres 6 different bitrates for atrac3! what a coincidence.... could the 117 be the mp3?

i also noticed that all the categories have a 100 cell, but each one has the entry "cc" so im just going to assume that that is just a dummy field.

Then a follow-up post:

ok guys! heres the first batch of numbers... this is under the 9th category "Design"

The different categories are:

0-Manual

1-NV

2-Power (wont be touchin that tongue.gif)

3-Audio (all the entries is in the post above)

4-MD1

5-Hi-MD1

6-Hi-MD3

7-NORADJ

9-Design

ok, hi-MD 1 and HI-MD 3 im guessing are the formatted and gig discs entries. Note that every new tens digit appears to be a label for the settings that follow it.

I did "Manual" and "design" first, because if there would be settings, it would be in one of two categories! anywho, we'll start off with "9-Design"

Aoix came around to join in the fun as well! Here's his contribution:

hello,

I'm french.

To participate at the futur hack of our HiMD  , I list all values in the service mode on my european MZ-NH600. You can see the text file here.

If you have a NH900 or NH1, please enter in service mode...  because we haven't yes values for this models.

(sorry if my english is bad  )

And with that, I reintroduce this thread to the public and let's resume hackin'!

Thanks xispe,

(excuse me for the spelling mistake in your name on my last post.)

On the older Md player, we can increase the power of output with the hack?

If it's possible, the single solution is that MD player had operational amplifier with numeric control gain. and that this gain is available in service mode. I don't sure. dry.gif

The second solution is to change resistor physically in MD if the gain haven't numeric control.

But I think that it's hard...

Hi xispe,

Shermy: you have a nh900 right?

so... post your machine values

I want to, I really do, but I'm Scared!!

I've read in some other posts or perhaps on the www.minidisc.org site that people have lost functionality of their machines by accidentally hitting something while in service mode.

Is this kind of like changing the registry on your computer...As long as you have a good idea of what your doing, you should be ok?? Of course, I really don't have a good idea of what I'm doing. Also, I only have one MD recorder, and I use it for recording practice sessions and performances almost daily.

I would still like to know if defaults can be changed by making alterations in service mode. Specifically, I would like to change the default recording volume to manual rather than AGC. I recently wasted 3.5 hours of recording due to this.

I did the service mode hack for the R500 a while ago and it added the program playmode to the unit. I notice that on the NHF800, both the unit and remote have the 'PGM' bit on their LCD screens. Would it therfore be hypothetically possible to add that functionality to the 800 (and possibly lower models)?

hey guys... check this one. I have a nh700.

In any of the items if you press the group key, a couple of times, more info is displayed about that item...

for instance:

131

SetTmp 19

132

DspTmp 13 -> NICE ONE biggrin.gif This one is the actual temperature of the DSP. I've put the unit over my leg, and a minute or so later it was displaying 15 tongue.gif

133

DspOfs D7

and so on...

Now at that misterious 220 AdjUID item, heres what you would get

221 YrMnDy CC -> Year, Month, Day ?? My value for this one is 040405 smile.gif Manufacture day ??

222 Serl H CC -> (H = High ?) -> all zeros...

223 Serv L CC -> (L = Low ?) -> this one is nice it changes from model to model.

I've tried to change 223, but with no success, i don't know how to save the value.

EDIT: Don't worry, after messing around lots of time in the service mode my unit is still rocking biggrin.gif

Hi,

I update my text file with the bootsy values...

http://aoix.free.fr/himd/compare_HiMD.txt

but I have some questions, bootsy, your model is a nhF900 (with tuner???) it's exist! or it's a mistake and you have a nh900... and can you verify your value 223 (009553) i tink that a extra number.

and a seconde question for xsipe, what is your methode to have the name of each value?? 131, 132... because me, I find only the "hundred" and "ten" values.

and the last, where are your values, kurisu? tongue.gif

Hi people.

Here is the first version of the service mode names and values from my MZ-NHF800 (European Model). There are some intersting things, though one that stands out to me is:

AUDIO #115 which is called 'VolMax' and has the value 1E, which in decimal is 30 and surprise surprise, is the maximum volume level for the unit!

I anticipate a hack..... biggrin.gif

cheers xispe.

I will add more info from other categories if it is needed.

aoix: My AdjUID values are correct, I have double-checked them in service mode and they are definately:

221: YrMnDy CC

222: Serl H CC

223: Serl L CC

edit:

Hang on, I know what you mean. The display shows CC but using the format in your table aoix, I have:

221: 040405

222: 000000

223: 011778

Hi, i corrected my post it was a mistake with that mz-nhf900, but this value 223 (009553) i got 6 digit, also value 221 (40405), 222 (00000), 223 (09553) i got with additional first 0 (i guess that you are skiping that first 0 whitch is always 0??)

Awesome Davew!!

Thanks to bootsy too!!

I'm warming up to getting my values out there. Be patient with me please unsure.gif

Hey Davew, was your beep set to on or off when you went into service mode? The reason I'm asking is to determine the difference between "cc" and "00". Could "00" mean default or "on"? What I'm looking to mod is the default setting for recording. I'd like to have it set to manual rather than AGC. Seeing the following makes me wonder if it's as simple as changing "00" to "cc".

3: AUDIO

100: Audio

110: Au Pb

117: Beep CC

130: AGCPrm

131: WrtAGC 00

Also seeing things like YrMnDy and Clock set to CC lead me to the same conclusions. Am I way off here?

I wonder what all these mean as well?? Any Ideas??? huh.gif

120: Au Rec

121: Lo iMa 15

122: Ho iMa 1C

123: Lo iAt CC

124: SensLo 1C

I promise you will see my values. Just give me some time to build up some courage.

Thanks Shermy, at the moment I am working to expand my info, with more categories and information about what you can edit.

I am 99% sure i had beep set to off when I compiled my list and it seems that most of the audio stuff cannot be changed, but there might be hope yet. As I said, I am working on improving my info, will have that ready as soon as possible, but I have to be careful, what with working in service mode!

That's a potential bummer.

Hey aoix, I noticed your beep was set to on, however, you didn't write down the audio values. Have you looked at them? If so, what was your value for the following:

3: AUDIO

100: Audio

110: Au Pb

117: Beep CC

my values of service mode audio menu are

3 AUDIO===============

100 Audio ***SCC

>110 Au Pb ***SCC

>>112 L 1kHz ***S1C

>>113 R 1kHz ***S1C

>>114 Infi 0 ***S1C

>>122 Ho iMa ***S1C

>>123 Lo iAt ***SCC

>>124 SensLo ***S1C

>130 AGCPrm ***SCC

and i check the "beep". If I have "beep on" or "beep off" in user menu, the value "117 Beep" in sevice mode are the same "CC"

helo, does any body know how to save changes in service mode in menu audio??

I want to change setting 116 AvlsOn ***S0E -> 116 AvlsOn ***S14, these are setting to limit avls. i want to change limit from 14 (0E in HEX) to 20 (14 in HEX).

But i can't save this setting.

Any ideas??

PS. in my mz-nh900 settings in menu audio are also:

It's good question, I test the old method " press pause" but it's dont work... sad.gif (I test to put '0F' to replace the '0E' of AUDIO 116 Avls value)

and I update the text file that compare values (Maunal, Audio and Design) of all peoples.

and also, I update the second text file of all values that I have can read on my NH600.

Thanks aoix!! cool.gif Well, I guess that rules out my thinking. sad.gif

Also, nice work at deciphering (or, at least attempting to decipher) all the codes in your service mode .txt files!! cool.gifcool.gif

I hope there is someone that knows how to save changed audio values. I'll be posting my values soon.

Yes! come on! we're gettin' places!

I'm taking AUDIO #115 (VolMax) as an example here (since it seems a fairly safe test value to ..ehem.. meddle with!)

The 2-digit Hex value can be changed using the wheel for the first digit and the 5 way stick (up/down) to change the whole number up or down by 1.

However I can find no way of saving that value to the memory?

The T MARK button moves you to some other editing thing that I don't understand and no other buttons seem to save the new hex value????

But, as you say xispe, we will do it!

Yeah! Dave

Edit:

I have made some minor changes to my listing

some function descriptions in the AUDIO section that will be of use for your table, aoix.
