Hi!

That's my story...

Before summer I was looking for buying Sony MZ-NF810. It had fm radio and 85h battery life! Then I hear about Hi-MDs. "I'll wait a bit" I think...

When Hi-MDs were realised I was looking for buying a minidisc with:

1)FM Radio

2)Hi-MD (1GB!!!!)

3)Long battery life

I didn't have much of a choice. Just four models...

I can't realize Sony's policy on this subject.

1)I 'm buying a portable music player. Of course I need fm radio... Why just one model??? Why? (So, MZ-NHF800 it is)

2)Hi-MD is really cool... 1GB of music maybe is not comparable to 20GB Mp3 HD Players. But you can always have more than 1 disc with you on a trip... Features like USB, data transfet really are cool.

3)27h battery life. Not bad! Even if you run out of battery, you only need one AA. Easy to find or even carry with you. But it's a pity if you think of the 85h of MZ-NF810.

So, one nice day a friend of mine buys MZ-NHF800 and I found out that neither minidisc's LCD nor remote control's LCD have light... That's right! No light? Why?

I know that's some of you will say that this is a detail... But it will surely trouble lots of people... I am very thoughtful about this buy.

What you think? Am I overreacting?

None of the HiMD units have backlights in their displays. The remotes for the NH900 and NH1 do, though.

Simply put, backlights require two things:

1) power. i.e. making battery life shorter

2) space. Putting the backlight into the unit's case might increase the overall size of the unit by a few mm.

I think it's sort of a stupid ovesight on Sony's part, myself. I mean, $10 watches have had indiglo backlights for over ten years now, you'd think they'd find a way to stick it in there, but then - the added circuitry involved might also cause electrical interference hell for the audio circuits.

Moral of the story: carry a mini maglight.

and and it cant take *that* much power to power the displays anyways.

examples:

a) your watch examples, they last forever

cool.gif the NH1 remote has backlight powered by the unit

I suspect that the EM issue is the real reason. Yes, a watch can run indiglo periodically and have its battery last for 2 years. But - have you ever put your ear to an indiglo watch when the backlight is on? You can actually hear it.

This would suggest some kind of duty-cycle modulation or something that would likely cause hellish problems for audio circuits.

Which would mean, simply, that adding the backlight is not impossible by any means - but that the backlight, its circuitry, and its shielding would have to be taken into account. This is why I expect that adding indiglo or the like would probably increase the bulk of the players.

Sony already does it with some recorders, see for example my MZ-S1 which has the orange back light. It doesn't stay on all the time but it's still a joy to be out early in the mornings on my walks and see what track is playing or the volume level. It would be a treat to have that on my NH900 but that is what I bought the 40ELK remote to do for me.

I have a MZ-NHF800, and yes, the absence of a back-lit light annoys me. I personally feel it is an oversight on Sony's part, and this does bug me. For a unit that you pay close to 300 bucks for, these oversights (if indeed they are) are not excusable. If it is not an oversight, then it is a poor decision (in my opinion) on Sony's part.
