Tourist
I recorded two concerts in PCM on a 1G Hi-MD. Seated shows, with the unit fairly still, not being knocked around. Battery gauge reads full. On playback (also with unit still, sitting right here on my desk), there are two kinds of gaps: one that doesn't return if I rewind and play back the same spot, and one that is apparently a silence in the recording. I tried to transfer via SS 2.3 to see if it was some playback problem in the recorder, and the upload goes along and then just stops, leaving nothing in My Library. (But not preventing the attempt to upload it again, with the same results.)What do the experts thinK? Bad disc? Or problem with the unit? It's an NHF-800, and hasn't acted up before. Tourist
Well, it just skipped on a different disc, so I called Sony Support. Think you have a one-year warranty on your Hi-MD? BWAH HA HAA!You have a one-year parts warranty and a 90-DAY LABOR warranty. That is, the one-year warranty is really a 90-day warranty. In their incredible generosity, Sony will exchange a dysfunctional less than year-old HI-MD for a refurbished model for just $31.95. No idea what the guarantee is on the refurbished one: 30 seconds? newest oxymoron: Sony Customer Service Edited February 2, 2005 by Tourist

No idea what the guarantee is on the refurbished one: 30 seconds? newest oxymoron: Sony Customer Service←It doesn't help you any, but I am interested to see that the European warranty is different - here are the termsBy this Guarantee, Sony guarantees the product to be free from defects in materials and workmanship at the date of original purchase for a period of ONE YEAR from that date. The Sony company that provides and will honour this Guarantee is designated in this Guarantee or accompanying leaflets under the country where you seek guarantee service. If within the guarantee period the product is determined to be defective (at the date of original purchase) due to improper materials or workmanship, Sony or an ASN member in the Guarantee Area will, without charge for labour or parts, repair or (at Sony's discretion) replace the product or its defective parts subject to the terms and limitations below. Over this side of the pond, we are always complainin' that everything in the US is cheaper. Perhaps this goes a small way to explaing the difference?? bland10000
Tourist, did you buy your player on a credit-card with buyer protection? If so, look into your options there.
Syrius
I thought that labor referred to any repairs made on the thing under the warranty. A faulty part is a faulty part is a faulty part. And one year is one year is one year.
Justin42
The 1 year parts/90 day labour is unfortunately becoming pretty common in the US.I normally hate extended warranties but I definitely picked one up for my NH1!

I bet the labour costs a fair bit.
Tourist
Labor is required to figure out what part is malfunctioning. Some skill is also required to replace whatever has gone wrong. Without labor, a parts warranty on something as intricate as an MD unit is pretty worthless.
