Michael1980
Recently all of Sony's dap gotten an mp3 update. The MS90D did not, but that is an 2003 model. Do you think it will happen for 1st gen HiMD units?
Christopher
I honestly don't believe it will occur, and I'm just as upset as the next guy/girl but it happens, I suppose.
roguefan99
Firstly is it possible?Secondly if it is, how do we contact Sony to express our interest in a firmware upgrade?
Michael1980
Someone in the forum spoke to Sony about a firmware update to his S1 (?) and they said it was possible. Also the Vaio music player is updates by running a small program of it, so I hope that is the same for Hi-MD units.

Do you think it will happen for 1st gen HiMD units?←how flexible Sony's DAP design is!u won't see this thing happen on other brand DAP(non-Sony mp3 player to include .ogg support after production only with a firmware update?U'd better wait for it until next life!)Firstly is it possible?Secondly if it is, how do we contact Sony to express our interest in a firmware upgrade?←my opinion is just like kurisu, doubt itbut it is possible until the moment u open the case of a Hi-MD unit, examining it's hardware and software componentmy opinion is : if u've got a proprietory thing come with their product, why need to wait for something that is worse in quality?(Sony claims ATRAC3plus@256k is better than cd quality, so I guess mp3 even at 320k can't beat ATRAC3plus down)the better thing would be : request for something like FLAC that is lossless compression
atrain
the better thing would be : request for something like FLAC that is lossless compression←if you want loseless there is PCM. if you want compressed loseless then you really are picky guys. you could buy an ipod & use apple loseless. roguefan99
I agree, I dont think Sony would make it possible to do an upgrade, after all they have to have a way of selling the new models! As for this opinion I'm in agreement with it totally. The only time I probably wouldn't agree with it is the fact that I currently use two computers, and occasionally I would like a way to transfer my music files. The only problem I have with ATRAC is the DRM thats encoded into it.my opinion is : if u've got a proprietory thing come with their product, why need to wait for something that is worse in quality?(Sony claims ATRAC3plus@256k is better than cd quality, so I guess mp3 even at 320k can't beat ATRAC3plus down)Of course we are all speculating on improvements with MP3, but really it could be just as difficult with MP3s depending on how the latest version of Sonicstage works. At the moment I'm more excited by any improvements in Sonicstage rather than flashing new firmware to my minidisc or buying (I wont be) a new model Edited February 22, 2005 by roguefan99
doclloyd
While I agree that it's unlikely that an upgrade will be available, I was actually surprised that Sony even offered a firmware update to the NW-HD1 to add MP3 playback after they annouced the HD3. Best case scenario would allow for an update to existing models via some user-upgradable method (ala Vaio Pocket), slightly worse case would be having to send in the unit (like the HD1.) I personally would go for that option. Since the units have been out less than a year, it's possible I suppose. I think it would leave a better taste in the mouths of early Hi-MD adopters, such as most of the readers/posters of this board. Sony has been doing a lot more right in the past year, from slowly improving sonicstage to adding direct MP3 support to everything they have. Who knows, I'd like to be an optimist and think they'll surprise us again.
Christoph
Well, may be they will not give out an update for the "old" units (just bought a Nh900, lovely piece of hardware), but if the new units are available... maybe someone can enter into service mode... and maybe the difference to the "old" units aren't as big as it looks...and maybe we could get some information about some more values......well, just a hope. Nopeu can't experience improvement from mp3, not until the moment u bought another new mp3 playerAt the moment I'm more excited by any improvements in Sonicstage rather than flashing new firmware to my minidisc or buying (I wont be) a new model←let's just wait for a little time
streaml1ne
I wonder how the first gen units will respond when playing a disc with MP3s created with a second gen unit. A large enough amount of complaints might help bring a firmware update to fruition if it's possible. Seems like not offering an upgrade on the first gen units will be a headache for Sony's support.
