Nh -10wm Lasts One Hour & Aa Nimh?

1. I admit it, I tried out the NH -10WM battery that came with my NH900. I'm planning to get the better capacity battery that I've read about here, but in the meantime I wanted to see just how long this one would last. I charged the battery according to the instructions in the user manual. I then proceeded to use the MD to PLAY (not record) some of my recordings. I swear it did not last more than an hour.

Is this typical?

2. I did a second test using AA batteries without the gumstick. First I used a new dry Alkaline, non-rechargeable battery. I recorded our band for about 45 minutes of play time in HiMD on a standard 80min disk. Did a beautiful job and still had 2/3 battery juice left according to the meter.

Then, I used my fully charged AA 2400mAh NiMH battery, in another recording session. This time, I also had my remote hooked up (the one that came with the 900). It did not last more than 30 minutes, and while it WAS recording, it would stop recording at random points, and I'd have to restart the record again.

I guess there are 2 problems I'm asking about here. With my old R70, I could use 1 NiMH AA for hours and hours.

a. Has anyone noticed that the NiMH provide less life than the dry alkaline batteries?

b. Has anyone had your MD just randomly shut off while recording?

Thanks.

Kim

I admit that I had VERY poor performance with my NH-10WM battery that shipped with my NH900 but I can get over 12 hours of Hi-SP playback at 60-80% volume with just the NH-10WM on my RH910. If you charge it and let it drain completely at least twice, it will condition the battery. I am even doing that with my NH-14WM that shipped with my RH10.

I think the NH-10WM is the low alternative but I was VERY suprised at the results I got with my RH910. It will save me from taking that AA attachment everywhere I go. Give it a try and see. I usually just put it on repeat and shuffle and 80% volume and then go to bed. It will run all night and then when I get home in the afternoon, I charge it. Do that at least twice and see what kind of playback time you get.

Thanks very much. I will your suggestion a try. I'd be fine even with 5 hours smile.gif))

It's an unfortunate fact that 1st gen HiMD units are very power-hungry. I really like my NH900 but battery life is one area where it is definitely lacking (I came to HiMD from a G750, which has ~48 hrs playback off 1 AA).

That being said, with a better battery than the 10WM the battery life isn't TOO bad. I'm currently using a no-name brand 1350mAh gumstick and I can get a fair run out of it. Even when the battery indicator starts to flash I still have over an hour of listening (using Hi-SP) until it dies on me.

is there anything wrong with "topping the battery off" with the RH910 - like plugging it in when it's not empty(say half full - that's enough to play mp3s but not enough to record)? will this lower the battery's life and charge memory like many other units suffer from?

yep... gives memory effect, which can be removed by going through a couple of full charge/full recharge cycles... and more info on battery behaviour can be found @ this page

thanks Low Volta for that link. I'm wondering can you use the NiMH and a AA battery at the same time - when the NiMH runs out will the machine automatically flip over to the AA pack? how do you guys do long portable recordings without interuption?

when I need real long action from my NH900 I use the AA-add-on on top of the NiMH gumstick yes... it works without 'flipping' though, seems (I read this here on MDCF that is) that the AA add-on will just charge the gumstick a little bit all the time... so, for continual use it's good, but don't let the AA-add-on stay on for long stretches if you're not using the machine...

that way I have managed to get 8 hours of playback and 6 hours of recording in one day... and the battery indicator still showed some juice left

I replaced the 10WM from my NH-900 wih a GP 14WM pretty much straight away and it gets much better life (about 10 or 11 hours instead of 8). But even before I charged and discharged the 10WM a few times it was never as bad Kmataruse said. Maybe you got a faulty unit? Maybe the built-in charger isn't working properly?
