Library Advice For A New Hi-md Owner

Hi there,

Thanks to your help my RH10 has been shipped today. So now onto the next step!

Here's the scenario:

I have a sizeable portion of old mp3s that I don't have better quality versions of.

I also have a range of CDs ready to rip in good quality, as well as some FLAC files.

I have a very large quantity of original 74/80 disks, many of which contain my only copy of albums I like (all SP).

All of this is listened to with Shure E2cs so I want to do this right.

What to do?

1) When I get my Hi-MD I have no choice but to use the mp3s above, but is it fully established that converting them is the best option, despite the fact you're compressing them further?

2) Are the CDs better off ripped straight with simple burner or recorded slowly via optical? Is that a stupid question to even ask?! Maybe this is hard to recommend, but KJ_Palmer advised Hi-SP format (256kbps) in his previous helpful reply. I def. don't wanna use PCM or v. low quality. Would anyone else suggest another? I'm planning to use plenty of my original MDs to expand them...especially as finding Hi-MDs seems to be difficult!

4) Is there a FLAC to ATRAC converter? I'm buying music in FLAC these days specifically so I can change it other formats as the need arises.

5) The old MDs...now this is the tough one. Even if they're recorded in analog (very few) I don't have much scope do I? i.e. Impossible to play from an old MD player into the RH10 via an optical cable. Does that mean I have to record via Audacity (etc.), burn as wav and then encode as ATRAC? Am I missing something here?

Even if I was to get the Chaintech AV-710 (in which case I'll have to borrow a desktop!) it doesn't have everything I'd need. wacko.gif

Thanks in advance for any help you could give.

1. I don't know, as I don't use MP

2. if oyu want to build a library use SS, if not use SB with Hi-SP...realtime recording is not necessary IMHO

3. (or 4. for you tongue.gif ) as far as I know it's FLAC->wav->atrac only

4. (or 5.) if you have a MD with ptical out you could record them optically to Hi-MD, upload through USB (I guess, can't see why it wouldn't work...) or rerecord them analoguely in Audacity (with quality loss) or simply use them as they are (SP sounds very nice on a RH10 I've heard) and buy new ones for future use

greetings, Volta

No worries, that's pretty understandable.

Good! I'd prefer to not have to monitor each recording.

Bad! I was probably being presumptious but lets hope someone makes a converter (I won't hold my breath!)

Mmm...I actually do have an optical out on my MJS unit, but it seems to be 'breaking disks' on me so I'd kind of given up on it. I guess I should start saving for a repair. It's hard to narrow down the cuprit machine but I'm pretty sure it's that.

Thanks a lot for the replies.

Also to ask...

Where exactly can I buy Hi-MDs?! Planetminidisc and minidisco are out of stock (same company I guess)...and although eBay has plenty, I'd appreciate any recommendation you could give.

Even if it was just a trusted eBay seller.

I'm in Europe but can order to the States this month too.

Thanks!

I've been wondering about this myself... a number of brick and mortar stores sold them here in Belgium, but they seem to be all out of them... I've only got four, but for daily use I just reformat 80min MDiscs to Hi-MD...that's cheap and easy to find

No actually! Thanks for the link.

I just ordered some from Minidisc Australia via eBay...they have varied prices according to their market so it pays to shop around. They've 99.9% feedback and the negative isn't really, so I went ahead and ordered some. I'll post back how I get on. I ordered to Europe by the way.

No retailers carry them where I live, still.  Radioshack will order them in at $13.99CAD apiece, which is a total ripoff.

Even standard MD80 blanks average $5CAD apiece here, though.

What about http://www.minidisc-canada.com/shopdisplay...t=Blank+Hi%2DMD?

CAD: $8.99 each.

Fairdeal has a fairly decent price alright, thanks for the link.

I've also found some on sale that are due to be in in 2 days - http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home...ase_pid/244753/.

Hope that helps.

I can't purchase things online. If it's not somewhere I can walk through the doors of and put cash down, then I can't deal with them, basically. Trying to convince someone else to mail-order a single blank from Montréal is ludicrous, too. I can't afford more than one at a time, and the shipping would be insane.
