Hi, minidisc.org forum newb here.

im looking into buying a cheap entry level hiMD, 1st or 2nd generation, doesnt matter. price is an issue for me.

i have been a longtime netMD user and im still quite satisfied with its quality so im pretty much looking for a decent sounding player that simply has the ability to read/write hiMD discs; dont expect any bells and whistles.

i was looking into the MZ-DH710, what do you guys think?

sonic_rage,

Go for the MZ-RH710 which has a line-in and power adaptor insocket rather than the MZ-DH710 which is only a downloader. 2nd Generation unit

Same for the MZ-NH600 rather than MZ-NH600D. 1st Generation unit.

Yeah, well GOOD LUCK finding an RH710 anywhere. It certainly is a discontinued model, plus even if you Froogle it, there are 2 hits, and both are incorrect (Musician's Friend had a typo, and they're really selling the DH710).

These days it depends on which country, there seems to be a few in UK.

See doomlordis' review of his MZ-RH710 (13Aug2005)

In Australia there are no D/RH710s at all only NH600s.

Anyway the main point is if you are going to buy a Hi-MD you've more flexibility for recording with a line-in as well as the USB.

sonic_rage, if you have some high end net MDs perhaps you should aim for a higher spec model eg RH910 as veezhun suggested.

please tell us your budget in US dollars.. the rh910 on amazon is really a good purchase.. has mic in, opt in, line in, digital amp etc etc..

its a one time purchase so dont lose out on that mic in option.. you never know when you might neeed to plug in a mic and start recording

If you are going to be simply downloading music from your computer, and have no use for a line/optical in, or a mic in, the cheapest you will find will probably be the NH-600D. I picked one up recently on eBay for about $30 USD. Works great as a player. Only downside about it being a 1st gen is that your mp3's will have to be converted to Atrac prior to transferring.

I've seen these for sale brand new for around $60 a few places online.

Personally I would recommend a unit with at least a line-in. That way you are not limited to recording only from a computer. But again, if you will only be transferring from a computer, the NH600D should fit your needs. You can also use it as a removeable disk on your computer.

The NH600D also only runs from 1 AA battery, and does not have any AC input for power. However it seems to get power from USB while it is connected to computer and transferring.

Best advice I can give though... If you can dish out a bit more and get a unit with a line in & mic in, you will be set. And you won't be unhappy.
