Does your computer sense your unit as an external drive? 98 may be too old to do this, do yourself a favor and either upgtade to XP pro pr even better get a newer computer with XP pro and transfer your HD to the new computer, sounds like you are running at the limits of an old system

How can I use HI-MD as extenal drive if I have windows 98? the problem is I don´t have space in the disk to install Sonicstage.

Windows Xp recognice it with no problem, but W98 needs some drivers os similar, and I need the smaller thing to install

Is this possible?

Thank You

W98 does not have the USB Mass Storage driver, but you can install it. I suppose it is available from Windows update or the Microsoft website.

You still need Sonicstage to put playable music on your disc though.

I confirm that installing the Sony private audio driver is necessary to use an Hi-MD device as external USB storage (tested and working: Windows 98SE / MZ-RH10). The best way to do it is to use the excellent SonicStage 3.2 offline installer that can be found in the download section of the MiniDisc forum.

I've used HiMDs under win98 as data drives. All it required installing was the personal audio driver [which has a version of the USB mass storage drivers in it].

If you have a copy of SS that came on CD with your portable, you can install the driver by itself without SS. Even from SS 2.1 the driver alone works fine for data purposes.

Odd! I thought that it shouldnt be necessary to install any other drivers than USB mass storage drivers in order to use the MiniDisc as a mass storage device. Sonic stage is necessary only if you want to listen to music.

Ive used my HiMD just like that without installing any drivers, on XP though but still.

As someone already said the USB mass storage driver is already part of Windows XP base install, it is not with W98 hence you have to install it separately.
