MZ-NH1
Hey guys, as most of you know I own a Sony MZ-NH1, which is fantastic for recording everything I want to, and to also listen to music. My Problem is that I would like a device that has a longer battery life, and is able to store A LOT more music (I know you can just keep buying the 1GB discs... but I would like everything to be in the one place... if you know what I mean)So I am asking you guys what device you think would be a good option. I will definitely keep my NH1, as we all know nothing beats MD's for recordings.... but I would just like more space for all my songs...My cousin has one of the new iRivers, that holds 40GB, and can play back movies, and I recon that would be pretty sweet...I DON'T want an iPOD, as they are just shit with their cracking/leaking screens...What would you all suggest? I would like a lot of storage as well... like 40GB is pretty good I am going to Singapore on Thursday (3 days time) so am hoping to get something there using Duty Free. Thanks everyone - Andrew

Sparky191
The iPod screen issue got sorted very fast. Also all players including MD break. MP3 players definately are not very robust, so you need a good warranty and RMA process. Apples is one of the best. That said I don't like the iPods all that much. Cowon is ok. Video isn't very good and the subpack dock isn't great. I've heard people haaving problems with their RMA process too. iRiver are very slow to fix problems with their players. Check out the portable forums over on Head -Fi Edited November 28, 2005 by Sparky191
Breepee2
WIth units with big drives you'll probably want to fill it *fast*. Sony is no good at this point, it will take hours to fill a 20GB Sony MP3 player through SS or Vaio tools. Also you'll want a device that navigates this big amount of data easily and at least Sony's HD1 was a real hassle.Decide first how much you need on the road and what else is important. I've just settled for a 5GB Rio Carbon, because of physical size, battery life, soound quality, ease of navigation and method of transferring music (no application needed). You probably have some different preferences so I suggest to have a look around.dapreview.com http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=22 to name a few usefull sites. Also use google to find out more.

Sparky191
I don't find SS slow itself. Just the transfer to HiMD. SS is as quick as iTunes on my P4. However Audiograbber & Lame is quicker than both. Like the phrase, "I'm a lover not a fighter". In my opinion HiMD is a great recorder not a player. But you can also use it as a player. And only about 3GB took an hour to tranfer, it was even as MP3.Never used iTunes with a pod, but my Rio is just drag n drop. MZ-NH1
Thanks very much guys for all the info!!Currently in England, VERY Cold. Was in a snow storm yesterday as well! What I think I might do is either purchase an external hard drive (for all my portable data) or look around for a portable music device... Still very undecided on what to do but I will have a look around and see what there is to offer.Hope u all have a good Chrissy and Happy New Year!! Sparky191
What I think I might do is either purchase an external hard drive (for all my portable data) or look around for a portable music device... Still very undecided on what to do but I will have a look around and see what there is to offer. An external drive is always useful, as backup and as transport for large amouts of data. No matter which player you get an external drive to back up your library I would say makes a lot of sense. I've two of them myself. But I've a lot of other data in addition to my music. Well, I seriously doubt my dual Xeon 3.2GHz is the choking point here, both programs are the only ones that succeeded in locking up this machine, never seen that before. And only about 3GB took an hour to tranfer, it was even as MP3.I've a Dual 2.4GHz Zeon never had a problem with SS(HiMD), or iTunes (Shuffle) or Using drag and drop to my Zen Micro. To be honest I've never had a problem with 2.8 or 3.0 P4's either. These portable players have slow drives. So you don't get desktop speeds from their drives. But 3hrs seems excessive. I might have been some other problem, with the USB bus or drivers. Who knows. Seems "off" though. I reckon it takes about 10mins to fill my 5GB zen and about 20-30mins to fill my HiMD. Shuffle about 5 mins. Theres lots of things that could be the cause of it. While I like ATRAC. It only works on one of my 3 devices. So MP3 is the best format for me. Maybe if I had only Sony units I wouldn't mind re ripping my music to ATRAC. Though I'd need something better than SS.
