The MZ-NH1 only charges on its cradle with adaptor, and doesn't charge through the power provided by a regular USB port (that's only used for operation of the device, not charging). So it's down to how Sony designed the device.
Skradgee
Yup. The only way to charge the NH1 battery is with the charging stand. USB powered battery charging didn't come along until 2nd generation Hi-MD.
bobt
I could be wrong, but I seem to think on a real long connect a small degree of charging took place on my NH 1's, will try again when my new one comes inTTFNBob
tommypeters
Yes, you could be wrong...It seems like the NH1 was redesigned a few times before it was released, and that possibly somewhat prematurely. The goal was to make the unit small and light, and eventually some other shortcuts had to be made. One is that he NH1 has the same, proprietary, connector for USB and charging and when in the charging cradle you can't have it connected to your PC. Originally it seems like the cradle should have had both a charging connector and an USB connector, but there was no room on the NH1 unit. Some circuitry needed for the charging is inside the cradle. This placing of the circuitry sure doesn't seem optimal, and isn't. Probably that was a "late addition" when it was found out there was no room inside the unit... rei-gouki
hmm... A friend of a friend got an NH1 recently and promptly installed and ran SonicStage to download music. After filling up some MDs, they found that the battery meter was showing full charge. I don't think the Li-ion would have been shipped with much charge... but these two girls are known to bend laws of physics every now and then. One possible explanation is that Sony has been big on shared power, here. In my experience, the NH900's external AA and the gumstick are parallel power sources that function together. Connecting the external will not disconnect the gumstick internally. It's possible that by simply powering the circuits, the Li-ion will charge from the power like any mobile phone that operates while the charger is connected.
