hold down the scroll button until the menu comes up scroll to "usefull" then press the scroll button. "Search" appears on the screen. Press the scroll button again and you will have different "search by" options ie "by artist", "by title", "by group" etc.

ok...it is more 'work' to jump folders with the 40...but you do get lots in return and still...maybe ppl should learn to listen to an entire album again in stead of jumping between tracks and stuff :P

Amen to that. I did not even know how to search on the 40ELK until about two weeks ago. :D

When I hold down the scroll wheel nothing happens. If I just press it once it brings up a menu consisting of "normal play", "group play", "artist play", etc. The Artist Play function works nice for searching by artist, but I can't find a way to search tracks.

when playing a track, just scroll with the scrollwheel without pressing it and you'll see the tracks of the current album and after that the other albums on the disc, press the wheel on the album you want, scroll again till you get at the track you want, then press again and the selected track starts playing

for more info on the RM-MC40ELK functions, be sure to check the NH1 user manual as well (downloadable from the minidisc.org equipment browser pages) as it describes the functions of the remote in detail (with the NH1, but most functions will work for other HiMD-models as well)

Yes I'm aware of that (kind of obvious), but I want to be able to go into search like I do on the 600D itself to search by track in alphabetical order.

For that just scroll the wheel and they should come up just like when you turn the scroll wheel on the main unit. Are you sure you are not accidentally pushing the scroll button while scrolling?

Yeah I'm sure. Maybe you guys are misunderstanding me. I know that I can just scroll through songs by spinning the jog dial (its very obvious how to do that). I am asking how to SEARCH by track in alphabetical order. On the 600D itself I would hold down the nav/menu button for a few seconds, then scroll to useful, then hit search, then hit search by track and then it lists all my songs in alphabetical order for easy navigating. How do I do this with the remote?

Exactly in the same way :)

I just tried it on a NH600/MC40ELK. I hold down the jog wheel for a few seconds, then scroll to useful, then hit search, then hit search by track and then it lists all my songs in alphabetical order for easy navigating...

I know what it is. Doh! Why did I not think of it sooner. You are using simple menu mode. You need to change it to advanced. On your unit, hold down the menu button, go to option then select Menu Mode, then select advanced. Try it. It should work after you change that setting. I forget about it since that is something I set when I first get a unit and then never change it.

I did as you instructed and changed it to advanced, but still no luck. :( Holding down the scroll wheel still does nothing.

But to change into advanced mode you must have had to go into the menus, by holding down the jog dial on the remote? If you can access the menus via the remote, simply go to Useful => Search.

No. I did it through the player. I still can't figure out how to do it with the remote. If I hold down the jog dial on the remote, all it does is turn on the backlight.

have a look in the NH1 manual and see if you can perform other functions described in there through the remote (like setting the equalizer etc...) if not, perhaps your remote is broken or it simply is very limited in use with the NH600D

*edit...just saw that someone could do all this with the RM-MC40ELK and a NH600 so perhaps it is some strange 'D'-behaviour

That ought to be just as good. I don't know about rules and regulations in USA, here the seller would have to pay for postage both ways when there's a warranty replacement. Just make sure, together with them, that there's really a problem with the 40ELK and not with the 600D unit, cabling, user error - whatever. If they agree to you sending it in and there's no problem with it, they will charge you.
