varanus87
I am well past warranty. My headphone jack will not work for my MZ-NH600D. By this I mean the audio only plays in one ear phone, on every pair that I own. This has happened with a previous minidisc player that I have owned. Is there any way to fix this? I thought about coating the end of the headphone plug with something conductive, but I am not sure. What I am sure of is that nothing is broken, just loose. When I put pressure on a cretain spot with the jack, I can hear audio on both ears.Any help or quick fix to this problem would be greatly appreciated. greenmachine
How about opening the player and see if you can fix/replace the jack?
varanus87
How can I go about this without destroying my player?
tekdroid
Is there any way to fix this? I thought about coating the end of the headphone plug with something conductive, but I am not sure. What I am sure of is that nothing is broken, just loose. When I put pressure on a cretain spot with the jack, I can hear audio on both ears.Coating the end of the headphone plug shouldn't be necessary since it should be conductive to start with. For starters, clean (by that I mean rub/ wipe) the headphone plug with a clean cloth or item of clothing or whatever before you stick it in. Test. Take out. Clean again. Test. Take out, clean again. Test. If that doesn't work...It could be that the little metal contacts in the jack are just dirty and need a clean. If you look inside the jack with the right light you should be able to see the metal contacts. Maybe (I'm guessing) a careful application of isopropyl alcohol on the contacts inside the jack might fix it? I've never tried it but it may work if all it needs is a good contact and is dirty.Lastly, it could be that something is physically loose/worn in the jack, then you're gonna have to look at fixing/replacing it somehow. varanus87
Well, it's kind of funny that you mentioned it may just be dirty, because I had quite a spill snowboarding the other day (dislocated my right arm) and my mididisc player flew away and landed in the snow, and had snow in the jack. I waited for it to melt and sucked it out, and it played just fine after that (five more hours that day and about 6 hours today) as I was coming home from work today I just noticed the problems. What should I use to go in there and clean it out? would a pipe cleaner work, or could the wire inside it be harmful to the player? Thanks for the help so far and thanks in advance. Sevkatia
Pipe cleaner? Oh my... Please, don't.Headphone jacks have a tendency to oxidize with time; it's a common thing, like old "scratchy" pots on an old stereo. First, clean a headphone jack "pole" with alcohol. Then put some lithium grease on it and insert it into your MD headphone jack. Then - ROTATE IT- few times, until sound becomes normal, then few more turns. After that it should work fine for a long time since a thin film of grease will prevent contact with oxygen - the core of this problem. varanus87
It didnt seem to help very much. I may have found a temporary alternative. There is one pair of headphones that I overlooked, and they must have a headphone jack pole that is a slightly greater diameter than that of my other ones. It might be due to the fact that they are pretty old headphones. However, I would like to solve this problem so I can use my other headphones. My friend had a similar problem with an older minidisc player that I gave him before, and he glued the headphones in the one spot where they had audio in both ear pieces. As of now, we are both pretty stumped with my problem. I suggested coating with a conductive substance before not because the headphone jack poles aren't conductive themselves, just to add to the diameter to take out what is most likely a small gap that is causing these problems. So I really don't know what to do at this point. greenmachine
That glue method sounds funny, but if you want to do it properly, there's propably no way around opening the unit and fix it from there..edit: if you don't feel confident enough, try to find someone who does. varanus87
Before I open it, are there any pictures of the inner-workings of my specific minidisc player? And a nice, clear set of instructions would also do just fine.
raintheory
You can download the service manual in the "downloads" section here in the forums. It shows step by step how to disassemble the unit and such. I'm assuming you will only need to take the back cover off, and not have to mess with the front door assembly. varanus87
I sure hopes this works. My one pair of headphones that works is starting to give me some problems already!
