Buying HiMD in Hong Kong

I'm going to be visiting Hong Kong pretty soon, and I'm thinking of perhaps getting a Hi-MD player, the MZ-EH50 or MZ-EH930 (the EH70 looks too toy-like for my liking), and I was wondering if anyone knows of any shops still selling minidisc in Hong Kong.

Last time I went back, 2 years ago, there were still some stores selling MD units (and got myself my SJ-MJ95), but now I hear that its all just MP3 players.

For HiMD, the only models that I'm aware of are RH-10 and RH-910 which are still on sale at UNY at Tai Koo Shing (Tai Koo MTR Station), and I'm pretty sure these are the last two models ever sold in HK. I've been looking for some MD units for the past few months and couldn't find any other than the two models above.

As much as I hate to see, MD market will soon totally disappear in HK and past major companies like Sony/Onkyo/JVC has recently taken away the MD components from mini-HiFi Systems and somehow replace them by cassettes.

Why on earth would they replace the MD's by CASSETTES of all things. That really is "Dinosaur" technology now. Whilst I don't like.mp3 im general and find having to use a computer to organise music etc a real turn off (So an Ipod is not for me) I could at least make sense of new units incorporating say a CF card or memory stick for storing music on --but a CASSETTE in 2006.

You don't even see people with Tape walkmans any more. HK is usually in advance of Europe in elecytonics so I'm really surprised here.

O.T --but why on earth aren't there any CAR radios with HI-MD --they are still being turned out with CD players by droves --who needs to carry around bulky CD's anyway or have to mess around stacking these in a stupid unit in your car boot so if you want to play something else you have to stop and re-load the stacker -- what a stupid solution when a 1GB minidisc could play 7 CD's at almost CD quality.

Cheers

O.T. Reply: Seems like you're not aware of most today's player's mp3 capability. 0.7/0.8 and 1GB ain't a big difference in my opinion. Mp3 can be encoded in vbr, which makes it more efficient. No need for a stack of CDs in the car.

Hmm, just as I had feared. Looks like I won't be getting any new units on my trip over there then :(

I think everyone waiting/requesting a new Hi-MD player is a little premature. We need to remember that the MZ-RH10 is still a new model. It's not even a year old. If the unit has been out numerous years, then I'd start worrying that the medium is dying, but that's not the case.

There was a photo store (Eden? it had a white and green sign perhaps) on Hankow Rd. in Kowloon which had a silver RH910 for a very, very good price - roughly what you'd get it for in Canada at Minidisc-Canada. I'd have got it, but I was worried about getting slammed for duty fees or something. All I can tell you is that said photo shop is on the east side of the road. Good luck!

Hankow Road is in Tsim Sha Tsui area, which has a lot of camera/AV shops and their main target customers are tourists. I never shop at those shops as I always thought their price are higher. Anyway, if you can find bargain prices then by all means do it. However, be VERY careful in buying items from those shops. Make sure you hold an item in your hand BEFORE you pay any money (including 'deposits') then you're OK.

I second metal's comments. I tried bargaining this guy down, but he seemed to know that his was the best price in Hong Kong (which, as far as I could tell, it was). All I can remember is that the photo shop in question on Hankow Rd. was selling a silver Rh910 for roughly $250CAD, which is about the same as you'd get it here. It was definitely the best price I saw for it in Hong Kong (I saw RH-10s for pretty expensive prices at some of the more prominent electronics chain stores).
