Sony NW-E407 General Questions

Question

I just got this player yesterday (Ocean Blue) and it's really nice. I apologize if the following questions have already been answered on this board.

1. I already made a thread regarding about where to purchase a case, but what I really want is something that will protect the screen from scratches. Does a screen protector that's designed for the player (has the cutout holes for the two buttons near the play button) even exist?

2. The box says USB2.0 and I have read that the device is really USB1.1 only. Can this be fixed through firmware? I installed v2.0 firmware on my player already and it's still transferring at only USB1.1 speeds. Or is this USB2.0 just a typo on Sony's part?

3. For those who own this device, do you find it hard to press the two buttons, Search/Menu, Display or Disp/FM for the 50x users? I find that I have to use some force when pressing either button. I noticed that they were too "in" to the glass/plastic covering. I have to use my fingernails to press the buttons. Not that this is a huge problem or anything, but I just want to know if you guys have this problem as well or is it just my player.

4. Can you drag ATRAC files onto the MP3 File Manager program?

5. Is it possible to not charge the device when in USB mode? I, from time to time, hook the device to my PC to add/delete a song, but I don't want to have it constantly charging from such a small usage time. I heard that Li-ION batteries need to be treated in a certain manner due to their technology.

Anyway, that's all for now. Thanks in advance for the help.

I don`t know much about that but Sony writes "High Speed USB tranfer"

When I got this device i use to haev this problem but now I`m use to it.I think this problem can be solved if Sony makes button which projects on outside. Then it would be easy to press.

4. Can you drag ATRAC files onto the MP3 File Manager program?
No only Mp3 files can be drag & drop via MP3 File Manager ver2.0 .For Atrac you will need to use Sonic Stage

5. Is it possible to not charge the device when in USB mode?

No

I found #5 to be a bit annoying too, here is a site with tips on how to maximize the life of lithium-ion batteries:

http://www.batterygeek.net/lithium-ionbatterypacks2.htm

Regarding transfer, I am not 100% sure if it is USB2.0 or 1.1, but one of the big reasons the transfer might be slow is that the software encodes the file with a certain copyright protection when you transfer it.

Also, post some pics if you have the chance, and give us some of your impressions concerning the player in general.

Actually, it is. Stop the music and look through the "Advanced" settings, there is an option there somewhere.

Nevertheless, I dont think its something you should worry about.

I think the older flash players are all USB 1.1, and are also USB 2.0 compatible and not really usb 2.0. Even if there is copyright protection being layered onto the mp3 files, that shouldn't slow it down.

The newer hdd units all have usb 2.0 and the transfer rate is very fast and the files are omg in nature on the player, ie mp3s with copyright proetection.

as for lithium ion batteries, don't worry about them, just use the player anyway you want, the battery will be fine.

Is there something special about the Li-ION batteries used with the E40x/E50x series? Do you know what the lifespan of the battery is? So I can get an estimate of when I need to replace it, which I hope never based on normal day-to-day usage.

Li-ion battries whether used with Sony E40x/E50x series or Used with Nokia Mobile phone all have same advantage & disadvantages like they are less susceptible to memory effect(I read this somewhere in some Pc Magazine ).So I f you charge them whether they are fully empted or not .They will not lose their capacity..Also to tell you whether you use Li-Ion battery or not, Li-Ion battery starts to degrade after 2years . That`s why buying an extra Li-Ion battery is never a best bet.

Hello im noob here im just wondering does anybody have the NW-E407 Owners manual. Tried looking for it and I can't find it... Might Hvae throne it out D"OH?!?! Plzzzz email it to me

Thankz

You should be able to find it on Sony's website under customer support I think. You should find the manuals for all products there. When you say you have lost the manual, do you mean the cd rom that came with it when you bought it? :)

Have a look in the downloads section of this forum under operating manuals they are on the second page as:

"Full user manual for the NW-E403/E405/E407." :)

There are also service manuals for disassembling the unit and part number references but they have no instructions for operating the E407.
