Portable Player Becomes "Mini Deck"

Since I am taking my RH910 to work less these days (except to upload new tunes to play on the computer at work, thank you Sony for SS 3.4, which I then play with Winamp) I decided to connect the RH910 to my stereo amplifier/eq with Polk Audios in the family room. I mixed about 18 CDs onto 1 Hi-MD for my wife: ranges from Norah Jones to Buena Vista Social Club, smooth and classic jazz vocals, etc. I am amazed at how good this thing sounds at Hi-SP through this setup. I am using a 12 band analog EQ between the Hi-MD and the amplifier.

Some random thoughts:

1. The Shuffle playback is very fast between tunes, almost no gap or silence between tunes. Even my wife made a comment about how smooth the transitions are between tunes.

2. The sound is almost perfect. I previously had only listened to Hi-SP with cheap headphones or on my Atrac CD boombox or connected to my car stereo AUX line input. The Polk Audios are loving the input from the Hi-MD.

3. I have the unit connected to the AC power adapter and the Quick mode is "On". Does anyone see any problems with keeping this unit connected and powered for long periods? I have removed the battery to prevent any problems with the battery memory, etc. The Quick mode is very, very responsive compared to the "Off" response time.

4. This unit will probably get a lot of play time like this because it sounds fantastic and the mix capabilities has my wife very happy. She likes to shuffle all of her music. Me, I prefer to listen the way the artist intended.

I guess this will have to suffice until I can afford a Hi-MD deck. But, then again, why would I need a deck if this set-up is working out so well?

Just some Sunday morning ramblings and glowings about my new RH910 setup. :D

Of course I can Understand your easy setup and I'm shure it can satisfy.

But for me it can't replace a real Deck.

I realy enjoy the usability of my S39 Deck although it plays no Hi-MD ;)

and the Sound of course. It's much better than my RH10.

I am using a 12 band analog EQ between the Hi-MD and the amplifier.

How do you set it with the Rh910? Or is it related to the Music you're playing.

and incidental, do you have experience with an sound difference between Rh10 and Rh910

I heard they are diffrent, but never had a Rh910.

I just turn off the sound EQ on the RH910 and make adjustments with the 12 band analog EQ if needed.

I have not noticed any sound difference between the RH910 and my RH10. I might try something this week since I am at home this week recovering from some minor surgery.

I admit a full function deck would be nice, especially a remote control but I can't see how it could sound much better. I have had 2 different MDLP decks and I know how those sounded through the same system. Really am pleased with the RH910's output from the miniplug. YMMV of course...

There shouldn't be any difference since the internals (DAC, amp, etc) of both units are presumably the same.

What I miss in 2nd gen units is the line-out option. :(

Yes I thought so too. but I read about a difference in the German minidiscforum and wondering about it.

He wrote about more detailed sound with the Rh10 compared to the Rh910. And more neutrality in the lower Frequencies with the Rh910. Wich is could be a good behaviour when you use it often on your Stereo System.

For my opinion the Rh10 sounds Great, but compared to many MD Decks he provides a slightly bassy and less detailed Sound.

For Portable use I'm realy in love with it ;) but connected to my Stereo I miss a Digital out, this feature would nearly been able to get over the gap of Hi-MD Decks.

this is exacty what i do in by bedroom set-up; i use my Hi-MD900 into the AUx-in of a CD/DVD stereo unit.. sounds really really great..

i am a former pro-musician & just retires DJ and concider myself an expert in how music sounds; and this sound great..

i don't NEED and fire tuned digital tweeks or freaks; seeks just good sounding music..

i keep one of my 5 Hi-MD disks there; and rotate it every so ofter; but try to keep the mellower stuff there like My like with thrill kill cult; lol'ss

when company comes over; i like to put my other Hi-MD900 on the living room (Bigger) set-up ; and flaunt it's internal twangs..

like i like to go into the menue and "Speed-up" all the songs just a hair to give them more life; and the ppl are amamzed..

i make sure that they underdstand this is NOT an MP3 player..

and of course; i LOVE my sweakin "line-out" on the HI-MD; sometimes i take it on a DJ job for special songs i prepare for certain parties..

my advide to yous is; keep the unit closer the the couch so as to be able to change the songs at will; it doesn't have to be at the stereo.

i myself (rayzray) use the remote which i keep under the pillow with all my other nightly needs.

rant end
