Richard
Just wondering if any of the UK members know where I can pick up a pair of MDR-SA3000 / 5000 phones in London - I am over in the capital next week if anyone has any ideas of where I may be able to find a pair of either of these? Tottenham Court Rd perhaps?
streaml1ne
I have no info on the locations, but I'd easily recommend spending the extra for the SA5000.

Ishiyoshi
So, Richard ... any luck with the SA series? If so, which did you acquire - the SA3000 or SA5000?
Richard
So, Richard ... any luck with the SA series? If so, which did you acquire - the SA3000 or SA5000? No in the end I couldn't find anything in London, so am now thinking of importing via etronics.com. Based on your comments in the other thread I think I will go the extra distance for the SA5000. Bass response you said seemed slightly better and above all the build quality seems to be in another league. Only problem is now you got me thinking I will have to invest in a headphone amp as well

Only problem is now you got me thinking I will have to invest in a headphone amp as well Indeed. If you love bass, the SA5000 offers very full and controlled bass - the SA3000 appears weak in this dept. As for headphone amp, it all depends what your primary source is (my primary source is the DVP-S9000ES). For me, the headphone amp is a must if you pair it with the MD often. Perhaps, you ought to try the SA5000 alone with the EH1 and decide accordingly. I think streaml1ne is in the process to acquire a headphone amp for his SA5000 as well. streaml1ne
I've found the NH1 has no problem driving the SA5000's. Adding a cmoy into the mix gave an increase in volume, but I didn't notice a difference in sound between the cmoy+NH1 and the stock NH1 when volume matched. I'm eager to see how the Gilmore Lite will fair, it should be able to drive the SA5k's far better than the cmoy. By all indications this should make the bass response of the SA5000 even better than it is already. I would say run the SA's with the HD-Amped players in your arsenal for now and if you feel the need for an amplifier later, skip the cmoy and try some of the more advanced designs. Richard
Thanks to both of you guys for your good advice. Indeed I think it makes sense to take things a step at a time and initially maybe try running the SA5000 from the EH1 / NH1 without an amp. Also all things being well in a week or two I should have a new bookshelf system which will probably be my primary source for these phones for home listening. Once that is sorted I will put in an order for the SA5000 and take it from there.
