It depends what you want the PSP for... If you want it because it'll function as a multi-purpose gadget I suppose why not. But if you're looking for a handheld gaming console I would say go with the Nintendo DS, better games. The only games really worth buying for the PSP are Liberty City Stories and Burnout.

Cheers guys, Well I do travel for 5 hours a day so something to watch could be good, I'm just not sure if the initial investment of £300 is worth it just yet.

I have seen some good games, Liberty City, Lumines, Wipeout and Twisted Metal bu my problem was once I'm through those - where do I go? Is there a huge pile of good games just waiting for a release window?

Another plus I suppose is that on my floor alone at work we have about ten so no shortage of MP gaming :)

im not a 'real user' but i would get it anyway, even if to just use it for video playback, there will be more games out there.

If you get the JP version from audiocubes, its region free on the games, so you can get more games from the states etc.

ALL PSP's are region free when it comes to games. The only region encoding is for the UMD movies.

Region codes apply to UMD movies AND music. If you are interested in importing some Japanese movie/music UMDs, then definitely get the Japanese version. If you are only going to use it for games/self-encoded movies, then a cheaper local version is fine. In the US, the game selections for the PSP is pathetic. Japan has much much more games (even some magazines are bundling demos on UMDs). Japan has so many PSP games that they have "greatest hits" lineup already.

1 recommended accessory: the 2200mAh battery pack.

I just don't understand why anyone would buy UMD movies, surely you could just buy the DVD, for the same price, and rip it to Mem Stick!!

Maybe this is a better question to ask, what's the PSP killer app?

Yeah, most movie DVDs are available under $10, while most UMDs are still $20 and up. The drawbacks of self-ripped movies is the limited resolution that Sony put on (320x240), while UMD movies are useing PSP's native resolution, and it's more expensive to buy multiple 1GB+ memory sticks than several UMDs.

Maybe the new video download service would be the "killer app" for the PSP, unless Sony screwed up again (DRM, limitations, propietary stuff, etc). IMO, Sony USA should just concentrate on releasing games (there are still plenty of Japanese games not out in the US), instead of trying to copy Apple.

Edit: wrong res mentioned

I think they've already duffed it up by limiting the rez on on video playback. i mean come on. Add that to the fact it only plays one codec! :( I suppose you cant expect much more as its more suited to gamers.

Oh, well just get it! There tons of fun and fantastic games coming up soon, such FF, GTA2, and even Field Commander which is maybe like a PSP version of C & C game. I have friends who wouldn't buy because they just look at the games and saw it as too few, but I really think it's well worth the money. Plus hacks and updates to make it play self-encoded full resolution mp4 video(maybe not so fast...), as new MSs are coming out.

Well it's tough choice! It's either this or a nice acoustic Guitar for my borthday this Feb so I need to make the right choice.

I'm really not that keen on video playback - can't see the point when I have a big telly a home, I just want some sweet games to play and maybe to surf the web from bed. The only good games I can see are GTA, Wipeout, Lumines and Twisted Metal, and I reckon Twisted metal is scaping the barrel a little bit.

Where are the sweet strategy games like advance wars? Cool managemnent things like Harvest moon? I don't want a DS they just look bloody silly, but I don't want to waste £300 on a PSP and a few games.

Bah I can never make a decision :'(

Field commander is a RTS game I suppose, you check it out at gamespot already. Btw, I also recommand Kingdom of Paradise is you like RPG, Pursuit Force, brand new and would definitely make you feel PSP is worthy, and X-Men II.

May I add (I have played them on my brother's PSP) Everybody's Golf / Hot Shots Golf, Virtua Tennis, World Championship Snooker and TOCA Race Driver, Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Ridge Racers. OK, all sport / racing but good games and not scraping the barrel =)

edit: added Need for Speed: Most Wanted

I got PSP for about a year, and i think it is worth its money

There are good games. For me, l like burnout, pro evolution soccer, armored core, etc

And there are good games coming up, like Untold legend 2, or Monster Hunter..

I think it really depends on ur taste of gaming...PSP got more sports and racing games than NDS..

Also i like its multimedia functions...watching movies on PSP is fun, although i never bought any UMD movies yet...

If i could play pirated games on it & I would have bought it (Sorry for disscussing this ) .It`s games are so costly here about ($30-$40 per game ),That its out of my reach

But This doesn`t simply means that I also bring pirated games for my Pc as well .

As long as you have older firmware (1.5 and older), you can run emulators on your PSP, and your game selections are expanded considerably.

Outside Japan, the games selection for the PSP is pretty mediocore (although more games are coming out, still pale compared to Japan, where there's already a greatest hits lineup for the PSP). Good thing is there is no region lock on games so far.

Are there other languages available in the games sold in Japan, I mean a Japan only game has got only Japanese or Does it have other languages as well.

Most of them will be in Japanese only. Action, racing and platforming games should be easy/straight forward without having advance knowledge of Japanese, except for the menus. The only problem is RPG games.

Thanks for Info (Now i will be tempted to buy psp in near future )I have searched on goole & I found that there are no emulators that work with Ver2.0.

Is their any chance of new version of PSP in near future?

You can downgrade from 2.0. However this gets rid of some of the features such as the web browser. Depends on how important the 2.0 features are to you I suppose.

what specs are you computer?? I tried burning with Recode with the file being on the main hard disk instead of my iLink external hard disk, but the sound and video still arent flawlessly in sync, its still bugging the heck outta me. If I could get it to work, i;d get a psp but ga daaamit..

Use PSP Video 9 for encoding DVD to MP4/AVC and DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD accordingly. I have used Nero Recode before and it's not as efficient in my opinion. As for my system specs, it's nothing fancy; just P4 3Ghz with 2GB of memory.

For full length movies, I have converted star Wars 3, Fantastic 4, and War of the worlds. All with Nero Recode PSP/memory stick preset, 2pass encoding, best quality. Usually, off sync audio and video is caused by PAL to NTSC conversion, or vice versa, although it shouldn't matter with Nero Recode. Are you using the PSP reset? Did you use Nero showtime to play the video back?

haha well thats a lot more than ive got. Im using a lap top with P4M 2.8 ghz , 384mb ram and 128 video graphics ram. Have you got all the settings for dvd decrytper set to default?? When I rip ti dvd decrypter i get more than one file, what do i do to change that?

Pata, if by psp preset you mean, the one that says Sony HMP preset then yes, i used that.

dvd's Ive tried to convert are any given sunday, mr and mrs smith and a few others.

Could my norton internet security be slowing things down? Ive tried disabling both antivirus and internet settings and that doesnt help.:/

Yes, you do need to tweak the settings of DVD Decrypter. Please refer to this guide: http://www.mobiledeviant.com/forum/showthread.php?t=901

damn i AM lazy, I found this: http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/dvdtopsp.html

thanks everyone :D I think Ive got it, what setting did you use on psp vid 9?? I converted at the highest setting and ended up not having it play back properly on my comp, in fact the only thing that could play it was VLAN. I did 2 pass encoding, but when I skipped forward on VLAN the colour went duff for a few secs, although I wondering if its just a prb with VLAN?

So my guess is the problems are with the codecs that are installed in your computer. Try playing the videos with Nero Showtime.
