Tonight on TV in the UK (Channel 4 7 PM News) some journalists were seen interviewing the Irish Guarda (Police) about the murder of an ex "Spy" who had admitted working for the UK government.

NO I am NOT making a political statement.

The whole purpose of this post is to say that of the 4 or 5 reporters clearly shown on the screen they were ALL using minidisc recorders for capturing the r interviews / press comments made by the Guarda.

I definitely saw 3 RH10 type devices (probably the MH10 - the Pro model) and something that looked like a classical Tascam.

This proves so far that Minidisc is FAR from dead.

Also there wasn't a single large microphone to be seen either. Obviously these guys were using the very small mikes that make recording out in the field really easy.

(I repeat I'm NOT making a Political statement here , just pointing out that this News Item showed a few journalists on a breaking News assignment quite happily using Minidisc products in what is their real environment.

Just to show that it's not only people ripping CD's who use Minidiscs.

Cheers

-K

it seems then that are used by field reporters or stringers rather than those with easier access to higher tech &/or bulkier gear. makes perfect logical sense, nice spot kyle, keep 'em comming

A friend of mine used to do interviews for the radio, and of course she was given a microphone and a MD-player to do it. Also, very often I see them being used at concerts, this really big control panel (dont know whats the proper term) for mixing the live music, and on top always some tiny MD-Player.

In a recent episode of the Archers (BBC radio soap opera) Fallon Rogers daughter of Jolene who runs the pub with Sid was heard to say something along the lines of, 'hang on I'll just get my mini disc' for an interview she's doing on a local history project.

Okay it's not on TV and it's not actually real but it's MD in the media!

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation uses Minidiscs quite a lot in gathering field interviews/reports. There is also a show where the listeners can submit stories and they recommend Minidisc along with other formats:

I also see Minidisc recorders occassionally held up by reporters during scrum sessions when the MPs leave the House of Commons. I often wonder how they avoid the motor noise with those mics connected directly to the unit like that (no extension cable).

And just recently at a concert the guy on the soundboard had an MZ-R500 (or something along that line) hooked up to the mixer to record the show.
