"Sony playing a Cheap Trick on musicians?

Two rock bands, the Allman Brothers Band and Cheap Trick, have filed a lawsuit against Sony BMG alleging that they are shortchanged when Sony divvies up royalties from digital downloads ....................

.........Right now the bands receive only 4.5 cents on every 99 cent sale of one of their songs, the suit claims."

Not just SONY but all record companies evidently are paid around 70 cents by the likes of iTunes for downloaded songs and by treating this sale in a similar way to a physical CD and assuming breakages, returns, etc manage to avoid paying the artist most of the royalties.

Also makes you wonder what sort of margins SONY has with their ConnectStore downloads. :(

Not just SONY but all the major record labels.

Artists with SONY would probably be more likely to take them to court due to SONY's recent bad publicity with Rootkits hoping for atleast a decent out of court settlement.

this is exactly why I didn't feel sorry for copying big-label cd's as a student... it is NOT stealing from the artist, as the company already did that part... it is stealing from a thief

I did pay for my concert tickets, so I actually did pay te artist

with local bands and indies etc I always bought the real stuff

PS: nowadays I'm working and I simply buy the cd's I want :P

This is an old well known problem of the music industry. Problem is the public doesn't care. All they want is the lates hyped hip-hop or pop star. Yeah, you heard people complaining about this online and message boards, but go to Best Buy/Target, and you'll see people still buying the crap hip-hop/pop churned by the music industry.

Also, the internet and P2P are opened for anyone, any artists. Yet they're still flocking the same old labels.
