Questions regarding Sony buds...

Two main questions here:

1, do the various buds(EX51, 71, 81 ect) utilise the same tips, or did Sony waste money by having each one require it's own tip?

2, where can I get replacement tips for my EX51(still have all the ones it came with and I don't anticipate any problems, but noone ever does)?

And one last, minor, question, are there tips from other manufacturers that might fit on these buds? Mostly just curious as to how many options(if any) are avliable.

I do not own any of the headphones you mentioned, but i have a set of in the ear JVC and i lost one of the tips, so just messing around the web i found this.

http://www.headwize.com/projects/cmoy4_prj.htm

this is a MOD for the "KOSS the plug" headphones, but the method for making the new foam plugs can be adapted to any in the ear headphones, just make sure the hole is just big enough to get the sound needle through, using this method i have made replacement tips for my JVCs. I hope this helps some

Yes, the EX51/EX71/EX81 all use the same tips. Many other brands of earphones use similar tips that can work with the Sonys. You may want to contact Sony via their site, or buy tips from a web retailer such as Audiocubes in order to buy some replacements.

Does anyone know whether the new EX90s also use the same tips?

The reason I'm asking is that I'd always had trouble getting the EX71s to stay in my ears until I discovered that the tips for Etymotic ER6s fit them perfectly. They stay in my ears much better and i think they give me better sound isolation.

The EX series, JVC In-Ear Buds, Senn CXs, Sharp MD33s, Panasonic HJE series, UE SuperFi3's and SuperFi5's all use the same universal buds. Of all of these, the ones provided by SuperFi's are best in terms of quality, IMO. Also, the SuperFi makes double flanges which provides additional isolation, and foamie tips, which are tops in comfort and may provide extra isolation to boot.

You can purchase them either directly from here.
