i got up off my arse & enrolled in a cisco CCNA-TURBO cert today, starts in two weeks, compresses 40ish weeks of study into 18 weeks.

has anyone else got a cisco cert yet? or an mcse? or better yet both?

i'd just like a few observations, criticisms. any unqualified bystanders please feel stick in an oar too.

After high school, I almost took that route...getting certifications and whatnot. Instead I enrolled in college and earned an Associate degree in Computer Engineering Technology (one more year left for a Bachelor's degree). My brother did the opposite...he has an A+ certification and is working on his MCSE. We both have similar tech support jobs and make roughly the same amount of money. Certifications usually cost less than going to school, but either way you'll be better placed to apply for computer-related jobs. Consider that this is my US point of view. I'm not sure about the tech-job scene in Australia. Are you looking to make more money at your current job, or find another job after you earn the certificate?

The work I do is almost 100% related to Microsoft technologies (I'm an MCSE and MCDBA) and generally more on the software deployment and development side, but I know a couple of people who are Cisco qualified. They both rate the Cisco cert program quite highly and have had good things to say about the course content and supporting materials. I've heard people say that the Cisco exams are actually more related to real-world scenarios vs. the MS ones - I don't know if this is still the case as MS have overhauled a lot of their exams to try and address these kinds of criticisms...

actually at the momment i'm unemployed. i've managed bars, done tech support before, worked in a chocolate wharehouse, nightclubs, financial reporting... all kinds of crap. i've not finished my BBa degree [business adminisration/logistics] for some health reasons that aren't going away in the near future, so i've decided to do some quals i'm interested in for vocational purposes.
