RH1 won´t display "CHARGE --MIN LEFT" - why?

Whenever I connect the RH1 via USB to my PC, it does for a short while show the battery symbol(animated, as if charging) then switches to "HI-MD" and those blinking dots on the right.

However, the manual says that when it is loading, it should display the time left until it´s fully charged.

But I´ve never seen this message. The battery seems to be recharging(the icon was shown to be near empty at first, but after a while, when disconnecting, it was shown near full), but I can´t tell if it really is or not.

Also, the dots on the right are constantly blinking - shouldn´t they remain fixed?

BTW, the manual isn´t entirely clear on this - should the message be seen on the unit, or on the remote? I´d guess the unit, but it doesn´t display tracks either, so...

Mine does this as well. I assume the battery countdown is just replaced by the blinking indicator that it is 'PC-connected'. It does seem to get a full charge this way however. I was surprised that it seems to bot be able to be powered off while connected this way.

Does your RH1 charge ok when connected to the AC power adaptor rather than your PC ?

Sorry for the long wait, but I wasn´t able to test it till now.

Yes, when plugged into the AC adaptor, it does indeed show the message.

I immediately tried it with the USB connector - no message, only the battery animation.

rcoleman1 seems to be correct - it only shows the message when plugged into the AC adaptor, but charges in both cases.

Till now I didn´t notice, because I always connect it via USB...

Thanks for the replies.

In the manual of my RH-910 they explained, that the wall adaptor is capable of delivering more power than the USB port and that the player would never get fully charged via USB;

The RH1, when connected to the adaptor charges at full power for one hour (reaching 80%) and the rest takes another 2-3 hours at lower current, in order to get this type of battery properly charged.

Well, the 910 has a different kind of battery, but the USB port will still deliver less power, so I figure, the "Charging ...min left" display will only show, if the unit receives 'full power' from the AC adaptor.

just my guess

regarding the battery. What do you do?, Do you wait until the battery is exhausted or recharge it before?. What do you think is better for the battery life?

cheers

with LiION it is better not to let the battery discharge too deep (unlike with NiMH which is better fully discharged before recharging)

so I just recharge it whenever I have the chance... this is better on the battery and is also very convenient as I have almost always got a fully charged battery

for more info on battery behaviour and service, read the www.batteryuniversity.com as it offers lots of good advice

Maybe the "Charging ...min left" display is only calibrated for full power charging via the adaptor and doesn't display as the USB port charging is variable due to various power demands on a PC. eg a laptop running off it's battery.
