Hi there,

Just wanted to know if there are any MD units available nowadays that will allow upload of old standard MD tracks to a PC for transfer to other formats or for recomplilation. It's frustrating to have all my old MD recordings "stuck" in the old format.

Thanks in advance.

The MZ-RH1 can also upload optical digital and line in recordings, but will not upload NetMD downloads made via the Sonicstage software.

That's excellent! Finally, I see a reason to stay with the format and update to a new unit. A unit with the MZ-RH1's capabilities been a long time coming - what a shame it wasn't available 5 years ago!

Just a few detail questions:

1) Can you upload tracks by "drag and drop" or is it a laborious task in real time?

2) Once uploaded, I assume it is possible to convert tracks to other formats (eg. wav, mp3) and burn them to a CD?

3) Can tracks be downloaded back to minidisc? Can this be done by "drag and drop"? What about downloading back to a legacy minidisc (for playback on my old component unit)?

1) neither... it is digital, through USB but requires SonicStage (no drag-n-drop) and it should be faster than realtime, but it does take longer than uploading HiMD-recordings

2) definitely as it is impossible to keep SP recordings as SP on the computer (you have to choose between HiSP or wav and SS will convert while uploading) if you save as wav, you can convert to whatever you want with the least loss of quality

3) see both points above, yes, but not through drag-n-drop (SS is required). And you can download them to a legacy disc but max quality is LP2 (it can do fake SP for playback on pre-NetMD equipment, but it is actually LP2 'blown-up' to SP-size without an increase in SQ)
